Absolutely terrible news, but he did look almost unrecognizably bad in the recent photos I'd seen.

Ian Holm was my third favourite actor of all time (after Jack Nicholson and Anthony Hopkins). Ash was the one that started it all, but I've loved basically everything I've seen him in.

For over 30 years of the 88 that you have been around, I have have been enthralled by your music. I have listened to it for countless hours. I have formed many friendships because of it, and it has impacted my life in ways that are simply undeniable.

    Hello,

Some of you are already aware of this, but I want to spread the news to every JWFan here:

After a few months working on it on and off, I'm now ready to launch this side project of mine which I hope will encounter interest among fellow John Williams admirers. It's time for me to give back the immense amount of gratitude I have toward this great composer. It's a blog called "The Legacy of John Williams":

    https://thelegacyofjohnwilliams.com/

The purpose is to build a platform to collect and gather material from people around the world who were inspired by the music of John Williams--mostly musicians, composers, conductors, but also filmmakers, film professionals, historians, music critics and scholars. I want to give space also to admirers who have interesting stories and perspectives to tell and share. The goal is to celebrate the rich musical legacy John Williams is giving and leaving to our lives, for centuries to come.

There is a larger and much more ambitious goal at the core of this project, but it’s too soon to speak about it. If this blog will get momentum and will become the platform I hope will be in the foreseeable future, everything will be addressed. As you can see, it's still work-in-progress, but from now on I plan to build and update it regularly, so be patient, I promise it will be worth your time. Taking a cue from the Maestro's writing process, I see this project as a living thing that can be improved and changed over the course of time.

Today I published the first piece of content, an exclusive interview with pianist Gloria Cheng about the Montage recording/documentary:
    https://thelegacyofjohnwilliams.com/2018/09/27/conversation-with-pianist-gloria-cheng/

I've also set up Facebook and Twitter pages, so I hope you will like/follow:
    https://www.facebook.com/thelegacyofjohnwilliams
    https://twitter.com/TheLegacyofJW

Of course feedback from anyone is greatly appreciated.

    Thank you for listening!

Haha I was struck by that too! (I was like...have I been pronouncing the film title wrong all these years? I've certainly heard the word as a verb pronounced the way he does, i.e. "I don't recall" but I don't recall hearing the NOUN version of it pronounced that way in any context before, if that makes sense...)

I really enjoyed this conversation, and I think it's nice to offer folks an Odyssey episode that's only an hour and a half long, after that epic interview most recently!

Thanks to FSM reader George Gallant for sharing this rare TV episode with us and my friend Brad Wills for helping re-create the GE Theater logo in high quality. And of course, W. David Lichty (aka Lorien) for his expert editing. This is a really good podcast, with our conversation at the end being one of my very favorites. @karelm @Fancyarcher @Brundlefly @Display Name @TownerFan @Disco Stu @Mr. Breathmask @Faleel J.M. @El Jefe @Modest Expectations @Laserschwert @publicist @BrotherSound @Modest Expectations @Jay @Stefancos @Jurassic Shark let me know what you think!

The first Odyssey Interview of 2020 is here, and I would like to offer special thanks to guest editor Wes Deckers, who last year offered to help us out should we ever have a scheduling crunch...and he really came through with some fine work, here!

Join me for the first half of my conversation with Iranian film music scholar Nasrollah Davoodi, who gave a Jerry Goldsmith lecture in Tehran early last year... we cover a host of fascinating subjects:
    http://goldsmithodyssey.buzzsprout.com/159614/2873533-odyssey-interviews-nasrollah-davoodi-part-1

And there will be even more to look forward to in Part 2 later this month, which will contain an examination of Jerry's work venturing into the "middle eastern" sound, as well as a crash course (with samples) in original Iranian film music, focusing on the eight most important Iranian film composers of the 20th century.

    Hope you enjoy the conversation and let me know what you think, @karelm @Fancyarcher @Brundlefly @Display Name @TownerFan @Disco Stu @Mr. Breathmask @Faleel J.M. @El Jefe @Modest Expectations @Laserschwert @publicist @BrotherSound @Modest Expectations @Jay @Stefancos @Jurassic Shark!

Fancyarcher reacted to Loert in I can't believe it's not John Williams! (the best imitators)
My favourite imitation was done by Clint Bajakian for the video game Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb. Not only did he convincingly imitate JW's various stylisms but he also managed to capture the playfulness of Indiana Jones music in particular.

    Some examples:

This imitates JW's "Nazi" style to a tee (brass in octaves, snare drum etc.)

(SHAMELESS PLUG ALERT) I have tried to imitate JW in the past, mostly unsuccessfully, but I think my most successful attempt was with this Prequel-style action track:

I respect all three of them. They are essentially the pioneers of on-line film music reviews (along with Tracksounds, Soundtrack Express, MainTitles (aka Scorereviews), Cinemusic, & Music From The Movies). I've sure many of us owe a debt a gratitude to at least one of them back in the infancy of the web that made us feel like we film music lovers weren't alone in the world.

Currently, I value Jon and James' reviews the most but I never miss a CC review because his site was the first I came across when looking for other film music folks on the internet back in my second year of college.

I'm happy to see these veteran journalists still going strong and I hope they keep going for many years to come!

There is still a place in the world for film music reviews.

Moviemusik is the most active and I like it. Lots of classic scores reviewed. And most of newer ones too. I found the analysis a bit thin but generally decent.

Movie-Wave is good but most of the reviews are very short and not very detailed. A bit superficial but still dedicated.

Filmtracks is the best of course. Very detailed lengthy essays on several aspects of major scores. But now posts reviews only sporadically. And I agree with the assessment above - CC is extraordinarily biased. But reading a review is akin to reading the Opinion section of a newspaper. You don't come for objectivity, you are coming for somebody's opinion.

Very sad 😞 I was at the rehearsals of Dear Basketball and he was so excited and a huge fan of JW giving him a hug and telling the orchestra how thrilling an experience it was for him to stand in front of such great musicians.  He let everyone who wanted take a selfie but it was clear he was giddy with joy at the experience.  I think he said it was his first time in front of an orchestra.  RIP.

Here he is at the Star Wars session with the trumpet section.  He was a big time JW fan.
