  1. Gosh I haven't been here in awhile but glancing through this thread there seems to be alot of criticism over this release. Oh well, everybody's got different tastes, but I enjoyed this score for what it is. The film itself is pretty "boutique" IMHO, in that it is overlong and indulgent as a piece of cinema, but if you are a Zack Snyder fan, you will be very happy. For this reason, the score also has a very "lumbering" nature. There's probably a solid 30 minutes of slo-mo in this film, and thus you will hear lots of synth-pad swells and slow fades. The guy did this whole thing from his bedroom in 8 months so it's actually more or less what I'd expect. Having said that, I think it fits very well with the aesthetic established in the 2 previous films. I'm an Elfman fan but I was disappointed in his score to the theatrical release for the most part. I do miss his Flash theme tho. I don't think the new score tops that bit. Anyways, I took the trouble to try to match music to film narrative (an old hobby well documented on my old blog http://cuebycue.blogspot.com/ ) and this is what I came up with. Not a bad way to spend an afternoon during a pandemic! This was all from a single pass so I'm sure there will be corrections...anyways, I thought I'd share here in case someone may find this useful. The release is pretty much chronological aside from track 1. The last tracks are suites. There's repetition to be sure, but no more than I'd expect from a superhero score coming out of the Zimmer school. 1: Song to the Siren (Rose Betts) (Barry Saves Iris From Truck) (After trk 12) 2: A Hunter Gathers (Superman’s Death, Motherboxes Awaken 1:51, Themyscira Motherbox 3:46, Bruce in Iceland Mountains 5:20) 3: Migratory (Martha Leaves Smallville House) 4: Things Fall Apart (Bruce and Alfred at the Airfield) 5: Wonder Woman Defending / And What Rough Beast (Terrorists Take Hostages, WW Investigates 1:54, WW Rescue (alt) 3:24) 6: World Ending Fire (Hippolyta Visits MB, Steppenwolf attacks/Fall of the Tomb 3:13, Chase Across the Plains 5:30) 7: Middle Mass (Steppenwolf Arrives in Russia) 8: Long Division (Bruce Searches for Allies on Plane) 9: No Paradise, No Fall (Janitor Meets Parademons, Artemis’ Arrow 2:07) 10: The Center Will Not Hold, Twenty Centuries of Stony Sleep (Kryptonian Ship, Vic Speaks w Silas 0:53, Diana Reads Temple Mural 1:41, Arthur Saves Fisherman 4:30, Arthur & Vulko Undersea 5:23) 11: As Above, So Below (Steppenwolf and DeSaad) 12: No Dog, No Master (Legend of Old Gods Amassing Against Darkseid, Attack Begins 2:33, Hiding the Motherboxes 5:12) 13: Take This Kingdom by Force (Steppenwolf Interrogates Atlanteans w Spider) 14: A Splinter from the Thorn That Pricked You (Lois and Superman’s Cloak) 15: Cyborg Becoming / Human All Too Human (Vic’s Football Memories, Accident 2:57, Silas Gives Vic Tape (Powers & Good Deeds) 4:25) 16: The Path Chooses You (Bruce Confronts Barry) 17: Aquaman Returning / Carry Your Own Water (Mera at the Motherbox, Steppenwolf Attacks 1:59, Arthur Arrives 3:27, Arthur & Mera 4:40, Vic Sees Batsignal/Steppenwolf Adds 2nd MB 6:28) 18: The Provenance of Something Gathered (Batman and Friends Meet Gordon) 19: We Do This Together (Arrival in Tunnel, Battle & Flood Escape 3:24) 20: The Will to Power (Steppenwolf’s Antilife Vision, Talk on Stryker’s Island 1:35, DeSaad & Darkseid 2:13) 21: Smoke Become Fire (JL Arrival at Batcave (alt)) 22: I Teach You, the Overman (Vic Explains MB and his Origin (alt), Superman Resurrection Idea/Martha Visits Lois 3:00) 23: A Glimmer at the Door of the Living (Manhunter Leaves Lois) 24: How We Achieve Ourselves (Debate Bringing Superman Back) 25: The Sun Forever Rising (Midnight Digging Talk) 26: Underworld (Sneak Into STAR Labs Compound, Silas Sees Vic/Kryptonian ship 3:53) 27: Superman Rising, Pt. 1 / A Book of Hours (Lois In Bed, Clark Goes Into Pool 1:28) 28: Beyond Good and Evil (Barry’s Idea/Lois’ Last Visit, Vic’s Vision of Darkseid’s Future 2:20, Barry Runs 2:54) 29: Monument Builder (Clark Rises and Flies to Monument Site) 30: Monument Destroyer (Clark Feels Threatened, Vs Flash 2:26, Vs Army & Fights Towards Bruce 3:26) 31: Urgrund (Lois Appears) 32: So Begins the End (Steppenwolf vs Silas, After Steppenwolf’s Escape 2:41) 33: The House of Belonging (Clark at Smallville House) 34: Earthling (Cornfield Talk and Reunion with Martha) 35: Flight Is Our Nature (Bruce: “Something Darker”, Troop Carrier Launch 0:41) 36: Indivisible (Motherboxes Unite and Tremors Around the World) 37: And the Lion-Earth Did Roar, Pt. 1 (JL Prep for Battle, Batmobile vs Parademons 1:21) 38: And the Lion-Earth Did Roar, Pt. 2 (JL Vs Parademons, JL Confronts Steppenwolf 1:44) 39: Superman Rising, Pt. 2 / Immovable (Clark Arrives and Kicks Ass) 40: At the Speed of Force (Barry Injured, Darkseid’s Boom Tube, Barry Runs To the Past 1:30) 41: My Broken Boy (Vic Inside Motherbox Vision, MB Separation) 42: That Terrible Strength (Steppenwolf Killed, Darkseid Warned, Darkseid Plans) 43: An Eternal Reoccurrence of Change (JL Emerges Into Dawn) 44: We Slay Ourselves (Silas Tape, Arthur Leaves, Epilogues) 45: Your Own House Turned to Ashes (Arkham Missing Lex, Meeting with Deathstroke) 46: All of You Undisturbed Cities (Knightmare Dream with Joker) 47: The Art of Preserving Fire (Manhunter Leaves Bruce (alt)) 48: The Crew at Warpower (Main Theme Suite) 49: The Foundation Theme (from Zack Snyder's Justice League) (Main Theme Suite 2) 50: Batman, a Duty to Fight / To See (Batman Suite) 51: Batman, an Invocation to Heal / To Be Seen (Batman Suite 2) 52: Wonder Woman, a Call to Stand / A World Awakened (WW Suite) 53: Flash, the Space to Win / Our Legacy Is Now (Flash, JL Suite) 54: Hallelujah (Allison Crowe, End Credits)

