  1. For that binary sunset moment, I also go with Revenge of the Sith, although I kind of like the consistency ending on the sequels (in which I prefer TLJ rendition, I think also that the musical moment has more sense than in the other two sequels).

Arguably, if not for what happened on Rogue One, Williams wouldn't have gotten involved with Solo in the first place.

I'm not so sure. I think Williams involvement has much to do with Ron Howard and all the schedule problems due to him replacing Lord and Miller. I could imagine Howard approaching Williams an asking him for some music while asking for his approval for Powell. Maybe if Edwards had approached Williams for Rogue One he would have considered composing something... But Lucasfilm was more confident with their movies in 2016 than in 2018...

5 months have passed, and I don't know about this Anthem of Evil...

if Giacchino's imperial theme were a cheap Williams hotdog, this would be Williams Brussels sprouts

The oposite has happened to me. I felt like you during the first listen and now is my top new theme in TROS. I love it both: when is quite building music and when it's a bombastic march.

  4. I'm not sure if the scene was removed very early since according to te audiocomentary Johnson said the scene was there a long time and that he removed it because of pacing... And I see why. The scene is fine but removing it doesn't harm the movie at all, which usually means that the scene is useless. The main loss is that great arrangement of Rey's theme...

In any case I have a bold guess: could it be a Nathan Johnson composition? Maybe Rian asked his cousin and long-time collaborator to write this source piece of music... Or indeed could be a stock piece that they leave there while waiting for Williams to compose something.

  5. As other people are saying I don't find DotF apocalyptic. Is more epic, has the sense of a battle between good and evil more than "oh shit, we are going to die!!". Neodammerung is fine, but it lacks something... I can't point out clearly what it is (maybe the orchestration? The whole Matrix trilogy has one of those Don Davis' orchestrations were every instrument is always playing at the same time) but I don't like it as much as the other two tracks.

Also, I must confess that Mount Doom is developed with one of my least favourites melodies in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I love the theme for the eagles but the rest no so much... And that's why I voted for DotF. I think is a great theme, but definitely not very apocalyptic.

Agree that Rian is a much better filmmaker. But I will say for JJ that his movies are very entertaining (if somewhat hollow), and very over the top, which probably helped them elicit bombastic, engaging material from Williams.

I daresay JW also went a bit above and beyond with his music for TROS, writing new themes even when they weren't "necessary". We didn't need a trio theme, "evil" theme, victory theme, etc but we got them anyway, and they were really good. So he may have been channeling some this-is-my-last-Star-War feels, doing more than was called for, as he so often does.

Yes, I agree with that too! I usually like, or even love, JJ films. I saw two days ago again TFA and I think is a very good film. He also he has the ability to get the best of Giacchino and Williams, I think that with Trevorrow the score of Episode IX would have been less interesting from a thematic point of view. Precisely what I love so much of TROS score is how Williams composed so many interesting (and unnecessary) themes.

Well Rian did show more respect for the music, but in terms of the compositions, IMO Williams sounds more inspired on both TFA and TROS compared to TLJ. However, I do think the music heard in TLJ works really, really well in the film itself, so maybe these films just called for slightly different treatments.

I agree, the new material in TFA and TROS is far superior than in TLJ, but the latter has a much better use of the music. I think that Johnson is a better director than JJ by 12 parsecs. The way they work with their composer is also very different and although I think JJ did better there, after so many micro edits and changes the result is a very choppy score in a movie full of noise. The sound mixing in TLJ is great, and at the end I guess that Johnson knew precisely what did he wanted as the score and asked Williams that. A little more of freedom would had made for a even better score but is good enough as it is.

  8. I voted "Marcus is Captured/ To Berlin" simply because I love the nazi fanfare and the instalment of the grail and other themes there. Probably my second choice is Indy's very first adventure and, next, the boat chase.

That deceased site on which people used to worship the iconic Japanese RPG franchise had a bootleg that claimed to have material from the sessions, including inserts, fixes, etc.

really? And did it have it? Every unreleased track that I got from this score had very crapy sound quality.

Basically this. It's the garbage fire TROS that soured me on the whole trilogy. That JW was able to salvage such an incredible score is miraculous in itself (presumably the film he scored was more comprehensible than the final product).

Also, he's John Williams, and doesn't let a bad movie get in the way of a great score.

You're right, I think that probably he scored a longer and more cohesive edit. That's why I feel TROS might be the most interesting expanded score. Hope to be alive when they finally release these scores...

  10. I didn't liked the movie, it was one of my biggest movie disappointments in my life because I liked very much episodes VIII and VII. I think they could have done something better and after the death of Carrie Fisher I'd moved the last instalment to this year, in order to write a better script and take more time to edit the movie. I don't think it was SW-fatigue but a too tight schedule for a "big movie".

Anyway, speaking of the music, I love it but definitely in the movie doesn't sound as good as it should. Is not well edited, there's too many tracked music for my taste and in many cases the music is simply buried with sfx. An expanded release would definitely put more interest in the score and specially if we can listen to original ideas and themes from Williams.

I'd imagine that at this point of his career, he's just content to be acknowledged by the Academy with their tribute nominations. I doubt he comes in expecting a win anymore. He's probably happy with being the face of the craft's history and tradition for the new kids to look up to.

I have the same impression. Williams doesn't really care about wining, he's happy to still compose. Probably he would have been happier if Thomas Newman won, but...
