  1. My official review of both of Newman's Bond scores: I do love many of Newman's scores but boy are those Bond scores just not fun. Bring back Arnold! Anyway, I'm sure the Finding Dory score will have some gorgeous moments like the original.
  2. Yeah that line about the cheesiest electronic music was really confusing. No idea what he could be referring to. In principle I kind of agree that the music should have been much more prominent in the mix in many places. But that stuff about the recording sounding artificial is stupid.
  3. http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/arts/la-et-cm-john-williams-afi-20160607-snap-story,amp.html Op-ed in the LA Times about why the AFI awarding a composer is important. I largely agree with the piece although this sentence struck me as a massive overstatement of Dudamel's contributions to The Force Awakens:
  4. Yep, as soon as she yelled "Hold the door!" my hand was over my mouth and my eyes were wide. Brilliant sequence.
  5. For me, he's a "greatest hits" composer. He's great at writing main theme songs but the action/under scoring . Just put together a playlist of his theme songs and you're set. That Iron Man 3 main theme really is great.
  6. If you're meaning pop bands then no. I could list off a bunch of indie/alternative bands I think are just good now as they were back then.
  7. Same. I couldn't be disappointed with this news but I was definitely hoping Elfman would get a chance to do a full Avengers score.
  8. I preordered it on Amazon back in December! Thanks to Amazon's preorder price guarantee combined with them underestimating the final price, I'm getting it at a $15 discount!
  9. "It's an energy field created by all living things." Not saying you're wrong, but technically this could be used as an excuse to score any character with the Force Theme
  10. I think I'm siding with the common prediction that this was a theme for that one specific scene and will never be reprised. I hope I'm wrong.
  11. Shawshank is a score I've long loved in the film but have never actually owned the OST so this was a no-brainer purchase for me. Can't wait to get it!
  12. MASH I appreciate for jumpstarting Altman's career as a major director but think it hasn't aged well at all. The Player I love a lot, it just wouldn't be among my 5 favorites. Popeye I'd categorize more as an interesting failure than an actual good movie. Images I still haven't seen and really need to! The other 2 were pretty unremarkable to me.
  13. I'm so happy that Criterion is putting out a proper release for McCabe & Mrs. Miller. It's for sure my favorite Robert Altman movie. Maybe this isn't the thread for it but I think this would be my Top 5 Robert Altman ranking: 1. McCabe & Mrs. Miller 2. Short Cuts 3. Nashville 4. The Long Goodbye 5. Gosford Park
  14. The scores are fairly different in tone from the Goldsmith/Horner Trek scores, but of course so are the movies. For me, these are excellent, memorable, melodic, accessible sci-fi action-adventure scores. I'm not arguing that Giacchino is a master composer but his music is always those 4 adjectives and I always look forward to hearing his new stuff, even if it can be disappointing at times (like Zootopia).
  15. It's true. Once you know to listen for it, you can totally tell it's Craig doing an American accent. "I will remove these restraints and leave this cell with the door open."
  16. I wanna hear about when Williams first played Spielberg the Jaws main theme.
  17. Being Debbie Downer continually popping in just to reiterate over and over that you don't enjoy Giacchino's music on a discussion board of people excited for a soundtrack release isn't exactly striking any blows for intellectual freedom. People do the same thing on Hans Zimmer-dedicated threads. I don't like Zimmer's music very much but unlike others I don't feel the need to constantly say that I don't. EDIT: This isn't to say that these threads should be nothing but enthusiastic cheerleading, but what's the point of popping in just to say something like "This will be mediocre and unworthy of attention." What's that contributing?
  18. I've certainly been guilty of it in the past (as most have I'm sure) but a good lesson I've learned is that if you have some kind of weird pop cultural axe to grind, try just not. Ultimately it's not important and nobody cares that you consider some music/film/media/whatever beneath you. It's kind of like the people who keep on harping on how much they hate reality TV. We get it and we don't care.
  19. Hire a security detail to keep him locked in his house composing. He's only allowed to leave to go to the scoring stage.
  20. Me neither. I'm looking forward to the deluxe edition Varese will inevitably put out in 2018 that was the version I wanted all along
