I would at least confirm, it is a better LOTR score than the recent Star Wars scores are Star Wars scores.
From the sound perspective I think, I am basically ok with the Andor score at the first episode. Big weakness is in my eyes the thematic material. Typical modern film score. Sound, chords, percussion and no melody worth mentioning.

The new Amazon Prime LOTR score is a better SW score than any of the recent D+ shows

To be bluntly honest I wish they would stop trying to fuck around with the Star Wars musical sound.

They make it a point to emulate the look of the original trilogy in every possible way they that can; costumes, plot points, color grading, vehicle design, creature design, occasional miniatures, usage of puppets, sound effects, etc. etc. etc. But for whatever ridiculous reason they ignore the music, trying to change it into some Hans Zimmer abomination (*cough* Kenobi *cough*).

If Lucasfilm is so anal about keeping Star Wars exactly the way it has been, and STICKING TO THE SAME 20-YEAR PERIOD, why do they then feel the need to alter ONLY the musical vocabulary, which has been the same for the past 50 years?

I am reserving any judgements for this show until I have seen at least the first episode, but it's not sounding very promising so far.

Honestly good. Blomkamp's ego was even bigger, the dude was literally gonna decanonize two movies.

    Jed Kurzel's Alien Covenant.

I saw the film a few days ago on Disney+ (which I enjoyed) and the music quickly grew on me. Stylistically, if you didn't like Streitenfeld's Prometheus work, you'll like this even less, but I really like this style. It's a combination of harmless piano material, string/brass/synth soundscapes, a handful of action cues, and quite a lot of quite harsh, pulsing synths. I can't explain why, but this sort of scoring appeals to me and worked great in the film. Some nice interpretations of Goldsmith's theme without just straight reprisals. The film also has a needledrop from Streitenfeld's score in one scene.

Two bits musically stood out - Chest Burster, an ethereal take on a tinty creature bursing out of someone's chest, and Cargo Lift, a percussive take on an action cue which is somewhere between an orchestral approach and RCP (somewhat different on album - thankfully the promo has the film version).

I've never really listened to Alien or Aliens, and I also enjoy Frizzell's Resurrection, so you can glean from that where my stylistic preferences lie.

I strikes me as a bit odd which cues Kurzel dropped from the album, given that if you like his ambient/minimalist style to begin with, I think you'll like the unreleased bits too. I added some cues from the promo and ended up with a CD's worth of score containing everything I want (including two versions of two cues)

Ah yes, Prometheus killed the franchise, let's just ignore Alien 3, Resurrection or AVP 1 and 2. Typical youtube rubbish.

And he shot the Vader corridor scene, which was a last minute addition -

It's mostly positive because Amazon, who owns IMDB, have been removing literally every single reviews that are below 6 stars. Which is frankly astonishing.

I expected the show to be awful, I ended up enjoying it quite a lot, but this practice is really disgusting in my opinion.

As a casual LOTR fan, I really enjoyed this! Thoroughly exceeded my expectations, especially after reading all the negativity here

The score in particular works a treat. Galadriel's theme is a real keeper, especially the French horn rendition in episode one.

Not going to concern myself with how accurate it is to Tolkien's writings; personally I think that's a foolish endeavour. Adaptations are, by definition, not intended to be replicas of the source material. Even Jackson took some artistic liberties in his trilogies, some more successful than others.

Watched the first 2 episodes. I liked it a lot.
Lot's of people won't probably, but I don't care. I thought it was great.
The music in these first episodes though, is outstanding.
The way McCreary uses all the themes and plays some on top of each other is remarkable. All the themes are so well used and are all recognizable in the show.
I'm sure it will stay high in my Top 10 scores of the year

This show...is not some abysmal, flat-on-face catastrophe.

But I can't say I was feeling anything beyond "oh, this is pleasant, you know?" at the best of times. More detailed thoughts after some sleep and a rewatch.

I like Prometheus a lot actually, unironically. I know there are parts of the plot that don't add up but it doesn't bother me. It's well made, the cast is great, the visual style is great. That one musical theme is very good and expresses the film's philosophical leanings. I like that the movie wasn't just about aliens but showed something new. And I like all the profound questions it poses, even though it doesn't answer them, but these questions have no definite answers anyway, so just to present them and make you think about them is enough.

Yes! It would take too much energy.

I only love Alien, which is in my top 10 of favorite movies. And I get why many prefer Aliens, but I'm not one of them. Everything else of the Alien universe is cannon fodder to me.

    "miles"? Light years better!
At least Scott was (and, for all I know, is still) trying to do something visually, and thematically, interesting.
PROMETHEUS explores a lot of very good themes (origin of the Human race; science vs. religion; the "rights" of A.I.). It's a much better film than most people think it is. While COVENANT doesn't retain the philosophical weightiness of its immediate predecessor, it continues to offer good visuals, and visceral story telling.
Any chance to reacquaint myself with the Alien Universe, is a chance I'll take happily.

Another great episode! I liked just as much as the first one and I love that they're going for the slow burn, political intrigue route that made the original show so succesful in its early seasons, but with a much higher budget. I loved the Dragonstone sequence, and I think the standout was Milly Alcock's acting, who managed to overshadow her more experienced counterparts such as Rhys Ifans, Matt Smith or Paddy Condisdine!

Anyway, I did a short write-up where I analyze and dissect the score by Djawadi or the episode, and how he is slowly introducing more themes and developing them in greatly effective ways. Feel free to check it out and give our thoughs on it!

Hi everyone, I just started a blog where I will write about soundtracks and scores, and I will post my own thematic analysis of both new and old scores. I decided to start it by doing a short write-up on the first episode of House of the Dragon, talking about the returning themes as well as the new ones Djawadi is creating. It's still a bit of a work in progress, but I'm hoping it will slowly grow with lots of content.

Anyway, here it's the write-up of the first episode of House of the Dragon, so feel free to read and comment any feedback you have. Enjoy!
