crlbrg reacted to JohnnyD in THE BFG COMPLETE SCORE Discussion (Spoilers Allowed) - includes Chronological Order of OST
I recently saw The BFG again. This was a great film, and of course John Williams’ score is phenomenal. I am not sure if I mentioned this, but I love how the Maestro portrays the whirling dreams with flittering flutes. I could mention all the other highlights, but I don’t have the time to detail the nearly two hours worth of music.

His agility reminds a lot of my great grandma when I was a child. Back then she was also in her 80's.
She's 20 years older than Williams, though (born in 1912), and still around today.

Alright, here's the deal.
I've been in contact with the Charleston Stage (previously The Young Charleston Theater Company), and it is through their libraries that we've been able to find a recording. Now before you get your hopes up, you need to know a few things:
The original performance was by the Charleston Symphony, and to their knowledge, no recording was made of this event (neither audio nor video). Unfortunately. Williams had intended to conduct himself, but had to decline because he was apparently ill in 1988 (what illness I do not know). But it's still pretty generous of him to write a fanfare based only on a letter from the founder of the group.
However, a studio recording of the piece was made which strips the piece down to a brass section of moderate size, some percussion and augmented by the type of chimes (electronic?) you hear in HOME ALONE. This is all that exists, I'm afraid, untill someone records it again. The sound quality is also a bit 'muffled'. Still, it's better than the piano reduction from the guy on Youtube that we've all had to suffice with for some years now.
I will not be able to put up a public link here for various reasons, but for those who are interested, you can send me a PM.

Ladies and gentlemen, I have another surprise for you!
I've been able to locate a recording of this fanfare. This will prove extremely valuable in my JW research.
Hang tight. I'll update with more info.

At that age breathing must be a chore, let alone conducting. Amazing!

John Williams' biggest problems actually is Guitar Williams.

Both are absolutely stunning, great work!
I really wish these had been recorded/included in the set, they're fascinating listens (and a real insight into the evolution & refinement of Williams' writing on the score).

I have a rather different view, as there are so many things in one's personal life (or just 'life') that ultimately inform and influence the artistic process in various ways.

crlbrg reacted to filmmusic in Upcoming film music book including chapter on John Williams
Dear members,
I've not logged in for quite some time due to some problems, but I thought to post this here now.
This is an upcoming book on film music (in English and due to publication in December according to amazon) with chapters on various film composers including one on John Williams:
http://www.palgrave.com/gp/book/9781137573742#aboutBook
The chapter is co-written by Emilio Audissino, who I'm sure you know from his excellent book on John Williams (and is a member here too), and myself.
Emilio's part copes with the historical side and importance of Williams' film music.
My contribution to the chapter is strictly musicological. I'm examining the musical syntax of Williams' themes based on Caplin’s academically acclaimed study of classical theme-types, along with more contemporary theorists’ views of some sentential types.
Six notated musical examples are included representing five different types that are most prevalent on Williams' thematic output, and also a statistical table with the percentages of these types in my analysis of 341 themes.
This part of the chapter is really an abridgement of a much longer chapter from my upcoming musicological dissertation on John Williams.
I would like to thank Emilio very much, since he was the one that thought of me and suggested to the editors that we should co-write the chapter.
This represents my first academic publication so it was really important for me and I'm very happy about it!
