artguy360 got a reaction from enderdrag64 in Star Wars Visions
Some of the visions music was quite good. I'm glad more composers are working in the Star Wars galaxy.
Edit: this music from the short The 9th Jedi is probably my favorite music from Visions. So beautiful, flowing, and perfectly SW.

artguy360 got a reaction from Sergeant in Is John Williams in a way a role model for you and your own life?
JW is an example to me of dedication to one's work. He doesn't speak to the notion of passion much, but his love of music is clear. He is an inspiration to me. I also appreciate how in control he is of his own time. He is polite but not particularly generous with his time. This has been touched upon in several interviews with people who know/work with him. JW is always polite, but very conscious of his own time. He is very disciplined and that quality resonates with me.

artguy360 got a reaction from Tallguy in Star Trek is better than everything
I think Dennis McCarthy's Star Trek Generations score doesn't get enough love. The new theme he wrote has a wonderful, adventurous, almost seafaring sound to it. He wrote beautiful renditions of it through out the score that range from adventurous to heroic and noble to sad. And the few times he quotes the Trek theme, he weaves it seamlessly with his new theme.
I also enjoy the more intimate music for Picard and the immense sadness and yearning for family that he experiences in the film.

artguy360 got a reaction from Fabulin in I can't believe it's not John Williams! (the best imitators)
Wow! I've never heard of this composer before. There is so much of JW's sound in Moody's compositions shown here. It's actually exciting to hear someone writing in the same stylistic ballpark as JW as a modern composer.
Wow again, I just listened to his re-score for this chase scene and you will literally think you are listening to JW action music with a slightly different voice. But the rhythmic tendencies and orchestration is totally JW.

artguy360 got a reaction from Trope in Williams composing fanfare for the Hollywood Bowl centennial - "Centennial Overture"
Listening to it again this morning, it really does have some JW action music tendencies, especially after the opening fanfare. The fun melody almost recalls the desert chase from TROS.

Definitely! I hear some echoes of ‘The Adventures of Han’. There’s what sounds like a jazzier version of its rapid-fire trumpet passage, and the ending timpani solo is also quite similar.

Thanks for sharing the video. As far as the music goes... it's got a lot going on. It's tone is kind of odd. It's got a fun tone to it, sometimes almost comical. The bouncy percussion and bells and thing remind me of JW's music for the news or maybe some of his Olympics stuff. It almost sounds like a less grand, slightly more formal Galaxy's Edge. Maybe this piece is an example of JW writing a concert piece like he does film action scene music. It kind of has JW action music qualities.

artguy360 got a reaction from Brando in Natalie Holt's OBI-WAN KENOBI (2022)
As a film music fan, I don't mind that a Star Wars show is comfortable establishing its own musical identity without JW themes. That might not be my preference but I don't mind the decision. So far, I just haven't liked the music much at all. And without an official release, I can't fully judge or appreciate the music on its own. I'm still curious about this score. It's not a complete snoozefest yet.

This is a great JW interview. He's so expansive here, which is rare for JW.
Edit: I've never even heard JW talk this much about Andre Previn.

artguy360 reacted to Score in What are your thoughts on John Williams' new theme for Obi-Wan?
I'll answer, since I also consider JW's work for the first two trilogies superior to his work for the third trilogy. It's not really suspicious if you take into account that the movies for which the scores were written are separated by decades, and in the mean time JW has both grown older and changed his style. It's no coincidence that Superman and E.T. are stylistically much closer to the original SW trilogy than the last SW trilogy is, as they were written in the same years.
It's totally possible to compare JW's works, taken as pieces of music independent of their movies, with other musical works written by other composers and for different media. In this regard, I believe JW absolutely deserves to be included in the list of the great composers (not just "movie composers") of all time, the list that includes people like Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and so on. I even consider him superior to several of the great "classical" (in the broad sense) composers. This does not mean that every single 5-minute piece of his output is a masterpiece, or that everything he wrote is at the same level.
By the way, just to play the game, here is my ranking of the SW scores:
V and IV (more or less equivalent, although different), I, VI, III (the last reel is amazing), II, VII, IX, VIII

I think Thomas Bergersen comes pretty close. His music is always an inspiration.
This track might have come straight from the latest star wars and no one would have noticed that it's not JW.
This is a MIDI mockup he did more than 10 years ago to showcase his private library.

Hello there!
Whew. There's a lot goin' on there. Maybe it's the garbage audio quality, but from here it's like "Scherzo for X-Wings" had a mutant baby with "In the Moonlight." This one's definitely a grower for me. Maybe he'll revise it.

Yeah, if imitation is an artform, Verta is a bonefide master. Here's another one, and he even has Williams' brother Don on timpani:

Randol Bass definitely gets on this list. He has some corny stuff for educational ensembles, but his Gloria written in 1990 actually predates Call of the Champions by quite a bit despite sounding really similar. Can't find a good recording of his night before christmas, but it has elements of that childlike orchestration from ET, BFG, and Home Alone etc.
