John got a reaction from Naïve Old Fart in What Is The Last Film You Watched? (Older Films)
I personally don't mind the Ewoks much. I think they add to the nostalgic, if at times hokey, charm of the original trilogy.

Here's the recording session cue list for anyone interested. I have the official cue names for all of the cues, but some of the tags (e.g. '1m1') are missing, so I had to guess where some of them go. Source cues are included.

John reacted to Tom in Are you a member of the Church of The Lost World yet?
As in me? Nothing out of the ordinary: ESB.
However, if you are looking for something out of the ordinary, at the moment I would put the concert suite from BFG on a short list of my favorite standalone pieces Williams has ever composed.
As for TLW, the raw, primal energy of the soundtrack is unmatched in Williams' oeuvre, though I would not put the work near the top.

John reacted to Incanus in What would you sacrifice for a complete set of every John Williams recording sessions?
If you can't sacrifice the thing dearest to you for John Williams' complete recording sessions, how dare you call yourself a fan?

John reacted to Sergeant in Are you a member of the Church of The Lost World yet?
Yes, the energy of Temple of Doom but not the magic of it!!

Oh, yeah. Oooh, ahhh, that's how it always starts. Then later there's running and um, screaming.

John reacted to Disco Stu in What Is The Last Score You Listened To? (older scores)
La La Land - Justin Hurwitz
Still in my regular rotation, still as brilliant as when I first heard it, and still mostly underrated by the film score enthusiast community. Hurwitz is an incredibly talented melodicist, an ability sadly lacking in most film composers today. I really just hope he starts scoring films for directors other than Chazelle, I want to hear him take on other challenges!

Oh great and mighty John Williams take this offering, my firstborn son! I give so I might receive! Recording sessions, complete, every take, all! Hallowed be thy scores, complete and chronological! Forever and ever.

John reacted to Nick1Ø66 in Star Trek Discovery
CBS (and Paramount) simply have no idea how to handles this franchise. They screwed up the 50th anniversary, they screwed up the last film, and now they're screwing this up. It just looks terrible.
And what is it with the "Before Kirk and Spock" stuff in that trailer....as if the idea is something bold and new. Ugh. There's nothing bold and new about looking back...looking back in the timeline of the franchise, and looking back in that they've done this before with Enterprise. Star Trek is supposed to be about the future. I can only assume they wanted to make it as close in time to JJ's movies as they could, and some studio execs probably thought no one would want to watch if they couldn't cameo some classic Trek characters in it. So we get something that's a bad clone of those movies that were simply average to begin with, themselves a clone of something far superior.
Zero boldness, zero creativity. Yeah, I know it's just a trailer, but the troubled production history of this thing doesn't give me any confidence either.

This is the kind of thread that leads certain circles to refer to JWFan as disturbing.

I'd burn all my Giacchino soundtracks in a pagan ritual!

As much of a basic, by the beats re-do of HA1 is, HA2 is quite charming and hilarious.

This film is supposedly the last in the series. I'd be surprised if they don't make one more and have two trilogies.

John reacted to Nick1Ø66 in .
I like Pirates of the Caribbean. It doesn't make too many demands of the middle-class attention span. They can enjoy exactly what they expect in a safe, non-challenging environment.
For example, how many films tell you exactly what they're going to be about in the title? You can't tell anything about "Silence" based solely on the title. Go see it without knowing what it's about and you may be confused. Indeed, there's a lot of talking in that film. Not so with Pirates of the Caribbean. No speculation necessary.
There will be Pirates. They will be in the Caribbean. No surprises, everyone's happy. Watch the film, eat your popcorn, and your mind remains uncluttered for a post movie trip to the Gap.

I was too busy seething at BD Wong, for ripping-off JW's turtleneck.

John reacted to Jim Ware in Instrument in "Minas Morgul"?
I believe so. The instrument was almost always recorded separately due to it's generally obnoxious volume and unpredictable nature (top tip - don't be in the same room as someone playing one).
A Spell of Concealment does indeed include a rhaita.
-
John reacted to Gnome in Plaid in Instrument in "Minas Morgul"?
Rhaita (a Moroccan shawm, largely the same instrument as the Egyptian mizmar and the lower-pitched versions of the Armenian zurna). It's used in unison with muted trumpet(s?) in most prominent statements of Sauron's Theme in the first two scores ("Keep It Secret, Keep It Safe," "The Great Eye, "The Three Hunters," "The Heir of Numenor"). Its appearances in ROTK stand out more because of some changes in orchestration - in "The Palantir," it's a beat (two beats?) behind the brass, and serves almost as an echo. I think the particularly nasal sound of "Minas Morgul" comes from adding Western oboes to the melody, but I'm not quite as sure on that. Then, the rhaita is especially prominent in "Grond" because of the octave separation between it and the low brass.
Shore's used it on at least four other scores I can think of (Naked Lunch, The Cell, and the first two Hobbit scores), although the first two are within a more standard context for the instrument. Mychael Danna also used the very similar zurna to great effect in Ararat.
