I love how the Fondor became a ship with character, and took on the Star Wars trope of a plucky smaller ship outwitting a large Imperial one... and with such creativity. But that's not what this is about. The subtle ways authoritarianism shifts society (Mothma's daughter), the way these downtrodden heroes have their hands forced, the corners the Empire puts them into, the tragedy of their separation and distrust of each other, the anticipation of how they might unite, the prequel-benefit of knowing that they're going to rise up. It's all delicious. Finally, Star Wars for grown-ups.

Many of you have no doubt enjoyed The Goldsmith Odyssey's recent Soundtrack Spotlight on Hollow Man (2000) with special guests Bruce Botnick and synth programmer Nick Vidar who worked on the score...

Connected to this, we also reached out to the office of director Paul Verhoeven, but he preferred to have a more general conversation about his collaboration. Here's the wonderful result!

Wonderful evening!! Williams remarked that while he doesn’t do “Born on the Fourth of July” often, he wanted to hear the Cleveland Orchestra do it, especially Michael Sachs. He also ended the evening by coming out one more time after the iconic “sleepy hands” to say good night and that if the audience kept being so nice to him, he’d have to live to be 100!

Really strong performances. Helena’s Theme is even more beautiful live, and hearing Obi-Wan live again (this time prepared for it and not crying from a surprise appearance like at Celebration earlier this year) was fantastic. Sabrina’s Theme is also always so gorgeous and a strong inclusion.

Encores were Yoda’s Theme, Raiders March (not the abbreviated version - Marion’s Theme was intact!), and Imperial March.

This was my 23rd time seeing Williams conduct live, and my last one of the year. Until next time, Maestro!

I was listening to the album this morning while drinking a good cup of hot coffee in my bed, that was amazing.

I like the whole album with the classical pieces, it's superb.

Stripped back, simple and uncomplicated, refined and perfectly envisioned. I loved many tracks but that finale... wow. This man is just... wow.

I don’t know about everyone here, but I’m really relishing a new JW soundtrack day.  We don’t know how many we have in front of us - just feeling so thankful.

@Trumpeteer So I decided to listen to your Seven Years in Tibet episode, it being one of my favourite dark horse Williams scores, and would like to offer some feedback if I may.

Firstly, I quite enjoyed this episode. Unfortunately, I am very far behind on your podcast - I've been listening to the episodes for some of my favourite scores when I can, and would like to take a look like at some of the hidden gems from the early years eventually.

One comment I'd make is that I felt that focusing on the score as heard in the film is very limiting here, as you point out quite well. It's a real pity that so very much of this score went completely unused, and that what was used was drowned under SFX and dialogue after some considerable edits. I acknowledge that it is important to view the music in context and that this has been the focus of your show for the most part, however, in this case I would have liked to have heard you perhaps go a little deeper into the album material, as it is a phenomenal presentation regardless of its treatment.

Also, you supposed that Williams' might have read Harrer's biography or at least been aware of his story in order to be interested in the project. I'd be curious to find out what indeed was the reason, whether it be that or something else. Intriguing.

I think what grabs me so much about this score is it's subtle efficiency. It's never overstated, and it's equally reliant on it's main theme/ideas as it is athematic material (tense effects of Peter's Rescue, percussion in The Invasion, Eastern influences spread throughout, the classically influenced first half of Regaining a Son, etc.). It also just hits all the right moods and settings for me- classic sweeping theme, that deep, mournful string writing a la the Prequels (see Leaving Ingrid), and a variety of orchestral techniques and contemporary choices (the cultural aspect) that provide ample flavour to the environment.

All in all, I applaud your work and find your presentation to be very listener-friendly and informative. Keep it up!

The longest in recent memory was probably Reznor & Ross' score for Mank at a generous 52 (albeit mostly short) tracks. Certainly stuck out as an anomaly upon release.

Amen. He absolutely has the compositional chops to pull that off, and then some. Sadly not feeling these singles. 'Twould be a real shame if we don't get anything symphonic out of this, and looking at the tracklist I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being 95% uproarious party music in the same vein. Won't speak too soon but I'd hate to have to start counting down the days until the next, *next* Hurwitz-Chazelle for the chance at hearing another Planetarium/Epilogue/The Landing (since he apparently doesn't work with/get hired by anyone else).

Correct! The sample starts at the beginning of the film's last cue, which has that more playful pizzicato tone I referred to yesterday, and the credits start at 0:47, which is when the Haydn excerpt comes in. I don't think the piano sonata runs much more than a minute, so the remainder of the piece is still mostly Williams. I remember some lovely expansion on the mother's theme over the credits, probably a good three or four minutes.