  3. Here's my analysis/cue guesses for Michale Kamen's "X-Men". http://cuebycue.blogspot.com/2016/06/x-men-kamen-2000.html Interesting that the Cyclops scene Jay mentions above actually made it into X-Men Apocalypse.
  4. Oh right, I just slammed out this one as well. I dunno, maybe it's a grower...and maybe not. http://cuebycue.blogspot.com/2016/06/alice-through-looking-glass-elfman-2016.html
  5. Ancient thread, I know but it's one of my favorite scores of recent years...so here's my latest analysis post: http://cuebycue.blogspot.com/2016/06/tron-legacy-daft-punk-2010.html
  6. Here's my analysis post and "disassembly" of the Revenge of the Sith soundtrack: http://cuebycue.blogspot.com/2016/05/star-wars-ep-iii-revenge-of-sith.html I think there's some fantastic writing here, really gut-wrenching and beautiful, but I still think I like the themes from Episodes I and II better...probably a taste thing. Some of the stuff here is really sophisticated but not really developed as a thematic device, such as the "creepy theme" in Padme's Ruminations. I freakin' LOVE that, especially when the organ comes in! I wish he'd developed that more somehow.... I also wish he'd put together a concert version of Grievous' themes, I can imagine that being lots of fun. Anyways, there's probably some mistakes here, I'll be correcting as the days go by.... Now, if all goes according to the OT schedule we should have complete versions of the prequel movies by 2019...
  7. I did a pass below, but I didn't get into functional harmony or anything like that. Of course there's plenty more to be said so more analysis is always welcome. http://cuebycue.blogspot.com/2016/04/star-wars-force-awakens-williams-2015.html
  8. Continuing my breakdowns of the Star Wars soundtracks, here's the film sequences/themes that go with the cues found on the Attack of the Clones soundtrack: http://cuebycue.blogspot.com/2016/04/star-wars-ep-ii-attack-of-clones.html Thanks to John Takis who turned me on to Jay's work here (and of course thanks Jay!):
  9. Thanks! Clones and Sith will be coming up, and then the Star Wars films will be complete. I may move on to other Williams scores like Minority Report or AI. War of the Worlds also could use some captions I think...
  10. I just finished posting my analysis of Star Wars Ep I: The Phantom Menace. I "think" I got everything right, but I never know until I'm corrected! Anyways: http://cuebycue.blogspot.com/2016/04/star-wars-ep-i-phantom-menace-williams.html Below is my breakdown for the official OST to save a click. My full post linked to above contains more stuff about the themes indicated and also a breakdown of the Ultimate Edition. I kind of used the UE as the "basic score" even though it's such a hot mess. Until we get a better version, I'd rather use that as a source rather than, err "other editions"...as great as they may be. Anyways, hope this is useful. (Mike Troxell's analysis was pretty handy as a starting point. Why is that page not listed in the Analysis page? (http://www.jwfan.com/?p=3006) ) Trk Dur Title Film Sequence 1 2:55 Star Wars Main Title and The Arrival at Naboo 0:00: Main Title (Luke's theme) 1:25: A Republic cruiser carrying Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan approaches and lands on the Trade Federation station leading a blockade of Naboo. Anakin offers shelter to the heroes (suspense strings, muted brass/strings). 2:31: They reach Anakin's home and meet Anakin's mother and C3P0 (regal winds/strings/muted brass/harp...). 3:11: C3P0 is activated. Anakin comes to his rescue (playful winds intercut with brief Jar Jar's theme variations and Anakin’s theme fragments). 5 2:37 The Sith Spacecraft and The Droid Battle 0:00: Darth Maul's ship lands on Tatooine. He sends out drones. (Sith Chant with Darth Maul’s theme on percussion/dissonant strings/brass accents, swirling strings/piano/percussion). 0:18: At the final battle, fighting continue in space around the Federation's Droid Control Ship and down on the fields of Naboo. Padme's palace invasion forces reach a window (Droid Army Attack rhythmic motif, brief Duel theme variation interlude on strings). 