So by my calculations, there's almost 45 minutes of unreleased music heard in the final film, though it's still unclear how much of that is old recordings tracked in...

    Here it is

I think out of any cue in the film that isn't on the OST, this is the one that most SHOULD HAVE BEEN.  It's not only the narrative and emotional climax of the movie, but the entire sequel trilogy, and the entire saga.  And it features a glorious new rendition and reworking of what has been used as the main title theme for all 9 episodes.  What was he thinking skipping over this one?

The music for that scene is on the FYC and the OST (it's in Seeing Sights FYC / The Force Is With You OST)

Here it is.  Amazing unreleased variations of Rey's Theme and Ren's Theme

Listened to all three sequel OSTs tonight; just finished. Pretty wild to go back to TFA and re-listen to the very first iterations of Rey and Kylo's themes, and then to hear how many times they are reprised in various interesting ways over the course of the trilogy.

I will also say that I love the three main concert arrangements of this trilogy (one per film): "Rey's Theme", "The Rebellion Is Reborn" and lastly "The Rise of Skywalker". These are some of the best themes he's written in recent memory, and the arrangements are all top-notch.

I wish JW would record a SW album now that he's finished with the saga. Use the Recording Arts Orchestra of Los Angeles (or the "Skywalker Symphony", or whatever) and just re-record a bunch of stuff, especially tracks he's never re-recorded before, like: "Duel of the Fates", "Battle of the Heroes", "Rey's Theme", "March of the Resistance", "The Jedi Steps", "The Rebellion Is Reborn", "The Rise of Skywalker" and of course the new arrangement of "Han Solo and the Princess", among others.

Well, there's close to half an hour of unreleased music just in the first half of the film

    He actually did.

All the characters start in TLJ where JJ left them, and throughout the film Rian takes them through an arc.

Finn: wakes up still being all about finding Rey and running away from the First Order, eventually becomes an actual Resistance member.

Poe: starts off as the gung-ho man of action he was in TFA, ends up knowing its important to know what the priorities are to keep The Resistance going.

Rey: starts out where she left off on TFA, literally. Tries the bring Luke back to Leia, but circumstances mean she has to come to terms with The Force and her link with Kylo Ren.

Kylo Ren: starts out as a ardent believer of Snoke, but finds through his connection with Rey that he is more.

The starting point of all characters is fine. People just didn't like where Rian took them.

    I did.

This is an incorrect way of thinking.
So instead of going forward where TLJ left off, Lucasfilm and JJ made the decision that they needed to steer it in another direction, the film obviously suffers from it, and it's still Rian Johnson's fault?

TLJ is still the film with the most character development for all the new characters. TROS does nothing with Finn and Poe in this regard.

    Nonsense.

JJ wasnt the original writer or director for Ep 9. It was his choice to take over after the original writer/director was sacked, and create a film that didnt follow through on where TLJ left the characters.

Again, blame JJ for this, not Rian Johnson. Who made a film which right now rates higher than TROS.

Well, I must say really did not like this movie. I liked TFA and loved TLJ, but this is one just has too much of everything. Too much plot, too little story. Too many planets. Too many short scenes. No sense of place. No atmosphere. No breathers.

I knew I was in trouble right after the opening crawl, with so much exposition being thrown at Kylo Ren.

Say what you will about TLJ, but there was a wonderful sense of place in that island. The scenes took their time. The cinematography was fantastic. There was a lot more impact in that Snoke throne room scene than in any Palpatine scene in this one, which always have that fake CGI sheen look to them. Even TFA achieved that very real sense of place in the early Jakku scenes. Not in this one. The movie just jumps around too much. Planets come and go without leaving any impression.

I'm surprised how great the score turned out, with a movie as scattered a fast cut as this one. There are literally 10 seconds scenes of exposition that interrupt the previous scene.

With the best Star Wars movies, you can summarize the plot in like a paragraph. 6 major things or so happen. And that's it.

This one is convoluted. It's just all over the place.

The complete score will this movie seem to be much better in my head. And a good score is the most important thing about a Star Wars film. Other than that, I'm bummed, I really wanted to like this.

    Sorry for the scattered thoughts

Well, we have put too much faith in New Zealand. It's not even always shown on world maps. Hardly a real, useful country, but rather more of a background to Peter Jackson's films.

I think Giacchino and Powell did commendable jobs; they both used Williams' material respectfully and with their own style. Rogue One isn't without it's handful of gems that Giacchino managed to work into the score - the imperial motif from ANH, the Battle of Hoth AT-AT references etc.

Powell's score is more enjoyable, though, if only because it feels like it's made whole by Williams being a part of it. Not to forget that the tone and subject of both films are different, with Solo being more adventurous and upbeat to Rogue One's dour nature.

    F.A.Q.:

    FYC? What's that stand for?

For Your Consideration.  Basically, Disney setup a website where eligible voters for the various awards that are given out around the end of the year could learn where they could attend a screening of their films, see which awards the films were pushing for, and listen to selections of the score for Best Score nominations.  For the films that had score selections, they are exactly what is heard in the film, and sometimes include music not on the commercial soundtrack albums!

