John Williams - Minority Report (LLL)

This listen convinced me that this is one of Johnny's masterpieces.  The blend of brooding introspection, unreachable memories of happier times, thrilling action and chase music, and vocals crying for justice is unparalleled in any other scores I've heard.  I love how you can tell from listening that this fits right in between his prequel and Harry Potter scores, and is very post-AI pre-War of the Worlds, yet doesn't feel like it steals from any of those, its its own thing.  And its fantastic from start to finish, especially the main program of the LLL edition.  I forgot how much I like the alternate openings to The Crime and Freezing Water, so I'll probably swap those with their main program counterparts next time around.  What a score!

1:11-1:18 (horns take over the line from then but the strings continue in the back until 1:22)

Goddammit I had to listen to the full track because of you, I can't just stop there. That fiddle near the end rules! Adds some much needed diversity and more fun.

Not to me! The OST version is much choppier.

What I find kinda weird is that this is a huge, complex score with lots of themes, I've only watched the movie 3 times and heard the whole thing 4-6 times, all of those listens being in the last 4 months, and I already feel like I know it very well and largely grasp the structure. JW made it easily graspable despite its scale!

Holko reacted to Brando in Favorite JW Score (aside from Star Wars)
Hook is my all time favorite JW score, because it is loaded with themes and the score works so brilliantly with the film, and in particular, the Childhood theme used in a specific sequence comes to mind. You use the word 'engaged' and what comes to mind is the scene where Peter breaks down and finally remembers his childhood, and the music drops and IMO so crucial (and Robin Williams monologue) to this scene because you feel him, you understand what it's like to feel abandoned, or 'they forgot about me', as Peter says to Tink. Everyone experiences that and they know what that pain feels like and when I watch this scene, the music makes me feel these same emotions that Peter is feeling, and it works so well in regards to the film.

And then, a few minutes later, JW uses the same theme to launch Peter into the sky as he remembers why he came to Neverland: his kids were his happy thought, and he remembers how to fly and he becomes Peter Pan, and the music takes a complete 180 and goes from heartbreakingly sad to a huge, triumphant, heroically return of Peter Pan:

    High five!
This stuff is just too unquantifiable and even changes over time or depending on your mood.

From all his scores that I tried, I liked these ones enough to buy: Seconds, Planet of the Apes (also own Escape because of the LLL box, it's not bad but I'm not sure I'd have bought it if they were sold separately), Logan's Run, Alien, STTMP, Legend, The Ghost and the Darkness, and The Mummy. From these, I could probably whittle down the absolute love favourites to... Planet of the Apes, Alien and Legend maybe?

Nah it's destroying everything the OT crew worked for and making Vader's ultimate turn and sacrifice pretty much completely irrelevant if Palpatine just somehow returns.

Very interesting selections but I'm worried that an ensemble this small could be too bare and not varied enough for 2 whole discs.