6 4:07 The Trip to the Naboo Temple and The Audience with Boss Nass 0:00: The Queen's ship arrives near Naboo, as the pilot teaches Anakin how to operate the ship's controls. Queen Amidala considers her options and asks for Jar Jar's help. Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan confer ("mission" string rhythm/percussion/wind ornaments). 0:56: The Queen's starship lands in a forest (brass figures, brass/wind fanfares, strings). 1:44: Jar Jar reports that Otoh Gunga is deserted (jaunty winds/chimes, thoughtful textures) but is able to lead the group to the Gungans' "sacred place" (swirling winds, determined brass/strings). Queen Amidala approaches Boss Nass (recorder solo/chimes, poignant strings). 2:38: Padme steps forward to reveal herself as the real Queen, and makes a personal plea to the Gungans for their help in fighting the Federation. The 2-headed, bi-lingual MC introduces the contestants. Anakin waves to the crowd. A "flag parade" moves onto the track (regal, militaristic march on brass and drums/soaring strings, extended concert suite alternate). 8 3:53 He Is the Chosen One 0:00: When the Jedi Council refuses to take Anakin on as a trainee, Qui-Gon offers to train him himself (fateful string figures, Force theme cut off). The Council tells Qui-Gon to first go back to Naboo with the Queen and investigate the Sith he encountered (Anakin’s theme, noble brass chords, thoughtful/sinister textures). 1:34: The heroes return to the launch pad (Luke's theme variation in trombones into fanfare). Obi-Wan asks Qui-Gon why he does not agree with the Jedi Council (low strings). Qui-Gon gives Anakin some advice and explains midi-chlorians to him (Anakin's theme, etc.). Queen Amidala appears and after everyone boards the ship, they launch for Naboo (regal figures, fanfare). 9 4:24 Anakin Defeats Sebulba 0:00: Before the pod race, Sebulba sabotages Anakin's pod racer (dissonant strings/sinister winds). 0:24: Qui-Gon gives Anakin some final advice (soft strings, Force theme on horn). 0:46: Jabba the Hutt makes his appearance (loose Jabba theme variation on brass with soaring polyphonic fanfare figures, snare roll). He signals for the race to begin (extended alternate). 1:37: Anakin's pod racer loses power due to Sebulba's sabotage (building tension in strings/brass). Anakin fixes the problem and pulls ahead of Sebulba (unused alternate, partially replaced in film by "Escape from Naboo"). 10 4:40 Passage Through the Planet Core 0:00: After entering the Gungan bubble city, Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan and Jar Jar are taken to see the Gungan leader Boss Nass, who refuses to help the Naboo. Qui-Gon uses a Jedi Mind trick to obtain transport to the Naboo capitol (subdued female choir/synth texture leading into a recorder solo, tremolo textures). 1:59: Qui-Gon bargains for Jar Jar to accompany them (strings/harp/etc, dialogue between noble trombone figures and gruff tuba figures). 3:02: The heroes depart in a "bongo sub". As Jar Jar explains why he was banished, the ship is pursued by a giant "gooberfish" (female choir with wind ornaments, intercut with brass/timpani accents, soaring brass "escape" figure). 11 4:57 Watto's Deal and Kids at Play 0:00: Qui-Gon makes a new bet with Watto, with Anakin's freedom as the stakes (ironic winds, strings). Padme is disturbed when she finds out Anakin has never even finished a race yet (low winds, wind and string dialogues, Anakin’s theme on winds). 1:23: The Sith probe droids scan the city (Sith Chant) (unused). 1:38: Qui-Gon makes a bargain with Watto to enter Anakin in the pod race (high synth/harp/perc.). 1:52: Qui-Gon talks with Shmi, and tells her that the Force is strong with her son (cor anglais, mystical strings/winds, Force theme on horns). She asks the Jedi to help her son (Shmi Skywalker’s theme on poignant strings). 3:16: Anakin's friends arrive but are skeptical of his racing chances (playful string and metal percussion, rhythmic wind accents/ornaments, Anakin’s theme on flute). Jar Jar gets in trouble (playful strings/perc./etc). 