There are a lot of grievances to be had with 1 and 2, but they are a lot easier to digest and enjoy than anything after 3.

I wish I could visit an alternate timeline where Chris Columbus directed all the movies, and see how much better they'd be compared to Yates's films. One big difference would be the ability to see what's going on onscreen.

In an alternate reality, it would be fun to know how Deathly Hallows in particular would have turned out by each of the three other HP directors. Starting with whether they all would have still split it in two or if anybody would have done it as one film.

I think I get what you mean in that 3 and 4 probably both had the most dynamic filmmaking, the most impressive presentation in terms of scope, comfortable pacing, quick-witted sense of humor (Columbus and Yates always struck me as a bit slow/awkward), and tonally I think found the most satisfying balance between light and dark of the films. My problem with GOF is that it feels like Harry Potter cranked up to 11. It's like Newell directed the whole movie with a megaphone going "Do it bigger! BIGGER!!!" Not just on set but wandering around all the pre and post-production offices too The performances, dialogue, staging, visual effects, music....that whole movie has a major case of the HOLY FUCKING SHITs.

I can enjoy it divorced from the books but it feels the least like Rowling to me of all the movies. Even Columbus was more restrained, though obviously he could be pretty heavy-handed. Yates, on the other hand, I wish indulged himself more. Cuaron captured the best vibe to me, my perception of the magical world in POA is constantly shifting between eccentric, horrifying, enchanting, or just very simple and domestic, and it's a really delightful juggling act.

Something about that movie's cinematic language appeals to me, I always feel like Cuaron et al are frequently winking behind the camera in a way that I always enjoyed about Rowling's wordplay. You get it with Columbus and Newell, but they were less:

    and a little more like:

Whereas Yates could be a bit:

I should probably get this soon. I got the OST for Christmas last year, but I have never listened to more than a few tracks, outside of the film which I have seen several times. I love the score however, and it seems that at some point I'll want to listen to the complete version of every Williams score so I may as well not waste time listening to the OST -- I should just start right in on the complete.

When I saw the first cut of CoS, I was so moved that I told Chris Columbus "You need a better composer than me for this film" and Columbus answered "I know!" so we both called Bill Ross. - John Williams, 2017

He says, "whatever the other ones we've done". He just says "other" with unusual emphasis. Your illusion of Williams being a kind old man who would never use such gutter language is thus maintained!

With Hillary Clinton being elected president, America's second amendment has been obliterated and ISIS has taken full control of the country.. But with the advanced technology set forth by John Hammond, every man woman and child now has birth right to their own militarized raptor. It's time to make America great again, it's time for... Jurassic War.

Also when Harry's looking at the scrapbook at the beginning and when he meets up with Hermione in Diagon Alley. Might be a few other small references.

Agree. I also suspect that the two themes were a strategy by Williams simply to avoid repetition in the ending. The first film really has two endings, both similarly cathartic moments for Harry and musically both very big and constantly building pieces. I wonder if Williams looked at those two sequences and decided he would need two related but distinct themes so as to give each their own musical identity and not feel like the same beat was repeated twice. So throughout the film and score, you have the friendship/triumph theme essentially building to the House Cup moment while the home/family theme builds to Leaving Hogwarts.

It's one of the many successes of Williams' score IMO that musically he was able to really give both the House Cup and Leaving Hogwarts the feeling of these equally huge emotional climaxes back-to-back, and yet one seems to lead into the other without the latter feeling redundant.

I've always thought it would have been nice at the end of 4, 5, and/or 6. Especially 4 and 6, they have those warmly comedic interactions where the "playful" motif could have worked leading into the friendship/"Wondrous" theme. Boo hoo!

Good thing they switched the Incredibles 2 date to 2018 - they were nearly too late. 15 years too late.

I hope that it's not an indication that the film will have to be developed much more hastily now - I really would like to see the sequel live up to, if not surpass, the original.

I have a few sound bites from Williams regarding the film's music that may tide you all over until the DVD is released (assuming you all haven't seen this already). Williams makes some interesting comments. I enjoy seeing his eyes light up when he's talking about other people, like Spielberg, finding joy in music.
