Knight of Ren reacted to The Illustrious Jerry in Ludwig Göransson's THE MANDALORIAN (2019-present)
    Hey folks!

I made a few updates to The Music of The Mandalorian back in July, including the addition of revised write-ups for Chapter 5 and Chapter 6. These entries are a continuation of the series of posts which began back in April, with similar reviews having already been added for Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3 and Chapter 4. In addition, the site hosts isolated score videos for notable sequences in Chapters 4, 8, 11 and 16. I hope to do more of these in the future. Of course, for anyone not yet familiar with the score, I recommend glancing through the thematic catalogue, which has been compiled for easy access by several fans of the score over the course of both seasons.

As for the remainder of the write-ups and timestamps, I do not expect to chip away at them significantly for some time, as there are still a lot of revisions to be made since they were originally posted nearly two years ago. Wow! Chapter 7 and Chapter 8 will likely take the most time, as my writing on Season 1's two-part finale was particularly extensive. Fortunately, reviews of the two volumes of music for Season 2 are more recent and will be posted promptly thereafter! The goal is to have these entries up in time for the release of The Book of Boba Fett in December. Also, there is what one could call a special feature in the works that I am very excited to share. More on that some other time though!

    Thanks for reading and cheers!

I just watched the first two episodes and I have to say that this really feels like a direct continuation of The Clone Wars, which I'm totally fine with.

The animation looks great, and the characters are starting to get more and more interesting, especially ones like Hunter and his relationship with Omega.

As for the score, Kiner further develops his style from that show, and so far I have catched a couple of references to previous themes, both by Kiner himself and by Williams.

So far so good, so I hope they keep this level.

Kudos for Yavar from bringing this up on FSM, but Bruce Botnick has revealed on the latest Goldsmith Odissey episode that he has just finished work on a Legacy expansion of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, clocking in over 160 minutes.

You can hear it at roughly the 8 minute mark:

    Hey folks!

I've made a few updates to The Music of The Mandalorian in the past few weeks, including the addition of revised write-ups for Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3 and Chapter 4. I have also made a few small discoveries regarding unreleased music in Season 2 (a recent rewatch of Chapter 9 indicates that there's way more missing music than I initially estimated), meaning that the post detailing the amount of music in each episode is in need of an update, which will happen once I've gone over all the chapters again. Don't forget about the isolated score videos and thematic catalogue, which have been up for a few months now!

I'm still reviewing the remainder of the write-ups and revising some timestamps, and while I didn't chip away as much as I thought I would over Easter, I'm sure the unfortunate circumstances in my province will keep me homebound for a good long while now, so this will be a good thing to fall back on when I have extra time on my hands.

Also, I was reading back on this thread and found a question I wasn't able to answer previously that I can now:

Most of the recaps are edits of tracked music with a few loose inserts (strings building up as the recap ends, etc). In some cases, however, there is between 30 seconds to a minute of music that isn't heard anywhere else. This includes the recorder in Chapter 2's recap, unique electronics in Chapter 4, some action-y synth in Chapter 5, and a hopeful string opening to Chapter 9's recap of Season 1, among others. I've added what each recap cue is comprised of to the write-ups.

Also, @CGCJ I recently noticed that your spreadsheet has a page marked "Series 1 (Unsorted)" that lists a Chapter 3 cue as Not Forgotten. I'm almost certain this is the missing music from when Mando spots Baby Yoda's favourite trinket on the dashboard, turns off the Crest's engines and decides to go back for him. The timing seems to line up as far as I can tell. It comes after Mando's Back (also unreleased) in sequence. Just wanted to double check as I had noticed this the last time I opened the spreadsheet to figure out which cue was which. Thanks for putting the document together- it's really helped me to stay organized!

Anyways, I'll post about any more updates here as they happen. If you're a fan of the show and score or know someone who is, you're welcome to take a look and spread the news to anyone who might be interested. Feedback is always welcome!

    Thanks and cheers!

Knight of Ren reacted to superultramegaa in Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross, Jon Batiste - SOUL (2020)
Well, decided to listen to this score after looking through this topic and seeing many here give praise to it. Jon Batiste should have done the whole score, without a doubt. I'm sure he could have made some heartwarming orchestral / jazz pieces that would have worked brilliantly. I'm in agreement with @TheUlyssesian that Thomas Newman has danced circles around the Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross score before it was even written (if you can call loading in a bunch of Logic instruments and playing basic harmonies and looping melodies written).

"Pursuit/Terry's World" is the only Reznor/Ross cue worth a damn. Where it mixes the Jazz style, and beautifully/seamlessly mixes it into a similar sounding synth piece. The rest is the same simplistic, pleasant, ambient piano and synth that people like Hans Zimmer or RCP composers in general, Thomas Newman, and various video game composers have done again, and again, and again, often doing it better.

It's not impressive, it's not revolutionary, it's not interesting to listen to, it's not special, it's typical. It's the new generic. The fact that these type of scores that work fine in the film get awards as often as they do, is a testament to how low people's standards for music have gotten. This is a score I and many other amateur composers could have written within a month at most, if I spent a day on each cue.

"Well it worked really well in the film." Sometimes silence works really well in films. Doesn't mean we should praise the music for not existing. A more melodic score for this movie probably would have worked as well, would have had more effort and skill put into it, and would've been a more rich listening experience in film and outside of the film. These 2 composers were chosen because they're associated with a lot of really good movies, and many audiences, critics, and directors follow a very simplistic logic for film music. If the movie sucks, the music sucks because it emphasized crap writing. If the movie is great, then the music was great and fit the film perfectly.

