It's just so hard not to have a smile on your face listening to this. Even the weirder, non-Williamsy stuff is fun and unique in its own way (with plenty of flute flourishes and exotic orchestration that would make Williams proud for the sheer experimentation).

Certainly better than grimacing throughout the listen, at moments like this:

Amazing how amateurish everything sounds in that score now, right after listening to Powell's SW music.

It sounds so much better then Giacchino's Rogue One, which I did enjoy. Not only are the orchestrations so much richer, but the melody and hook is a lot better, that it makes Giacchino's work, seem like amateur cartoon music in comparison.

Its a movie I don't need (in terms of the franchise), its a production that hasn't been reassuring for me as an audience member, and I'm not enamored with the premise (Join Han Solo on an unspecified adventure) or the genre (heist film).

I'm not going to see it.

You're going to see it, and you're going to like it, if it's the last thing you do. God help us all!

  3. My thoughts.

Wyatt Earp - It's fine. Great score and production design, plus a superb cast, but a little too long, and kinda aimless.

I haven't seen Paper Towns, not really my kind of film honestly.

Carrie - Not a fan. Failed to capture what made the 1976 version work so well. Performances aren't bad, but as far as remakes / readaptations of old Stephen King novels, I didn't much care for it.

Mean Girl - Classic. One of the movies that probably defined the mid 2000's for a lot of teens / young adults. Sharp script, and performances (Rachel McAdams being a particular standout), plus it features Lohan before she went crazy. I've seen it several times, and I still highly recommend it. It's endlessly quotable and hilarious.

Fernando Velazquez is one of my favorite composers. His Zipi & Zape scores are fantastic! And I also love Crimson Peak.

Anyway, leading up to Solo I'm listening to several John Powell scores and I'm discovering really great stuff.

Pan: I would say this is almost a perfect score, with a great album presentation that only would need some tracks to be deleted (apart from the songs, obviously) and would be perfect. Is a great theme-filled score with some truly beautiful moments (Origins Story or Transfiguration for example) and some action cues that are part of the very best of Powell (like Kidnapped/Dog Fight or Flying Ship Fight)

Shrek: Powell collaborated in this one with Harry Gregson-Williams and it's a nice score. I love both main themes a lot, especially the apparitions of Fiona's theme in Fairytale and Transformation/The End, and the big heroic rendition of Shrek's theme in Ride The Dragon is also really great. My issue with this score is that maybe there is a bit too much of the usual mickey-mousing of this scores, which fits within the movie, but it's not really interesting out of it.

BTW, what are some other great Powell scores? I haven't heard all of his scores and I'm wondering what do you think are his bests.

Aside from all his other animated scores, Paycheck, and Evolution are two that I regular listen to, and can highly recommend. Both scores are a lot of fun.

  5. :( My favorite live-action Lois Lane. She got the characters feisty and fun personality down really well.

Her battle with mental illness and subsequent charity work should also be noted, and I also thought she was great in DePalma's Sisters, a solid Hitchcockian thriller, with a great Herrmann score. RIP!!!

  6. I only started exploring Rubinstein's work a year ago. He only did a few major films, but he definitely left an impression on the movies of his that I've seen. He actually colloborated with John Badham on several films, nine in total. War Games and Blue Thunder are great, but i quite enjoyed his music from The Stakeout films, but could never them anywhere, outside of a hard to find composer promo thing he did. Thankfully somebody did upload a suite from the score, six days ago. RIP!!!

Well, he did used some pre-exisiting material in Ready Player One this year, right?

    Karol

True. I think that had to do the source material, and the fact that a lot of the music he was quoting (King Kong, Godzilla etc...), is generally associated with those characters, much less so in the case of Infinity War.
