Might be my favorite moment of the score. So beautiful and powerful, soaring to incredible heights.

Alert alert! Just realized the Hope theme is a total Star Crash homage!

Anyway, I've been listening to the score and quite like it. Definitely doesn't outrank any of the proper JW SW scores but it's pretty solid. I kind of wish that Giacchino went further to distance himself from the classic SW sound (and the film in general to distance from the classic SW style), but its still a fun listen.

Jyn's theme is pretty solid and works pretty well throughout the score.
The Hope theme sounds kind of SW main title knock-offish at times but there are a few renditions that actually sound quite nice.
Guardians of the Whills theme is pretty cool and fits well with the characters.
I actually like the main Imperial theme, though I don't think it fits the tone of the film very well. Oddly enough an Imperial march imitation like this would have been a perfect addition to TFA for a general First Order theme (as the are of course an imitation of the Empire).
Krennic's theme on the other hand I think is very apt for the character. Both are quite catching too.

There seem to be a least a couple other motif/themes that I'm still processing out.
One would be what I would consider a "Death Star Plans" motif that you can hear at the beginning of "Star-Dust" and "The Master Switch." (which also sounds very John Barry to me)
Another one (and sort of the inverse) seems to be maybe a Dies Irae quote? At :40 in "Rebellions Are Built On Hope" and pretty sure there are other instances that I can't remember.

As for returning themes, oddly enough I thought there could have been far more. The lack of SW main theme was just fine (and its sole use, for
was fun). The Imperial march was used exactly the right amount. The Death Star motif got a couple plays which was a nice touch. The original Imperial theme also had some brief mentions, for which we should consider ourselves lucky, but, honestly, if Gia remembered it, he really should have just used it as the basis of the main Imperial theme and just worked off of that (I think its much more sinister than what he came up with at least, and the thematic continuity with ANH would have been great). The Force theme probably got a bit more play than it should have but whatever. However, and I will not forgive Gia for this, the Rebel fanfare was CRIMINALLY underused (not to mention I think at least a couple instances of it are missing from the soundtrack).

The lack of the classic end credits fanfare on the OST is somewhat annoying. I know I don't have to hear it again, but the full listening experience isn't quite there when "Hope" ends with the swell and doesn't go into it. Guess I'll have to make an edit in the meantime.

Also are we for certain the beginning and end of the credits are new recordings?

The best possible outcome is that John Williams stays healthy and composes Episode 8, Indy 5, and Episode 9...... and then Disney never makes another Episode film again (only doing spinoffs) or Indy film (with Harrison Ford) either

We need something different, but also something that will fit the whatever tone will be set for the film. There's good reason to think this will be the most comedic SW we've ever seen and Mothersbaugh seems to have the credentials. Mothersbaugh and Lord/Miller have worked just fine together thus far. See no reason to break that up.

I could see Howard or Desplat doing a Kenobi film. Would be fun to see things get further from the JW style. A Holkenborg Boba Fett film would be fun.

I'm sure at this point every bit of tracked music in TFA as been found and pointed out, but having just watched the film again for the first time in a bit a few new ones (to me) stood out (mostly Kylo Ren's themes thrown about in places - wonder if JJ wanted to make them more prominent).

Kylo Ren's "I'll show you the dark side" is from the unused Parade Grounds cue, and then when Poe is frozen it's "The Abduction" OST at :32 and when he meets Kylo it's "Torn Apart" OST at 3:41.
The rendition of Kylo's theme from "The Abduction" OST at :45 is used when Poe is released from his restraints, and at the end of the second Snoke scene.
Kylo's secondary theme from "Finn's Trek" 1:15 is used when we see his Star Destroyer before the Vader scene.

In terms of listening experience for Ways of the Force/Scherzo, I figure the best way is to somehow combine the OST/FYC and Scherzo concert suite into a single track. Haven't edited it yet myself, but I imagine it could work.

    Ok, here's one.

I agree—the problem isn't that the overall tempo is slow, just that it drags over the course of the track, and it's been bothering me enough over the past month that I decided to finally try an edit. I left the tempo as is at the beginning and just kept bumping it up during the track to try to keep it steady. By the end, the file about 4% faster, and the tempo is still a bit slower than the opening. But I'm happy enough with it that I'm moving it back into my TFA playlist.

