DominicCobb reacted to Jay in John Williams' new HAN SOLO AND THE PRINCESS arrangement (Debuted 2018)
This new arrangement debuted Wednesday, January 31st in San Diego, conducted by Williams himself, as an encore.  You can read @KingPin's description of it, here.

The new arrangment was just played again, last night in Glasgow, Scotland, and that performance is on Youtube!

With all due respect amigo, I think there's a difference between raising a dissenting opinion and adding nuance to a conversation (or a "discussion", as you say). Reading a thread on The Last Jedi movie and seeing you say "The problem with the film is it's subversive to be surprising, and is not dramatically satisfying" over and over, for example adds little for me. I can apply similar complaints for threads focusing around the score. You criticise this thread for being superficial, but citing the same issues you have over and over is, as has been mentioned, off-putting and the same thing you claim to want to avoid.

You think people should give more to this thread rather than simply stating banal "I like this score, it's good"? Why don't you ask people directly to expand their comments? Conversation and dialogue isn't a chess match (that in this case has the first pawn being moved from starting position again and again).

I was talking with a pretty intense Christian the other day, and I disagree with a number of tenets and ideas held within theiatic religions. But when he would share something regarding his philosophy, I didn't just keep saying, "Yeah, well science proved that wrong." "Mmm, you sure about that?" He was really passionate about this stuff, so I asked him more questions, as I wanted to actually have a conversation with him, and see how his perspectives contributed to who he was as a person. Every once in a while I would bring in my own religion and compare an idea to what he would say, and state my differing perspective...and ya know what, we had an awesome conversation, and left it with a higher understanding and respect for one another.

It's gonna be a few years before we can discuss TLJ in any kind of long and interesting way because a few posters feel an instinctive urge to respond to any posts of appreciation with some form of negativity, as if the one thing the internet needs more of is negativity.

I've pretty much stopped poking my head into all of the TLJ threads, or at least stopped bothering to reply - for this reason!  I thought TLJ was really good and its score even better.

I've still never met a person in real life (i.e. non-Internet) who was disappointed with TLJ, for what it's worth.

DominicCobb reacted to mrbellamy in Do you think no one asks for Williams anymore?
I wonder if he's even really taking offers anymore through his agency, but I bet either way they're fielding stuff through the year. We know he still takes commissions for concert works plus "Dear Basketball," and of course The Book Thief he went after himself. It doesn't make sense that there haven't been plenty of other things floating around him in the meantime that we just never hear about, even if they were never considered.

It does seem like he's lately more receptive to people he already knows, though, like people who are able to just contact him directly. If Kobe Bryant hadn't befriended Williams beforehand and instead just offered him the project out of the blue, he might not have considered doing it. I wouldn't be too surprised if Chris Columbus asked him to do something out of his recent directing/producing stuff like Night at the Museum, The Help, Percy Jackson, or even Pixels...

But I'm also sure the industry knows what it takes to get John Williams at this point. Whether it's budget or schedule or whatever else, I think it is probably true that a lot of people don't even consider him. But the whole "nobody wants his style" thing...I think if you were to go up to any filmmaker currently working on a movie -- assuming they have no particular attachments to another composer and aren't specifically looking for something non-orchestral -- gave them a blank check and no deadline and said "Surprise, John Williams would love to score your movie!" most of them would probably pass out before they could finish saying yes.

DominicCobb reacted to crumbs in THE LAST JEDI - OST Album MUSIC Discussion (No Movie Spoilers)
No, absolutely not, it's newly recorded.

Or Williams just thought it might be fun to open the score with a musical tribute of the original film for its 40th Anniversary? Not everything needs to have some deeper meaning. Likewise, just because something's been reused from a previous score doesn't mean Williams was being lazy. His Star Wars and Indy scores are filled with musical tips-of-the-hat.

In any event, it's literally 7 seconds in a 2.5 hour score. The alternative scoring choice was probably just 7 seconds of nondescript athematic music in the vein of Starry Night's opening 15 seconds. Almost the entirety of the opening sequence that follows (9 minute's worth) is brand new music, with maybe 40 seconds of existing themes. Hardly worth getting your knickers in a knot over.

It works okay but I definitely don't think it reflects Rey's stunned emotional state as evocatively as the more intimate "Burning Homestead" setting. With this the music tells me she's already made her choice the second the lightsaber hits her hand, but that's not the story. "Burning Homestead" captures the moment and Ridley's performance better, that Rey is still hesitant and weighing her decision to fight or flight until she finally turns it on. The OST version has too much immediate resolve which makes it feel kinda superficially "epic" to me.

Obviously I would have preferred a different original piece than tracking...who knows what other alternates he might have written but given just these two, "Burning Homestead" was the right choice for the film.

I believe that John Powell has gone through things considered more insulting than having to score a Star Wars movie and having to deal with John Williams composing a theme for one of the most iconic characters of the franchise for which he dedicated 40 years of his life.

So after seeing the film again, I noticed a few more unreleased bits that I quite like (well, all the unreleased bits I like, but here are a choice few):
    - There sounds to me like an additional, more subtle Poe's theme cut from "Escape" when he first appears that's really cool
    - The March of the Resistance variation that plays over Holdo's speech is one of the best in the score, I think, and not on the OST
    - The "On the Inside" motif is all over this score and the unreleased cues especially, the best being the scene where Finn and Rose sneak away from the main ship
    - Probably the best version of Rey's theme not included on the soundtrack, besides the training bit, is when she's in the Falcon searching for the rest of the Resistance

I've seen this misconception before but it has no basis in fact, it is just a misconception. The imperials have 2 motifs in ANH, 1 for the Empire/Death Star that plays as a very clear bad guy theme most prominently when Vader steps through the door of the blockade runner. There is also a storm trooper motif that is less obvious but apparent throughout the score. The Rebel Fanfare is like an adventure theme, it is grand, bold and exciting and not meant for the Empire at all.
