  1. Interesting about your friend. Absolute pitch can be a curse more than a blessing. I have a friend who sings in a choir and he has a nearly impossible time dealing with the director's decisions to transpose. For example, the octavo he is reading from is in A-flat, but the director chooses to transpose to F, thinking that no one will notice or care. My friend cannot "imagine" it in F, because his absolute pitch is so firmly embedded in him. His only solution is to close the music and just listen to his neighbors and try to memorize it. The octavo in the "wrong key" is just too distracting to him. Crazy stuff, but fascinating.
  2. Wow... I certainly did not intend this post to be offensive, but I apologize anyways. Maybe I should have titled it differently, something like "How would you like Williams to spend the next five years." Perhaps it wouldn't have felt morbid. The poll was just an innocent question to ponder. Like a lot of us here, I think about the future of film scoring without that superstar genius that Williams has been for the last few decades. I wonder if we will have someone capable of writing at that very highest level. And no, Michael Giacchino is not there. I've thought about the history of the famous composers and how so many of them taught and mentored other famous composers. Haydn taught Beethoven, Salieri taught Schubert, Faure taught Ravel, Rimsky-Korsakov taught Stravinsky, etc etc. We don't really have that today. For the most part, what we have today are marginally skilled "film scoring professors" who aren't all that brilliant themselves and they are the ones training our future film composers. The very best composers aren't teaching. I think there are a lot of "very good" composers who could learn a lot from Williams, and I thought it was an interesting idea. Again, sorry if you were offended by the wording. I'd edit it, but it won't allow me to.
  3. I think someone getting as popular as Williams is about as likely as a filmmaker getting as popular as Spielberg. I still have hope there will be some prodigy that comes out of nowhere to compose with the expertise of Williams.
  4. Maybe one day he will be as good as Williams, but I don't think it is very likely. Still, he's a good one.
  5. There's totally awesome... and then there's Williamesque.
  6. He's a poor man's John Williams. I'm talking someone that flatout knocks your socks off and makes you go HOLY !@#$ that is totally Williams!!!!
  7. True, but is it realistic to expect 5 more "classics" from him at this point?
  8. And lets presume the young upcoming composer JW grooms ends up capable of writing just like him.
  9. I understand that but there are several ongoing JG threads on the first page. Yeah heaven for bid we make one extra thread for the 5 year anniversary.
  10. Five years ago today. I can't believe it's been that long.
  11. It's my favorite film of the series, but then again I'm a sucker for anything that involves time travel.
  12. I was under the impression that JW gets a modest fee (couple hundred thousand perhaps) but then gets a percentage point of the gross, like 0.5% or something like that.
  13. Ah okay, yeah something should be said about the ability to write a good hook. There is a certain kind of talent needed to be successful at it. MJ and his writers were very good at it.
  14. As far as I know, the only hits he "composed" are Wanna Be Starting Something and Don't Stop Till You Get Enough. Those are the "2-chord" songs I was referring to. He is credited with "writing" Billy Jean, Beat It, etc but I believe he just wrote the lyrics while Quincy Jones composed the music. Rod Temperton composed Thriller, Rock With You, and Off The Wall. Jones composed a lot of the others. I actually like Don't Stop Till You Get Enough despite it only having two chords. Love the 70s disco strings.
  15. Considering Jackson composed some of his songs using just two chords, I doubt his classical stuff would have been very interesting, but we'll never know for sure.
  16. What do you mean everybody? I'd be happy with just ONE like him.
  17. I wish more composers could write like Williams. Marcus's piece is the closest thing I've heard to Williams' sound since.... well, Williams. It would be a blessing for the industry if there were more people capable of writing like that.
  18. The park has become less and less focused on movies over the years. This ride seems to have been designed as a sort of answer to Disney's Rock 'n' Roller Coaster at MGM Studios, but not done as well. If I'm not mistaken, this would be the very first ride not themed after a movie or TV show. The funny part is it's called "Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit", and yet there's nothing Hollywood about it. Can you imagine how fun it would have been soaring on that thing at night with Duel of the Fates blaring in your ears? Or Back to the Future? At least that would have kept the Hollywood theme. At the very least, they could have offered one film score among the thirty choices. Oh well, my guess is they can easily add and remove choices over time. I would imagine eventually they'll even have a way you can upload your own stuff from an iPod. That'd be pretty sweet.
  19. Yes, there is. A huge difference. Unless you'd put Jay-Z, The Supremes, and Kraftwerk all in the same category. Not a very big difference. At least not compared to pop and classical. Put it this way, they have the same band (Beastie Boys) in two different categories. http://www.themeparkreview.com/forum/files...r_songs_133.jpg My point was that their categories are too subgenre and could have all been filed under rock/pop. It should have been something like this: - rock/pop - techno/dance - jazz - symphonic/film scores This ride is in Universal Studios. It's a theme park about movies. How they decided to cut all the movie music and include nothing but variants of rock/pop is beyond me.
  20. Awesome stuff Marcus, bravo! Definitely hear the JW influence. Marcus is one of the most insightful posters here. Sadly, with talent like that I don't expect to see him around here much. :-)
  21. Universal announced the soundtrack choices for the upcoming Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit, dubbed as the most technologically advanced roller coaster in the world. Sadly, it will not have any John Williams, nor will it have any other film music despite earlier speculation there would be. In the original list of music, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Back to the Future were all on there. Then they narrowed it down to the list they put out today and they were all cut. What bothers me even more is they list five categories- Hip Hop, Pop/Disco, Club/Electronica, Rock, and Country. Umm, is there really much of a difference between the first three? Wow nice diverse group of music. Good going Universal! http://www.hollywoodripriderockit.com
  22. I wonder if it will be better than Vienna Instruments
  23. Many of his best songs, including Thriller, Off The Wall, and Rock With You were written by a white man from the UK.
  24. Just to tie this in with JWFAN a bit http://ribotto.com/sitebuilder/images/mich..._et-351x407.jpg