12 3:24 Panaka and the Queen's Protectors 0:00: During the last battle, the heroes make it to the palace launch bay. Naboo resistance pilots rush to their ships and take off (action brass, Taking Off motif, Luke theme fragment, Taking Off). 0:35: As the Naboo fighters approach the Federation Droid Control ship they engage enemy fighters (action brass, Taking Off motif, Duel of the Fates, alternate). 1:11: With the palace launch bay secured, Padme moves her forces towards the throne room (brass figures, syncopated string rhythms). The gates open and the heroes are faced with Darth Maul. Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan prepare to fight the Sith Lord (Darth Maul percussion theme, alternate). 1:57: Inside a Naboo fighter cockpit, Anakin opens an alternate path for Padme's forces to enter the palace. Afterwards his ship takes off towards the Federation's Droid Control ship on autopilot (rising figures/fanfares with Taking Off motif). 2:39: Padme's forces progress through the palace and engage Battle droids (alternate, swashbuckling action figures). 13 4:51 Queen Amidala and The Naboo Palace 0:00: On Naboo, Gunray threatens the Naboo governor (tragic strings/muted brass). 0:33: After departing Tatooine, Padme reviews transmissions from Naboo (flute/harp/suspense textures), and notices Anakin, who misses his mother. The heroes are met by Palpatine and the Chancellor, who sympathize with Naboo's situation (low rising bass). 2:52: (From beginning act) Queen Amidala contacts Gunray and pressures him to end the Federation blockade (concerned wind and string figures, recorder featured). 4:02: Gunray moves to cut off her communications with Naboo Senator Palpatine on Coruscant. She realizes that an invasion will soon begin (tense brass/strings, horn/recorder featured over string/synth textures, ending in suspense swell). 14 5:14 The Droid Invasion and The Appearance of Darth Maul 0:00: As the final battle begins, the Gungan army appears out of a mist and stops on a grassy field (ethnic percussion/timpani). 0:31: The Battle droids on Naboo are activated and begin marching towards the Gungan army (Trade Federation March on brass/winds and snare). 1:05: (From opening act) Trade Federation invasion forces descend on Naboo and disembark (Trade Federation March on brass/snare/timpani with subtle synth pizzicato elements). 1:48: Back to Droid/Gungan battle? (unused I think). 2:10: Back to 1st act and underwater on Naboo: the Jedi's bongo sub regains power but is pursued by more giant sea creatures (brass/percussion action accents/figures). 2:47: The droid army approaches Theed, the Naboo capital, and takes control of the city (Trade Federation March reprise without synth). 3:16: Unused (siren effects, Darth Sidious and Darth Maul talk?) 3:46: Gunray consults with Darth Sidious (Emperor’s theme on male choir and muted brass, wind ornaments). 4:17: The bongo sub briefly loses power (female choir/swirling strings, low brass cadence). 4:37: Back to final battle? (Duel of the Fates motif, unused). 15 3:48 Qui-Gon's Noble End 0:00: Qui-Gon and Darth Maul duel (choral intro to Duel of the Fates, unused). 0:13: In the 1st act escape from Naboo, Amidala's transport launches but is targeted by blockade ships. The shield generator is hit, but R2-D2 fixes the problem (rhythmic strings/brass "mission" motif modulating upwards with various ornamental wind/percussion accents). Also: Anakin defeats Sebulba in the final lap of the Tatooine pod race (cue possibly originally for Padme's invasion of the palace, but that scene ended up scored with Duel of the Fates in the final film). 1:29: Qui-Gon and Maul duel in the Generator Room as Obi-Wan is trapped behind a timed force field (Darth Maul’s drum theme/piano/eerie synth textures, Sith Chant). 2:17: Maul impales Qui-Gon (poignant Duel of the Fates motif). The Gungans are rounded up (tragic Fate figures in brass). 2:56: Padme is brought before Gunray in the throne room (Darth Maul’s theme/Sith Chants). The false Amidala distracts Gunray and Padme is able to turn the tables with the aid of some hidden blasters (action brass figures, Duel of the Fates, hesitant figures). 3:26: Obi-Wan waits for the shields to fall so he can engage Maul (Darth Maul’s theme). 