John Williams & the Vienna Philharmonic: January 18/19 2020
Pawel P. replied to Ricard's topic in JOHN WILLIAMS
Thank you Martinland! It was my first CD, bought in 1996 - previously I had a few Williams' soundtracks on cassettes As for the meeting, as I use the hospitality of my cousin and his family, I don't plan any meetings after the concerts - it wouldn't be too elegant on my part to leave them like that on Saturday. And on Sunday I'm leaving Vienna very soon after the concert. Although I'm sure JWFan Vienna meeting will be wonderful! I wish you and everyone present the most beautiful concert in your life! Anne-Sophie confirmed in interview two months ago that the concerts will also be filmed. I hope it wasn't her wishful thinking and she knew what she was saying. Yes, I will be his guest artist. That’s so amazing, isn’t it? I mean, this is John Williams’ European debut! Other than in London, he has never conducted in the Old World. Everything will be filmed and recorded, it’s going to be spectacular. . -
John Williams & the Vienna Philharmonic: January 18/19 2020
Pawel P. replied to Ricard's topic in JOHN WILLIAMS
I had a dream last night in which I saw John Williams in a photo shoot with… Riccardo Muti under the window of my old apartment. I thought that I had to get down quickly, because such an opportunity to meet my idol won’t happen again. I don't remember any more, I just woke up. You can imagine my surprise when I looked here in the morning and saw these pictures. It's a totally surreal situation - in a few days I'll be at two John Williams' concerts, with one of the world's best orchestras performing his compositions. If it's really filmed, it’ll be a souvenir for life. It’s very cool to see Maestro in great form! -
2020 Oscars - Best Original Score predictions
Pawel P. replied to TownerFan's topic in General Discussion
I think we should all remember one thing: nomination is also a kind of award. For many filmakres it's the biggest achievement of their entire career. That's why it's no longer said that "the winner is", but "Oscar goes to". And that's why 51, the number of Williams' nominations so far, is so important. I hope it will be 52 next week. -
The Rise of Skywalker The Rise of Skywalker OST Album Discussion
Pawel P. replied to Jay's topic in JOHN WILLIAMS
Is mixed very well. But I watched it in IMAX. I don't know yet how it will sound in normal cinemas. -
So, after the press screening, I can tell you that the score is really, really good, really crushing. This movie really owns it a lot. I haven't heard FYC material, but especailly two new themes are very epic and have a very prominent place in the score. One is majestic, both are super catchy and memorable. An instant classics for me. I have the impression that this is the most aggressive score of the new trilogy, and at the same time the most lyrical and nostalgic. Of course, old themes are back - Force, Vader, Palaptine, Leia, Han Solo and the Pricnes, Yoda, Rey, Resistance. End Credits is a mix of old themes and new ones. I didn't notice Dule of the Fates, but there is a powerful choir that sounds quite similar to it. There are more choirs, at the beginning and especially in the last act of the film. One of them reminded me of Anakin's Betrayal from ROTS. The movie ends, for the fourth time in a row, with Binnary Sunset. In two places, if I remember correctly, Williams almost copied fragments from ROTJ (Darth Vader's death) and ESB (Dagobah). But it sounds spectacular. To sum up, there is a lot going on here. I can't wait to hear it on CD. And of course a few more times at the cinema. Of course, don't take my words for granted. I really like scores from both TFA and TLJ.

So I'm after the press screening. I liked the movie very much, although there will certainly be many who will not be satisfied. As usual. I have to gather my thoughts to write a spoiler free review for my web portal - for now, until tomorrow morning, there is an embargo from Disney. One thing I'll tell you: John Williams has a cameo! He played a bartender by the name, if I remembered correctly from the end credits, Oma Trek. How cool is that? EDIT - Oma Tres

The Rise of Skywalker The Rise of Skywalker - Disney Records OST
Pawel P. replied to Jay's topic in JOHN WILLIAMS
Okay, I'm watching the movie in 9 hours. This is a special moment. The end of the saga, perhaps the last of John Williams' great epic scores. I haven't listened to FYC because I think it's worth being patient. I think I'll write here about my feelings about the music in the movie after the screening. -

Agree. 'Sleepers' is even greater, IMHO. But such a program would be suicide -

What I particularly like about this program is the fact that none of the themes from 'A John Williams Celebration' blu-ray are repeated. And this will be filmed and probably also released on blu-ray. Thanks to this, we may get another unique concert for souvenir. But of course Williams could just conduct two 50-minutes long suites from 'Images' and 'Sleepers', with an encore from 'Presumed Innocent', and I would be happy anyway. -
ACROSS THE STARS - Williams / Mutter collaboration album
Pawel P. replied to WilliamsStarShip2282's topic in JOHN WILLIAMS
I'm sure if Pope arranged anything on this album, it's related to the orchestra, not the violin parts. And he certainly followed Williams' instructions. -

Thanks. This is the most insightful and deep interview with Williams I've read in years.

ACROSS THE STARS - Williams / Mutter collaboration album
Pawel P. replied to WilliamsStarShip2282's topic in JOHN WILLIAMS
The arrangement is the same, the differences are very subtle. Besides, Mutter's style of playing is slightly different than Perlman's. When I listen to this CD, I can easily imagine how much fun Williams had when he was creating these arrangements. He didn't want to beat the originals, this isn't what this album is about. It's about great art, friendship and time spent together. It's about enjoying music that is able to cross all boundaries. -
ACROSS THE STARS - Williams / Mutter collaboration album
Pawel P. replied to WilliamsStarShip2282's topic in JOHN WILLIAMS
I've had this beautiful gem for a few days and I can say that the album is, as expected, phenomenal. I’ll write more in a large article that I’m going to publish before the premiere. Several pieces, like Hedwig’s Theme, Donnybrook Fair and The Duel are very vibrant and virtuoso. Hedwig’s Theme in the extended version is a revelation. Dracula sounds phenomenal and dark. Luke and Leia is beautiful, just like Across The Stars. Sabrina is quite similar to the version that appeared on Cinema Serenade, Schindler's List doesn't differ much from the original either. I am looking forward to the deluxe version, but even this one is definitely one of the record events of the year. I'm telling you, this ends with at least one Grammy Award Below are some photos. The booklet has 24 pages. Liner notes are in English and German. There is also short essay by Jon Burlingame, but I don't want to spoil everything here What can I say more... Well, it's 'Nice to be around' this CD
