Does anyone know where I can find some JW-composed scenes WITHOUT the music? Ex: The closing scene in ET with the music removed, or anything similar that would show a complete emptiness without his music. It's for a class that I am teaching. Yes I realize I can just mute the TV, but I still want the dialog and/or sound effects in there. Anything on YouTube? Do they even exist? Thanks in advance!

I miss the passing of one of the giants of the industry in John Barry. RIP. Sheesh it was 4 days ago and I'm just now getting the news and only because I logged on to this board and saw the other thread. It's a shame the death of a truly remarkable musician with a career that spanned 40 years gets no mention from the mainstream media and instead I have to stumble upon it by accident. I sincerely hope that when that fateful day comes for the one all of us here idolize, that it at least gets the coverage it deserves and is not rendered to the bottom of Yahoo news, or even worse, a posting on a message board.

Me too, and I'm surprised it took 16 posts for someone to mention it. In fact, I was fairly certain it was him for at least a few seconds and I was like "What a find!!"

Not sure it influenced film music, but his 2nd piano concerto is probably the most underrated Prokofiev piece out there.

For me, the biggest movies of the past 10 years that I have not seen are: Avatar The Matrix Reloaded and.... ....embarrassed to say this.... Lord of the Rings (any of them)

I spent the better part of my junior year in college with his 3rd symphony in my CD player. What an incredible work. RIP.

My gawd, that sounded like a high school student asking questions for the yearbook. I sat there cringing most of the time, but Williams the modest and respectful person he is calmed me down with every answer. I think some composers would have just hung up on her. Her naivety was kind of cute though. I wish they would have gotten a more music oriented person to interview him, but can't get spoiled here. I mean how often do we get a fresh new Wiilliams interview?

Yeah the Imperial March is definitely more like Chopin's 2nd Sonata Marche Funebre. *Edit- Wait I think you were referring to his piano arrangement being more Chopin than Beethoven, nevermind.

It is. It's possibly my favourite movie. I don't recall it, and I never felt the need to have it on CD, but I remember always liking how the movie works, including the music. I can't imagine it with a Williams score. Some of the songs are good, but the score is just bad. It's like a really bad Elfman imitation. And the mix is weak, no depth to it. It's just completely flat. It sounds like they forgot to add reverb or something. The score obviously didn't ruin the movie for me, because like I said it is easily one of the top 3 films I've seen in recent memory. But I believe a Williams score could have made this thing a true masterpiece.

Off the top of my head, the one film I wish JW had scored: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. This is one of the top three movies I've seen the last ten years. Really, It's that good. Unfortunately... the soundtrack sucks. I realize there's an artsy or "indie" feel to this film, and maybe the director wanted that feel in the soundtrack, but wow with a Williams score this would probably be my favorite movie of all-time.

Glad you enjoyed it. I've been a number of times since last posting and have now pretty much done everything (except for the Three Broomsticks restaurant which I plan to try in a few weeks). I still hope to see it expanded, and I do not mind it coming at the expense of Lost Continent. I wouldn't be shocked if this is announced in two years.

Definitely not. There were definitely more old school fans there than anyone. Lots of guys in their 40s, with their kids.

Wow I've never seen that many nerds in one place before. I'm exhausted and numb and feel like I don't want to hear any SW music for a long time, but overall it was pretty impressive. I had dinner at a Denny's across the street and sat next to a table of stormtroopers. Funny stuff.

Fantastic job. (Although as I trumpet player, I was kind of disappointed that you omitted the sixteenth-note triplet fanfare right there near the end. Always a big moment for us, when it's done right.) I chose the other version, I like it more. But I agree it's a good trumpet part.

"Chariots Of Fire" fully deserved its Oscar. Whether it deserved to beat "Raiders" is another matter. If you're not better than your competition, you don't deserve the award. It's a yearly award, and COF was clearly not the best score that year, thus did not deserve the award.

And it sold its soul to the devil when it gave Santa his second one. Oscars are a weird animal really. When your favourite composer wins, (such as when Giacchino won), you sing praises to the academy, yet when a guitar player wins for reusing some music, they're suddenly the scum of the earth. If the oscars were not a lavish and sometimes funny ceremony, I wouldn't watch them. Just makes me feel part of the whole movie *thing* for an evening. Wait I thought they rescinded his award. Wasn't there some kind of mistake like a typo on the presentation card? He really didn't win an Academy Award for improvising on a guitar on his bedroom 4-track did he?
