You know what? As much as I'd like to hear some of those references myself, we have to remember that one of the primary functions of film scores is to bind the narrative together. This film has got so many characters and story threads that overloading it with Easter eggs and other composer's material would have weakened the storytelling.  A singular mind behind the score helps to offset the apparent chaos of what's happening of screen. That is what a good film composer would be focused on more, I think. Plus if you're hiring Alan Silvestri you probably expect Alan Silvestri. Elfman tried to infuse his Justice League with a lot of stuff and create a score "for everyone". And look what happened there.

I actually liked that every hero had their own theme / motif in Justice League. My biggest issue with that score, was that most of the new themes I didn't find to be especially memorable.

In the case of Infinity War, while I can understand the lack of old themes, especially given the films overall tone, and the fact that Silvestri apparently doesn't seem to be much of a fan of using material that isn't his, I'm a person who prefers recurring themes. It just seems like a major missed musical opportunity to me, anyway.

The Russos were the best thing to happen to marvel. Silvestri didn’t use any other composer’s themes in his first Avengers score so that seems to be his thing.

I thought all Captain America scores were interesting, but different from each other.

Silvestri apparently used Black Panther's theme, though I could not really tell what track it was in the soundtrack.

I'm not sure if it's Silvestri, or the studios but either way, the lack of apparent "continuity" in this score really bugs me. It would have been nice to hear Strange's theme or Tyler Iron Man's theme anytime those characters were involved in the action, instead of just variations on The Avengers theme. I enjoyed the score otherwise, though. The epic track "Even For You" being a particular highlight.

  3. The action was pretty excellent, especially for a Marvel film, The last battle on Titan against Thanos being a particular highlight.

My entire theater sat through the credits too. It was funny though, as soon as the credits started rolling, a employee working in the theater came in told and us that after the emotional ending we just watched, that we shouldn't spoil it for people. It's not everyday you see that see / hear that sort of thing in the cinema. It was just that "big".

I liked it a lot too!  I have the same complaint though; The leads . Specifically that they had no chemistry together, and DeHaan was just kind of bad overall.  He was playing the character the opposite of the way he was written, I dunno why Besson didn't have him change his performance!  Delivigne was fine, I thought

DeHaan is miscast in a lot of the roles I've seen him in. He doesn't work as well as a "heroic lead". He should stick to more supporting roles / smaller films.

  5. Valerian and The City of a Thousand Planets - Enjoyed this a lot more then I expected to. It's really creative, and I like the worlds it builds, and there are even some legit funny moments, plus Desplat score is great, and works wonders in the film. Unfortunately the leads chemistry is not particularly good, and it takes the film down a notch or two for me. DeHaan in particular was quite poor, while Delevingne was alright, but still a bit stiff, though I suppose it could be worse. Not bad, but then again I tend to enjoy sci-fi fantasy adventure box office bombs, usually anyway. 6.5 / 10

  6. You know I'd take every "rumor" with a grain of salt.

Hmm. Interesting, but not a record. Wasn't ST:TMP scored, just six days before its premiere?

I didn't know that Howard shot 80% of it.

$150,000,000 domestic, on its opening w/e? Don't think so.

Clint Howard has appeared in every Ron Howard film, I think.

Well almost everything. He wasn't in any of the Langdon films, or Willow among others. I'm quite glad he has a role in Solo, though.

I will never, never hate on a film if all that's wrong with it is just production value.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull has plenty of narrative issues, along with production woes and is just an unnecesary movie.

I don't usually mind plot problems as much. I just enjoyed KOTCS for what it was.