So the music here is different than the album?

Yes!  Some tracks are almost the same, but the structure of the FYC program is fundamentally different; It is a selection of music from the movie exactly as it appears in the final cut of the film, even if the music used in the film was edited from Williams' original intentions.  This could mean that a track might contain an Insert Williams later wrote, where the OST presented his original version; or a track might contain less music than its OST counterpart of the scene was re-edited after the recording of the music, or even a track might contain some music artificially looped or stretched if a scene got lengthened after scoring.  The FYC always reflects these non-intended conforms to final picture from start to finish.

So does the FYC contain the complete score?

Certainly not.  The FYC is only 50 minutes long.

Which tracks contain music that is not on the OST album?

We won't know that until the OST album is available to hear.

Where can I find this FYC?

    https://disneystudiosawards.com/star-wars-score.html

    https://web.archive.org/web/20191210202934/https://disneystudiosawards.com/star-wars-score.html

I don't see a download link there; How do I download the files from Disney's site?

In case Disney ever takes the files down, they are archived permanently here:

The files on Disney's site have really low bitrate of 192kbps; Is there any chance its available uncompressed somewhere?

Disney should be mailing out pressed physical CDs with the FYC program to Academy music department voters sometime soon.  Usually not long after that, they begin turning up on ebay, and not long after that, lossless rips appear online.  NOTE: It is against the board's rules to ask for a lossless rip in the public forum.  Use the PM System or go to other websites for that discussion!  Posts asking for illegal downloads will be deleted!

As Spencer was no longer around. His style was "dryer" than Conrad Pope etc where the orchestrational feel is much more "glossy" and thick now. I guess like any composer Williams style just changed. Much like Goldsmith's more sleek and streamlined style of the 90s.
Dear all. We all love Williams which is the bottom line. The prequel scores were blazing genius compared to most of what was being written by other composers in the 90s. I guess I was just comparing them to the OT scores which were orchestrated in a different way.
As far as fees were concerned film work is easily the most lucrative for a choral singer. It is very closely jealously guarded work. Remember this was £225 for 3 hours 20 years ago which included the buyout. God knows what they are being paid now.
I can tell you there was no choral music at the moment you described which was unfortunately replaced with the Imperial March. I just sat there dazzled with those gigantic unearthly chords blasting from the LSO which I described at the time as a "massive orchestral blowout" or something. This was the apex of the entire score as far as I'm concerned and it was cut! The full sequence isn't even available anywhere. Maybe one day we will see this box set of all nine scores we so desparately want. I would also love a complete release of the excellent Rogue One score by Giacchino and the material Powell wrote for the terrible Solo movie. Will this ever happen do you think?

I really love Marty O'Donnell's Halo and Destiny music. It's a shame that he was fired from Bungie. Here's musical prequel to first Destiny:

Here's some brief thoughts on the 30 second samples

    1. Far From Home Suite Home (8:27) They went with the main theme from the beginning of the suite for the sample
    2. It’s Perfect (0:30) Peter/MJ love theme
    3. World’s Worst Water Feature (7:30) 1st act action music sound
    4. Multiple Realities (3:32) Nice blend of orchestra and electronics
    5. Brad to the Drone (3:32) rhythmic, pulsing music
    6. Change of Plans (2:28) sort of ethereal stuff
    7. Night Monkey Knows How to Do It (0:19) Awesome guitar-backed version of the main theme!
    8. Mr. One Hundred and One (3:20) action extravaganza!  includes the electronics-backed Mysterio theme like in the Suite
    9. Prague Rocked (3:43) more action material, very much in the same vein as the previous track
    10. Who’s Behind Those Foster Grants (2:57) not much going on in this sample
    11. Power to the People (3:33) more guitar, this time for the Mysterio theme, the string bit after is nice
    12. Personal Hijinks (3:53) Peter/MJ love theme, this time with piano
    13. Praguenosis: BAD (1:08) Here's where Mysterio's theme turns evil sounding, backed by guitar briefly
    14. A Lot of ‘Splaining to Do (2:14) Nick Fury theme backed by electronics!
    15. The Magical Mysterio Tour (3:21) Twisting and whirling passage, sounds like something freaky's going on!
    16. Taking the Gullible Express/ Spidey Sensitive (5:07) not much to say about this one
    17. Gloom and Doom (4:16) Getting ready for the climax type music
    18. High and Flighty (2:20) Mysterio material baked with cool percussion
    19. An Internal Battle (1:50) Continues with a similar sound, fun horn versions of the main theme
    20. Happy Landings (2:58) Sounds like a cue out of Pacific Rim at first, sample is just part of a building up section
    21. Tower of Cower (5:12) awesome action music!
    22. Bridging the Trap (1:58) some sad denouement music with an action stinger
    23. Bridge and Love’s Burning (2:50) Peter/MJ love theme
    24. Swinging Set (1:47) Super electronic-y, reminds me a bit of Tomorrowland, and something else I can't put my finger on
    25. And Now This… (0:58) Mysterio Theme