16 3:09 The High Council Meeting and Qui-Gon's Funeral 0:00: Padme sends away the Gunrays. Palpatine congratulates the heroes, especially Anakin (soft strings/harp, noble brass/drums, strings, etc). 0:54: Yoda greets Obi-Wan and tells him that the Jedi Council allows him to train Anakin, but that he has grave reservations (brief Yoda’s theme in trombones, suspense strings into brief Vader's theme motif, mysterioso strings). 1:48: Qui-Gon is laid to rest on a burning funeral pyre. Obi-Wan tells Anakin that he will train him. Master Windu and Master Yoda suspect that another Sith Lord yet survives (noble brass, somber choir chant/Force theme on low strings, mysterious harp/winds). 17 9:37 Augie's Great Municipal Band and End Credits 0:00: The Gungans parade through the streets of Theed. Boss Nass is given a "peace" globe. (brass fanfare/march with children's choir and ethnic percussion, based on Emperor’s theme in major key) 1:24: End credits, Luke's theme 2:15: Duel of the Fates suite 6:28: Anakin's theme/Vader theme
  11. Yeah, that's the motif which I previously confused with Finn's theme. I redubbed it the "Escape motif" for myself, but I can see a rhythmic similarity to the OT rhythms you list. I suppose it could just be a "stylistic" thing...
  12. I will be curious to hear an assembly of the 2nd Snoke scene. There's an "isolated edit" by Faleel out there, but it doesn't have every single frame-by-frame bit AFAIK. Good luck!
  13. You know, DominicCobb, I think you're right, it's not a concert suite just an edit. I mean, clearly JW is not going to say "Ok here's the one you've been waiting for...SNOKE!". Oh wait, actually that'd be awesome in concert! Anyways yeah, I'm going to relabel it as "alternate edit" in my post, thanks for the feedback. As for Finn's theme in I Can Fly Anything - yep you got me Datameister. That's embarrassing! It's such an important supportive element I just assumed it was Finn's theme. I will fix that - thanks very much for pointing that out. Goddam this board is humbling. Poe's theme I still like to think of as just "his" theme, because when he's in that tracking-shot of taking out all those baddies on Takodana it's such a great Poe show-off sequence and works so splendidly with that soaring theme.
  14. Hi John, I've been looking at your 2002 cue breakdown for SW Ep 2: AOTC - fantastic work!  I've written some soundtrack analysis of the Star Wars films (Ep 1-3, 7) but from the standpoint of the album, as opposed to the film order.  I would like to do something similar with the Prequel trilogy and I hope you don't mind if I draw from your comprehensive analysis for a future write-up on Ep 2 (credit to your post will be given of course).  Assuming that's OK, did you ever do something similar for Ep 1 and 3?

    Best wishes

Hey, Ed. Thanks for getting in touch! And sorry about the delayed response.

Truth be told, I'm a little embarrassed by that AOTC piece. It's rather out of date by this point, and contains some inaccuracies. The community now knows much more and better info about the score. I recommend referencing this thread for starters:

In any case, I'd prefer the analysis with my name on it not be linked if you don't mind. As for credit, I suppose it depends on what you intend to use! If you like, you can send me a preview of the post when it's ready and I'll let you know what I think. Regardless, I certainly do appreciate your courtesy in reaching out like this!

      Sincerely,

      John

Thanks for the link to the cue list thread John, I'll probably just use that thread as a starting point.  I just finished parsing Phantom Menace completely on my own and frankly it's worn me out!  Having some of that  assembly info already done will make things easier...

      Best wishes

      Ed

  15. I actually went back and forth on that. Faleel's edit has it as Bring Her To Me, but in the film I thought I heard some brass bits near the end of that scene which are not in that track. I could be wrong about that...is it the consensus that it's the actual underscore? When listening to that scene at high volume for the underscore, Snoke's voice just BLASTS out of the soundfield...
