Hey there -
Recently, whilst perusing my way through some John Williams tunes, I’d begun to put together a collection of where Williams highlights dark, brooding triplets played by his string section. My (tiny) collection ranges thus so far:
(2:53)
(0:43)
I was wondering how many of you guys noticed how occasionally this idea is used, and whether any more examples of this string pattern are out there and used by Williams that you know of? I know there are because I’ve heard them from other soundtracks, just forgot to note down every time I went “Ah! String Triplets!”
The general idea Williams employs with these triplets is to have them staccato with a few slurs here and there between notes to give it super driving momentum.
Happy Listening!

The Hal Leonard suite is not John Williams's original. It was edited and altered from the original. The wind trills at the start are in Hal Leonard but not the score nor film for example.
But it’s still an orchestration by Williams himself as opposed to someone else, telling us that this is how it should be

@Nathan95 it was a grave mistake to contstanly keep switching composers for the HP series. Maybe this is because composers such as Patrick Doyle didn’t want to continue scoring those films, but it would’ve been good for WB to find a composer who would be committed to them all (at least past PoA).

So the little four note line when the melody takes a little break (baa daaa deee dum) used to be soft and legato, but is now stab-y in the video. I see. Also, never before noticed that it used to be played on a horn in 1977 and a trumpet in future recordings. Great research @Fal

Okay, I compared all of the Williams recordings for the 8 films (including the early takes on the 97 SE) plus the McNeely recording for Shadows of the Empire. that section seems to vary wildly between each, with fanfares (though not the same exact fanfare in the above recording) in that section or no fanfares.
Interesting!
In the "Star Wars Suite" score (JW Original Arrangement) this is all the trumpets do instead of that overbearing business during the sweeping string melody at 0:41. The pitches of the notes in the second and third bar (for non-musos, second and third column
) are the same, but rhythm changes in video above.

I Believe the Prequels recording has those.
Could do with the first couple of hits - not the second, louder ones though surely..

With rerecording after rerecording after rerecording, it'll be so fresh to finally hear the original intended recording mashup again in (hopefully) pristine and gloriously remastered quality!
Agreed!

Is it for that new compilation album with the horrendous cover?
That was done at AirStudios - and I've listened to the main theme on that and it has no alterations

I just don't think it's a necessary alteration - it doesn't add anything? Just distracts the ear that's comfortable with the way that theme's been for 41 years!

I have just found a little-known video showing a recent recording of the London Symphony Orchestra playing the Star Wars main theme. It is a recent upload and one that has confused me very much. I'm not sure when this video could've been filmed (during the Solo recording sessions?) or who the conductor is (exposes my lack of knowledge), but if you listen closely between 0:35-0:43 you can hear new little trumpet phrases being played during the "B" melody. - - - - - I don't like them.

The thread title should be "Films you wish were scored by Williams." As currently stated, it means we are ranking our wishes that music currently heard in such films was written by Williams.
Great idea! Altered the title of the thread!
Avatar would have been an interesting one?

It’s all well and good discussing the library of movies John Williams has scored over the years - but what about the films he hasn’t? Which films do you think would have been improved if JW had scored them?
My opinion on this matter is that the rest of the “Potter” films would’ve been much improved with a score by Williams.
what do you guys think?

the LSO, the LSO, the LSO... ok there is the LSO in 1977, and there is the LSO in 2018, conducted by Mr. nobody Greenaway.
The LSO in 2018 and 1977 is regarded as the pinnacle of the symphonic sound, and that’s down to the prestigious and extremely talented performers within the orchestra. The members of the LSO are the creme de la creme of the country’s orchestral talent, so it’s not like the standard of the LSO would get worse, because only the finest players are selected to join the orchestra. Another reason the LSO sounds so magical is because they are always so busy and playing all the time, so are forced to know their colleagues very well and form a remarkable relationship with each other. This was the same in 1977; the LSO have that wonderful sound because they know their follow players well and are always performing and rehearsing together.

"Snoke's bedroom". That must be a cut scene.

You don't find The Spark to be 'super'?
Williams isn’t so good at simple repetition as he is with busy, complicated, technically frightening orchestration. (In my humble, listeners opinion) Although I agree it is a cool track
- TFA just seems to have more - like The Falcon and Follow Me - those time signatures!!?!?

Williams is amazing at releasing tension at JUST the right time - and I do love that track a lot. The noteable strong chords at the end are so significantly memorable because the orchestral tutti contrasts the busyness of the stuff heard earlier. Magnificent writing I agree - but did any moment in the Last Jedi give you as many chills as hearing the Rebel Fanfare when the Falcon is introduced in the Jakku chase scene in TFA - or the reveal of Han Solo and Chewie accompanied by a soft Star Wars main theme? Greater releases of tension in TFA in my opinion. Although I do love the musical and visual moment in TLJ where Rey catches the lightsaber in Snoke’s bedroom and the great brassy Force Theme dominates the senses. I appreciated the overwhelming brass Force themes in TLJ a lot.
-
The Force Awakens’ score just seems to be richer. Although there are some cool moments in the Last Jedi, there are no super moments in my opinion, whereas TFA just seems to be more diverse. Although the actual recording of TLJ is a lot better than TFA.

I mean.. it’s nice that the LSO are rekindling their relationship with John Williams, what with the concert in October and all - but what a pointless album! I hope it’ll be on Apple Music because I won’t be forking out to buy it otherwise

So, come on guys, let’s hear you - which, out of all 8 SW masterpieces, is your favourite? And why?
To kick things off here - mine is The Empire Strikes Back, namely because of the introduction of the Imperial March, the Battle of Hoth and the Clash of Lightsabers.
