This was bugging me too, so I finally decided to check what that moment underscored.

100% not coincidental! The first few notes of the Resistance theme begin once Enfys Nest finishes saying, "they kept coming back, taking more, so finally the people resisted."

Another easter egg from Powell, clever guy!

I know this must have been posted before, at least in the youtube section but I think everybody should see this video from 13:57 to realise that Williams was(still are) in top form composing TLJ probable the greatest in the series.

I started watching the video but stopped when I realized it wasn't going to make me feel better about anything.
There are things I love in the movie, there are things I hate in the movie (and I've been complaining about them myself for the last four months). Still being able to love the things I do enjoy instead of throwing the whole thing away is important to me after being obsessed with the sequel trilogy for over 4 years. A big part of that is of course the soundtrack.
On that note, I'm curious, @BrotherSound what was the main theme he complained about?

Everyone here knows Waititi directed the last episode of S1 of the Mandalorian, which was hardly a comedyfest, right? Just checking

Glad to see that a bunch of you feel similarly. I went back and checked and I only got 2 minutes in, and it looks like I made the right choice in not watching any further.

What point was he trying to make about Duel of the Fates? He started off by saying it was "the most upsetting thing" about the score, seemingly referring to its absence. He then cites a trailer remix of DOTF, as if it were Williams music that got dropped from the film (with no supporting evidence).

He then laments that no prequel music was reused in the sequel trilogy (not strictly accurate, but I digress). Why would prequel themes reappear in a trilogy set ~60 years later, when those characters are long dead? Doesn't that directly contradict his earlier argument about re-contextualising older themes where they don't belong, just because they sound cool?

That was the moment I realised this video was like a YouTube comments section come to life. You know, those same people who complain that the trailer music sounded cooler than the actual scores, that the sequel trilogy had no memorable themes, etc.

Started off like an intelligently presented discussion about why the film doesn't work, finishes like a raving man-child, indistinguishable from thousands of other clickbait videos on these movies.

A shame because there's some interesting points but it goes off the rails and devolves into childish nonsense, also not particularly well researched. At least half a dozen examples were instances of tracked music (the Vader references, Force theme for Lando, Han & Leia for Leia's sacrifice, etc). He even mentions the leaked spreadsheet, which specifies these tracked cues.

It got tedious when he started ranting about (arguably) the film's strongest musical moment, the Rey/Force themes at the end. Why is Rey's Theme a bad choice when she's calling out to the Jedi, but the Force Theme is also a bad choice when she harnesses the Force and destroys Palpatine? The two moments are thematically interchangeable -- you could make the argument for either theme at either moment (personally I thought this was a missed opportunity for Williams to reprise the Rey/Force theme in counterpoint, like in TFA's credits).

And even though it's tracked, Han & Leia's theme for Leia's decision to contact Ben makes sense. He's the product of their relationship and Han died trying to save him. Leia's decision is the culmination of that relationship and her final act as Ben's mother. That said, I am curious how Williams originally scored that moment.

He also didn't make it clear that many of his points were a result of bad music editing than bad scoring. He cherry-picked re-contextualized musical moments in TROS while ignoring similar instances in films past (Emperor in TLJ, Luke's Theme for a random action scene in TPM, Luke's Theme tracked into random action nonsense in AOTC, The Duel for Yoda vs Palpatine in ROTS, etc).

It would be refreshing to hear a reasoned, calm discussion about the application of music in this film. If that's what you're after, this isn't the video you're looking for.

I mean the Star Wars main title theme a.k.a. Luke's theme.

That's definitely the most prominent use, but it does show up several other times: like when C-3P0 says goodbye before the memory wipe, during the Rey and Luke scene, once for Chewbacca, during 'Battle of the Resistance', etc.

I will say about TLJ, even if it is the least of the trilogy in terms of new themes, I’d argue in every other way it is the best score of the three. The cleaner editing certainly helps, but in general it is a more fully realized and coherent work. Nearly all the best cues from the trilogy come from that film, in my opinion, because they are ones that are so closely linked with the film’s sequences. The Supremacy, Holdo’s Resolve, The Battle of Crait, The Spark, etc. As a film score, rather than a soundtrack in isolation, it excels.

I’ll never forget watching TLJ for the first time in cinema and hearing that well-mixed wall-to-wall  score wash over me. An experience I’ll probably never have again with a brand new JW score. TFA and TROS were disappointing in comparison, even though in a way they’re compositionally maybe more interesting.

The more about TROS gets revealed, the more disappointed in the movie I get.

This was a score restore I had to try but the results have broken my heart.

I accomplished this with a single 8 second trim of JW's cue. How they felt obliged to dump the entire second half of Williams' intentions and replace it with tracked music from TFA is anyone's guess. Surely the film's most offensive instance of tracking, and certainly the most unnecessary.

    Thanks, fixed!

Yeah I went back and forth on it through the years but now it seems completely clear that any thoughts they might have had about the ending were entirely vague. Like I think they were probably always gonna redeem and then kill Kylo Ren but they didn’t have a clue where any of that was actually going.

Still think Force Awakens and Last Jedi are above average blockbusters. I’ll go back to those just as their own thing, I think they make interesting and entertaining counterparts as non-Lucas takes on Star Wars. Rise of Skywalker didn’t add much, might hatewatch it here and there like the prequels. The original three obviously hang together well and the first two are exceptional individually. But really have no interest in marathoning the “Skywalker Saga.”

As I said in my post, we're never going to agree on these things. We don't agree on what is even happening in the scenes so we're not going to agree on what they mean.

As a side note, check out the excellent comic series The Rise of Kylo Ren written by Charles Soule and illustrated by Will Sliney (the final issue came out on Wednesday). A lot of people like me had things we theorized and inferred about the character confirmed by the comic.

I think we disagree entirely on the thematic effect and meaning of his redemption (for example, I thought it was foreshadowed from TFA and only reinforced in TLJ), and what his story is supposed to mean. and what Star Wars is supposed to mean (i.e. mythic fairy tale vs. realistic one-to-one morality play). Vader himself did worse things and for longer, as did other characters in Star Wars - who also were redeemed (and some of them even lived and were forgiven, and happy, like Agent Kallus!) - and remember if a character deserved to be redeemed, they wouldn't need it (paraphrasing a C.S. Lewis quote). I'll agree with you that it should have been done better (and could have been done better) but that's on JJ and Chris Terrio. At the end of the day I'm just glad it happened and that John Williams wrote fantastic music for it.
But that we disagree is OK. Star Wars can mean different things to different people. Not interested in rehashing it any further online at this point. That's what twitter is for.

Again, disagree. But I think if he was going to disappear (die?) the kiss is too cruel to Rey, so he should have lived and continued the journey of atonement if it was going to happen.
Yet again, it obviously works for some people and doesn't for others so we don't need to argue the fine points endlessly. I suppose there's some hypocrisy in me continuing to respond, but since it appears few on this board share my opinion, I felt obligated to respond to show that not everyone here feels the same.

On the other hand, I see Ben's redemption as one of the few good things, plot-wise, in the movie. Different strokes!  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
