Pellaeon reacted to jojoju2000 in I just realized that John Williams is one of the last major figures of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
He is six years older than Natalie Wood. 2 years older than Sophia Loren. 19 days older than Elizabeth Taylor. He played with Shirley Temple as a Kid, played the Piano for the Original West Side Story Movie in 1961, He has worked with both Bernsteins, Herrman, Waxman, Mancini, Alfred Newman, and Jerry Goldsmith. His first film score was in 1954.

He's also 3 years older than Elvis. 3 years older than Julie Andrews. And around the same age as Rita Moreno.

I just can't imagine; the immense influence JW has had on not just music, but global cultural history. Will we ever have someone like JW in Film Music again ? Who now can have the respect of both film and classical music ? I can't believe there hasn't been a biography written about him. Imagine; the seat JW must have taken being a witness to major cultural events in global history. There aren't many from the Golden age left; in all fields.

Okay yeah sure; JW didn't have his peak until the 1980s with Spielberg and Lucas, and his conducting position for the Boston Pops.  But he is from the time period; and he's the last composer who writes in the Golden Age ethos.

The story of the Rings was certainly LotR setup.

Númenor came about independently as part of a time-travel novel that Tolkien was writing in conjunction with C.S. Lewis’s space-travel novel (eventually a trilogy). This was in 1936-37, right around the time The Hobbit was being published (obviously after it was written and before there was a clamor for a direct sequel).

Sharing them as fact? The two posts which begin, “I thought?”

My post is not “straight from” anywhere other than my own 2019 post speculating on the subject right here on this board. I’ve always tried to be careful to separate the gossip from the official info, but at the end of the day, this is not a news agency; we can shoot the shit a little. If you think I said something wrong, I’d be happy to be corrected. Accusing your fellow posters of “misinformation” has such a sinister, slanderous quality about it. We’re just talking about star war movies!

The masks make sense in an age of pitched battles involving fire-breathing dragons, but in later periods, they very likely would have fell out of use almost entirely, given that any dragon attacks would have been very sudden affairs, a la Smaug's attack.

I get that they can’t use either of PJ’s warg designs, but why does the warg have cartoon pug eyes? Just make it a huge wolf, it’s not fucking hard.

The truly hardcore are getting the individual releases, for the packaging/art.

For movies 2-6, at this point I wouldn’t invest any time or money in any non-4K Blu-ray — neither the standalone releases nor the discs included in the new 4K sets. My understanding is they’re all from a decade and a half ago and suffer heavy DNR.

TMP Theatrical (2021 remaster) or Director’s (2022 remaster) are going to be fine on Blu-ray, I expect.

I agree. Galadriel is definitely behaving like a petulant little shit.

I think they have completely overdone the hot-headed, trigger-happy young warrior portrayal of her character.

It just doesn't square with Tolkein's Galadriel at all. I expected Galadriel to be worldly, powerful, a ruler, a politician, someone who would use the powers of her mind and will to achieve her outcomes than pull a dagger out in the first instant. In short, I expected her behave like a high-elf born in Valinor when the trees were still alive, Noldor royalty and imbued with immense grace, dignity and power. With millennia of wisdom sitting upon her brow - she has witnessed some of the most cataclysmic events of Arda (the destruction of the 2 trees and the sinking of Beleriand), she isn't going to be triggered by minor occurrences.

I feel this show's Galadriel is a completely different character. And a step down from the character Tolkein created.

Just canceled my preorder for “The Complete Adventure.” By all accounts, none of the sound work that was done for the DE 4K made it into the SLV 4K. Anyway, the idea that I would have to buy the DE if I want to watch the SLV is a real dick move. Not to mention I would have to buy a 4K player because the SLV is only on 4K. And yet I am still paying to have the other versions on Blu-ray. Not to mention at the end of the day I would probably prefer the Laserdisc rip anyway. What was I thinking? Luckily Amazon’s shipping was delayed.

It has been known since The Peoples of Middle-earth that the Blue Wizards arrived in the Second Age. And now we know from The Nature of Middle-earth, in the chapter “Note on the Delay of Gil-galad and the Númenóreans,” that they definitely arrived in the first half of the Second Age, i.e. before the death of Celebrimbor and before War of the Elves and Sauron (and way before the downfall of Númenor).
