@Jay Just so you know, fake italics that use special characters do not play well with screen readers and therefore render the website hard to read for people with disabilities.

Other than that, can't wait to read that book!!

My biggest criticism of the film is that Indy doesn't make the choice to go home, Helena makes it for him.

That's... a bold choice to make for your protagonist 5 minutes before the credits roll, robbing them of their agency. There needed to be a moment of self-reflection where Indy realised, as a man of science, he couldn't stay in the past without consequences for the future. All the film needed was a few shots of cowering families huddled together while the battle raged around them. A mother and father consoling a scared child, which provides Indy the epiphany he needed to return home and repair his life with Marion.

There's stronger characterization they could've explored with the Dial. Voller has a very clear motivation for wanting the Dial. Indy... doesn't really have any? Which is very strange, because it seems like the film was setting this up when Basil pleaded with him to destroy the Dial but Indy just kept it? What if he's obsessed with the Dial's power and wanted to use it to save Mutt?

That story might have been stronger, creating parallel objectives for Voller and Indy. Voller wants to kill Hitler. Indy wants to save his son. In true Indiana Jones style, neither get what they want, but the lesson Indy learns is that repairing his life with Marion is more important than changing history to save his son, with all the consequences that would wrought. Maybe the film's emotional climax is Indy having a moral dilemma where he can save Mutt but Voller changes the outcome of WWII, so he has to let Mutt go in order to stop Voller?

I think all this would've landed much more satisfyingly than Voller just dying in a plane crash and Indy getting knocked out and their subsequent return trip happening off-screen.

    Saw the movie on Monday.

If I had to compare the score to any of the previous parts in the series, I'd pick  "The Last Crusade". There was also really one leading new theme (Grail) and the compelling action music that dominated the score. There is even more of it here. Helena's Theme we hear more often in the film itself in adventure arrangements (that are really great) than the one we know from last concerts. It's only in its full "Golden Age" glory during the end credits.

But there is a lot going on here, it is dynamic and dense, because there is no shortage of action in the movie. There are also some musical surprises. In one of the scenes I heard something that would fit to "Dirty Harry" or "Bullitt" or other Shiffrin's scores form 70's. Very unusual for Williams.  There's another theme, more exotic, similar to "Tintin". And a lot of "Raider's March" and twice

The music is very intense, just like "The Last Crusade" mixed with "Tintin". And sometimes it rushes like "The Lost World". The music accompanying action scenes, with motifs accompanying the antagonists, is very intense and the whole score is very "busy" , if I may use such a word. Williams had a lot to do here. And must have had fun!

And there is theme related to the McGuffin - very simple one.

I can't wait to hear the score from the album and I have no doubt that it will be a great listening experience.

Williams and Ross are listed as conductors.

And the movie itself? Without giving away any spoilers, I really liked it. A lot of humor, lots of action, with a solid emotion in the background. There were moments that really surprised me. The biggest acting star here is indeed the fantastic Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

Can't wait to see it again!

Random question but… are they de-aging the voice? I’m guessing yes but I’m wondering how they handled the process for dubs.

I still think you are way over estimating the public's attention to film music. If John Williams, Hans Zimmer, James Horner, Danny Elfman were never born, successful films would still have been made. Movies were successful before John Williams and will be afterwards. And here is a study that confirms how bad people are when it comes to recognizing film music, even when a chunk of the people polled claimed to be life long film music fans. Even though Harry Potter is the most recognized film score in this study, only 36% recognized the main theme:

The majority of the respondents bragged that they can identify movies on the music alone, but they may need to get their ears checked, as the results of the film score quiz had some puzzling results. Despite “Star Wars” being among the list of most recognizable themes, 45% of respondents actually guessed incorrectly or didn’t know what film this music was from.

'The iconic, ear piercing theme from the classic horror trope “Psycho” was also misidentified as the theme for “Pirates of the Caribbean” by 17%.
The survey conducted by OnePoll on behalf of OPPO Find X3 Pro revealed when respondents were asked to listen to the theme from “Sherlock Holmes,” 31% of respondents said they simply didn’t have a clue.

When asked to listen to the “Inception” theme, three in 10 respondents thought they were taking a trip to Hogwarts and incorrectly thought this was the theme to “Harry Potter.”

A quarter of respondents thought Indiana Jones was about to snatch another artifact when listening to the theme for “The Dark Knight” – misidentifying this theme as “Raiders of the Lost Ark.”

Forty-five percent of those polled are already blasting film scores in their headphones and listening to movie soundtracks while going about their life.