Yes! I listed all the Poe's theme statements in the film as some of my favorite film + music moments, but actually my favorite statement of Poe's theme is in the credits (the blending with Finn's motif as you mention). It's just one of the best things I've ever heard. One hopes, with Rey off doing her Jedi thing in VIII, we'll see Finn and Poe together as a team and maybe get this blending again.

Yep. Battle of Hoth, Asteroid Field, and Rescue From Cloud City/Hyperspace make ESB undeniable on this front.

SW's got the killer combo of Tie Fighter Attack and Battle of Yavin (maybe my two favorite action cues) but the rest are no match for ESB's best.

There's of course great action cues in each film. Special mention to TPM I guess for (apparently) having a trilogy's worth of action cues.

Jason, I just realised this music is actually in the FYC, as it's tracked music from the first sequence!

It's on Attack on the Jakku Village, Part 1, at 2:49 to 3:03, and then jumping to 3:06 to 3:15. After that, the scherzo begins. In a custom edit, we could have now the complete finale.

Seems like that music was replaced wholesale for the more propulsive music used in the film (Attack on Jakku FYC approx. 0:23-0:36). The passage JJ refers to was probably set to score when the transport is flying towards the screen. You can actually hear it on the soundtrack on Jedi Steps/End Credits at 4:13 (abandoned First Order motif?).

Sounds like there might actually be a few edits in in the opening tack now that I listen to it. FYC at approx. 0:15, 0:23, 0:50. Insert?

Also in the longer 60 Minutes video they play the beginning of the opening but then they (60 Minutes) cuts to a bit here

that you can hear in the OST at 2:59 but not in the FYC (or the film).

So many! Here's just a few moments that make my heart flutter.

    (FYC because they're film versions)
    - Kylo Ren's introduction, from his shuttle landing to him getting off ("Attack on the Jakku Village Part 1" 4:28-5:03). Anyone who says there's no awesome epic music or moments, look no further.
    - When Rey reveals her face and tries to drink water, then slides down, then drives away, then eats, then hangs out by the AT-AT. Basically, the entirety of "The Scavenger" and "Lunchtime."
    - Every statement of Poe Dameron's theme. 1:52 on "I Can Fly Anything" when Finn knocks out the turret and they both cheer - a totally fun and classic Star Wars scene. 1:06 on "The Resistance" when Poe's X-Wing flies around taking out baddies showing he's "one hell of a pilot." 0:35 on "The Journey Home" when Starkiller blows and our heroes fly away.
    - The entirety of "Follow Me and the Falcon" is just a killer combo of film + music. One small moment I dig is 5:50 when it cuts to the Tie pilot, just a classic bad guy thing. The end is perfect as are all the Rebel fanfare statements.
    - Luke's theme when Han and Chewie show up gives me big goosebumps (I think you can hear it on "The Rathtars!" OST at 0:50)
    - I'm not in love with "The Rathtars" as a scene or as a cue but I really like the horn bit at 0:31 as Rey and Finn run down the corridor.
    - The Force theme when Han talks about, uh, the Force (unreleased, unfortunately).
    - The short motif in "Kylo Ren Arrives at the Battle" 0:24 when we see that beautiful shot of the Ties against the sun, Apocalypse Now style. Reminds me of the Death Star motif in the best way.
    - When the camera swings to stormtroopers being shot down to the rhythm of "The Resistance" at 0:48.
    - The beginning of "The Abduction" on OST with the bad ass rendition of Kylo's secondary theme as he lurches towards Rey, blocking her shots. Also the sweeping, tragic rendition of Rey's theme at the end of "The Abduction" when Finn chases after Kylo's shuttle.
    - Pretty much all of "Torn Apart" but I especially love at 1:33 as it shifts from sinister to sad as Han puts his hand on Ben's face and falls away and then at 2:04 when it shifts from sad to angry as Chewie flips shit.
    - "Burning Homestead" when Rey gets the lightsaber. Yeah, it's tracked, but nowhere else does the film give me chills this big.
    - The Scherzo bit at the start of "Ways of the Force" as the X-Wings start their trench run, and the big statement of the Force theme at 3:20 as Rey harnesses her potential.
    - "The Journey Home" at 1:51 when Rey hugs Leia and we hear Han and Leia's theme for the last time and I cry my eyes out.
    - The entirety of "Farewell and the Trip."
    - The entirety of "The Jedi Steps."
    - A bunch of others. I could spend all day doing this.

Yeah, I really like this movie and score.