The first video with JNH's Kong theme makes me realize the huge difference there is between Junkie XL's score and what could have been done with a better composer (McCreary for example)

I'm not saying I don't like him, but his score for this movie was forgettable and didn't have any strong thematic ideas to support the action and the emotional scenes as well as it could have.

And why did he decided Ifukube's themes were too old fashioned but then went ahead and composed a theme that it's almost exactly like it, but with a few notes changed? McCreary's arrangement of the classic themes was done in such a way that they were fitting for the movie, even if its a "modern" movie.

I get that, and I don't like to waste my time on scores I don't like, so I do the same.

But how can you know if you like a score if you only listen to the first 20 seconds of one track? I think some scores need a couple of listens before you really start liking it.

I love The Fountain. It's the album I've listened to the most (by him) and I think it works perfectly in the film as well as an album experience.

I also like what he did in Black Swan and his arrangement of Tchaikovsky's ballet themes, and his score for one of Black Mirror's episodes, San Junipero, was quite nice.

You are right I have been sampling the album and there are indeed only 2 important themes - Sisu's and the emotional theme - let's call it the Trust theme as someone above called it.

Seems to be a slightly underpowered in terms of themes compared to say Fantastic Beasts but this is still a well done score.

I think Episode 8 has my favorite track from the whole series so far, Genesis.

It has both Wanda's Theme and the Love Theme developing in some really emotional and dramatic variations, and the second half has some killer action.

The Love Theme gets an official name in this episode, but I realized it had been introduced earlier in the show, like in the track Everything Under Control, from Episode 4 or halfway through Pietro in Episode 5. The tracks are not on YouTube so I cannot post the timestamps.

Some Assembly Required is also very emotional and has a great take on what I think is a theme for Vision himself, which also featured strongly in other tracks such as Dead or Alive, or Hexpansion.

And the track called Sokovia is really beautiful and the melody reminds me of something I cannot put my finger on. Maybe a theme from earlier episodes that I haven't been able to recognize?

About the last episode, I won't go into details, but it has some great statements of all the main themes that have been developed through the series, both in dramatic and action oriented cues.

I don't know why I couldn't find the score on YouTube but your link worked, so I will put some timestamps for the themes I mentioned.

    The Love Theme is this:

It appeared in Everything in Under Control in Episode 4, at 0:07:

And in Episode 5, in two tracks. Evaluation at 2:17

And with Pietro's return, at 1:36:

Vision Theme appears in Dead or Alive a couple of times (0:30, 1:01, etc.)

In Hexpansion (Episode 6) at 0:57

And in Episode 8, which does not appear for me in YouTube, you can listen to it a couple of times.

In Some Assembly Required at 0:21 and 1:05.

    And in Genesis at 1:17

    Hope that helps.

If anybody has any comments on Episode 9's score, can you put your entire post about in a spoiler block, as many of us won't see Episode 9 until later, but might want to discuss episode 8's new OST album now?  Thanks!

Episode 8's album is up on Spotify   https://open.spotify.com/album/5n0jcupsCMSOjt8K7vq555?si=Ic646tXnTkKWlXRAMAewhw

The opening "Salem" cue is pretty good scene-setting stuff!

But then "Witchnapped" is unfortunately 5 minutes of meandering underscore and nothing exciting at all.  Wasn't there a bunch of cool action music for the scene with Agatha defeating all the other witches?  Why is that not here????

"Sokovia" is a sad elegy, really nicely done.

"War Zone" is good dramatic suspense music with a bit of action, good stuff.  There's a nice hint of the Mind Stone motif from the next track, so I guess its more of a "magic powers" motif?  I'm guessing it plays when Agatha tells Wanda she was using magic without realizing it to prevent the bomb from going off

"The Mind Stone" features that cool motif that opens the end credits every week, and sounds great.  The whole track is nice.

"What Is Grief", well, the first half is completely boring.  The second half is really cool and harkens back to a lot of the real world underscore from prior episodes for the first time on this album

"Some Assembly Required" another good track, full of drama and heartbreak (I assume this is the music for Wanda looking at Vision's body be torn apart)

"Genesis" Easily one of the highlight tracks of the entire season.  Full of drama, terrific blending of themes.  Well done!

"Ready for Launch" I assume is the cue for the entire mid-credits scene.  It's fine.

"Wanda and Vision (Love Theme from WandaVision" is nice - is this a cue from the show given a funny name, or actually something recorded purely for album use?  It's pretty good

When Wanda is entering the memory of her and Vision at the Avengers compund, I think a dark slow variation of it plays briefly.

I may have misheard it but I think it was there, and it would make sense to be played when she mentions the Avengers.

Also, I found this video that makes a really interesting connection between all the theme songs and Beck's score, Wanda's Theme in particular. Really interesting.

    Hey folks!

I've spent the last few months updating my writing and getting to know the ins and outs of a basic website, and I'm now ready (and super excited ) to share the first few posts from The Music of The Mandalorian, a collection of write-ups on Goransson's score in standard blog format.

The first round of posts includes a (hopefully) comprehensive thematic catalogue, covering 44 different musical ideas, as well as the isolated score videos for Chapter 8, Chapter 11, and Chapter 16. There's still a lot of editing required before the timestamps and other write-ups are up to date, but I think this is a pretty good start.

Of course, I'm still getting accustomed to the technical aspect, which was hardly my forte to begin with. Fortunately, something like this doesn't entail too many complications! I'll post about any updates here as they happen. If you're a fan of the show and score (or know someone who is), feel free to take a look. Feedback is always welcome.
