Evanus reacted to The Dark Trilogy in SW Prequels vs Hobbit trilogy (scores AND films)
This. I never understood the hype around these scores. LotR and Hobbit scores are very boring ones, imo.
The best ones are the first, the third LotR and Desolation of Smaug. But not in the Level of Williams. Maybe someone will hate it what I say now, but all 9 Star Wars scores are better than LotR and Hobbit combined.

For the movies, I think Unexpected Journey and Desolation of Smaug wins the game. Battle of Five Armies is not a good movie. I prefer Revenge of the Sith.

I mean, he had all six films remastered. He could have easily sprung on the chance. I know he told Universal he'd love to recut Kong. No, it seems he's pleased with the finished piece. He also said as much:

Evanus reacted to JTN in The Official Howard Shore Thread
Peter Jackson was never supposed to direct the two Hobbit films, but because Del Toro dropped out, he had to step in and do it himself, make 3 films instead of 2, without any prep. Seeing the end result and hearing what Jackson and others said during filming, it’s not hard to see how Jackson was “forced” to do the Hobbit films and he didn’t enjoy the process. Nor did many fans of the LOTR films, including myself. They did 3 long films out of a single book and it shows. In my opinion the Hobbit films are nowhere near the greatness of the LOTR trilogy. And I believe Peter Jackson feels the same way. One possibility why he didn’t want to recut the films could be similar to why David Fincher doesn’t want to revisit Alien 3: Because making them might have been such an unpleasant experience for him that he just wants to put it all behind him. When I saw the films, I felt almost as sad and disappointed like when I saw the Star Wars sequel trilogy. In my opinion The Hobbit films are huge missed opportunities that not even Peter Jackson’s genius could save.

And I felt the same thing regarding the music. I couldn’t connect with it at all, like I do with the score to the LOTR trilogy which I consider one of the greatest achievements in filmmusic history.

I'm yet to be persuaded by the idea that LLL would be pursuing Gia's scores given how new they are. (don't read that as a lack of enthusiasm - I'd buy them!)

But yes, given the current hype around JP there would be no better time to get JP3 out and finish the book. Nice new cover series design to finish off...

MV did only mention a few 60s releases coming from Universal this year, but one can hope that he wasn't being too literal.

Damn, didn't know so many people hated Giacchino's work. Pity. I love all the composers mentioned by name here so I have to come up with my own answer.

While I like their work on The Social Network and Soul, I don't think Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross are all that in the grand scheme of things. Empire of Light specifically is a film score that flat out put my ass to sleep. Not sure why Thomas Newman wasn't asked to score that film, but he was missed.

Their score for the new Ninja Turtles movie was really disappointing and probably the worst part of an otherwise great movie. Not saying they're bad composers, can't think of a bad film composer at the top of my head. But man, I wish they knocked it out of the park more often.

Sidenote: John Powell should've won the Oscar for How To Train Your Dragon. Was mad at 12, mad now.

Can't agree with LOTR. One of the great achievements in film music. But I agree Shore in general is overrated. Besides LOTR, I honestly do not think his resume is that impressive. Not even The Hobbit scores.

Hey, look at this old thread.

I can't stand Giacchino, Desplat, or Zimmer, but Howard Shore has the biggest disparity, for me, between the praise he gets vs the actual quality of the music. Minutes upon minutes go by in LotR without anything interesting happening, and he has entire scores that are comprised of nothing but the boring underscore in those films. I think it's easy to get distracted by the 18 french horns in the Minas Tirith cue, or the beautiful solo voices and choirs, and not notice that very little is happening musically.

I will now turn in my film score fanclub I.D. card and membership kit.

Evanus got a reaction from MaxMovieMan in Michael Giacchino's JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION (2022)
I'm not entirely sure about all of them, but here's what I found:

    Main theme / co-existence
Theme that represents mankind and dinosaurs co-existing. Similar to Fallen Kingdom's main theme, but less ominous. Only used in the beginning and ending of the film, as far as I'm aware.

    Timestamps:

    Giganotosaurus theme
The first theme heard in the score, generally used for the Giganotosaurus. Can be heard almost every time it appears on screen.

    Timestamps:

    Giganotosaurus "clang"
Aggressive clang sound with some sort of echo effect, also used to signify the Giganotosaurus. Can be heard several times in the film and is used in the prologue as well.

    Timestamps:

    Biosyn theme
Adventerous theme for Biosyn, mostly used for Alan and Ellie traveling to Biosyn HQ.

    Timestamps:

Ellie Sattler / locust investigation theme (?)
I'm not entirely sure what this theme represents, but I think it's linked to Ellie and the locust investigation plot.

    Timestamps:

    Maisie / Charlotte Lockwood
A theme for Maisie and her past. Used prominently when she finds out about her “mother”, Charlotte.

    Timestamps:

    Kayla (?)
This seems to be a theme for Kayla, although I'm not sure. A Poignant melody, capturing the feeling of the story coming to an end. Appears a few times at the end of the film.

    Timestamps:

     Blue and Beta
Only appears once IIRC, but it's prominent enough to be considered a new theme I'd say. Sounds really cute!

    Timestamp:

And here’s a rough breakdown of the suite:
    (0:00 – 0:13) : Giganotosaurus
    (0:19 – 4:32) : Biosyn
    (4:38 – 6:05) : Ellie Sattler/Locust investigation
    (6:12 – 6:49) : Maisie / Charlotte Lockwood
    (6:50 – 7:40) : Kayla
    (7:42 – 8:30) : Jurassic World theme
    (8:31 – end) : Jurassic Park theme

There it is. I probably missed something, but these are all the themes I’ve heard so far.
