  1. I think this is far from the first time that Olympics are doing selections from the classical repertoire, but I'd have liked something more unique, like the pieces in Tokyo Olympics. Maybe some actual Chinese classical music would've been better. What was annoying is that the pieces started repeating after a while. They should have covered the whole procession with music, rather than half of it, and then looping it back from the beginning.
  2. Yeah, I noticed that as well. Here's the whole sequence with the (almost) CE3K fanfare: BeijingTrimmed.mp4
  3. Wait, someone actually filmed that ovation? Where can I watch it?
  4. Obviously the degree to which you comment about it
  5. I think most people don't. That orchestra is like 1 or 2 years old, with most of the players being children and amateurs.
  6. An open-air concert with the Longyearbyen symfoniorkester. The polar bears would serve as a nice deterrent against non-serious fans and autograph hunters.
  7. At this rate, after La Scala, John Williams will surely do a concert with the Oslo Philharmonic
  8. I've also had that post-concert depression after Vienna, and I do have it now after Berlin. Luckily, La Scala next year gives me another John Williams experience to look forward to, so it's not that bad.
  9. Should've stood for 6 more minutes and set a new record
  10. I'll have to listen to the recordings to give you an exact answer, but I do remember there were some slip-ups in the brass and woodwind sections, as well as problems in the percussion. A quite obvious one yesterday was during the Theme from Jurassic Park, when the timpani came in way too early with the roll.
  11. I have a feeling that, looking purely quantitatively, Berlin had more technical errors throughout the three concerts. However, the Berlin Phil seemed much more passionate, John Williams was happier, and the audience was out of this world, especially on Saturday. They were standing up after every piece! The eye contact between the players and the conductor, the constant smiles in every section - it looked like they were enjoying what they're doing, and this enjoyment was passed on to the audience. It made me really emotional, and I was on the verge of crying several times on Saturday. John Williams was much more talkative in Berlin. It didn't feel like he was reciting a script, it didn't have that aura of being formal. I cannot wait to see the La Scala concerts. I don't think it's quite possible to beat the experience of Berlin Phil. Then again, I thought the same about Wiener Phil right after those concerts.
  12. Jim, his girlfriend and Thor are coming there soon. I'm standing by the entrance. Hopefully, we'll get a table. Looks like there are quite a few people there.
  13. That 14-minute standing ovation at the end. John Williams has left the building, the orchestra is gone, the lights are dimmed, but half of the remaining seats are clapping like crazy. I've never experienced anything like this in my life.
  14. Some of us are meeting at Lindenbräu in about 15-20 minutes!
  15. He looked at the guy, trying to understand what he wanted. Once he realized he wanted an autograph, he just shook his head and continued walking to the backstage area. The guard soon came and threw the guy out the door.
  16. Here's the standing ovation from the second concert. John also received flowers:
