Chen G. reacted to Not Mr. Big in Name Film Scores that are often considered “GREAT” but you just don’t like?
Lawrence of Arabia. I don't really care for the main theme and most of the score is just renditions of it.

Chen G. got a reaction from JTWfan77 in "House of the Dragon" vs. "The Rings of Power"
Yeah, I never became involved with the characters in Game of Thrones. Not that I need very black-and-white stories: I love complex characters! But there's a way to do complex characters without being chavalier towards evil. Game of Thrones doesn't do that: Game of Thrones believes that, you know what, the heinous things these characters do aren't soooo bad.
Not for me.

This including the music is what prevents for me the Star Wars live action TV shows from working. Same issue.

I swear at one point the average viewer just watched that show to see who would die next. It's like what's the point.

I believe at this point Shore is still just a rumor and not officially confirmed.... and even if he was confirmed to have been working on it months ago, we don't know if they decided to go another way for the final show eventually after hearing what he came up with
Hopefully we find out more soon...

If they can get the whole thing down to a tight 10 minutes, I’m in.

Could it have been a two-hour-ish movie? Probably, yeah. But, in the event, its a 220-minute miniseries.
Either watch it - as is - or don't. This tendency to fan-cut everything is... I mean, I guess it gives people a stint at being a film editor, but otherwise I don't think its a very positive trend in how we appreciate movies and shows.
It kinda drives us towards a minimalist view of editing, whereby movies must be the fastest, shortest versions of themselves possible. I find that approach very reductive - it becomes a dragster car rather than a work of art.

Chen G. reacted to Nick1Ø66 in The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings of Power (2022 TV Series)
Yeah, I've seen this quote, but to be honest, I don't see a lot of Legend in LOTR, at least visually. Braveheart, definitely, the inspiration there is clear. I think Jackson was speaking more metaphorically when it comes to Legend, i.e. he was just using Legend as an example of having fantasy elements in a film otherwise grounded in history.
Fellowship, The Two Towers and early seasons of Game of Thrones got this balance about perfectly in my opinion.

I guess some people define that term differently. For me, mythology is fictionalized prehistory and therefore, being mythological, it should feel very matter-of-fact like a historical movie, rather than being self-consciously fantastical or surreal or what have you.
Clearly its a balance. These films aren't trying to totally historicize the fantasy and obviously their imaginativeness is a big part of their appeal. Jackson had a kind of barometer for it: "Braveheart meets Legend" and, like him, I prefer erring hard on the Braveheart side; and boy did anything ever feel more Legend than those Harfoots?

This. You can't overstate how important this was to the success of Jackson's LOTR (not to mention GOT).

He'd make an outstanding Dwarf.

Great Nick, now you've just reminded me that I want David O'Hara to get a role in a Middle Earth production...

They could at least use some of the actual music.

Well, it "helps" that The Rise of Skywalker sucked ass...
I mean, if I told you in 2016 that the third film in the trilogy would be outgrossed by an R-rated, non-action, bleak-as-hell remake of Taxi Driver, would you believe me?

I confess I'd be more interested if James Horner was still alive to score the movie.

The answer to that question is that they ARE comparably cheap. They’re incredibly expensive for TV productions, but reportedly $100-150 million per 5-7 hour seasons. Comparatively, the TROS budget was $275 million for a 2 hour movie.

Finn not showing remorse for killing his former-friends is disappointing, however in pretty much every situation it's a case of self-defense. The stormtroopers being faceless bad guys that the heroes murder with no remorse is inherited from the Original Trilogy, it just seems particularly noticeable in The Force Awakens because they went to the effort of humanizing a Stormtrooper
That last sentence also applies to the Original Trilogy 100%

It's a really dumb way, forcing the name to be interpreted in the english/latin way. And the scene's symptomatic of the movie just having to take every one of his character traits and tools and make him acquire them in these few scenes.

Chen G. got a reaction from Marian Schedenig in What is the last piece of classical music you listened to?
They are, and yet there were still notable exceptions that are rarely matched today: Dame Gwyneth Jones comes to mind as someone of the older generation who's an absolutely superb actress; we've scarcely seen her like since then
