  1. I mean I don't care how he picks his nose or where he walks his dog, but do I want to know if he's an abuser? Absolutely.
  2. My CD just shipped from Mondo. Wasn't expecting it until September, so that's a nice surprise.
  3. Apparently Elfman and his team had no idea it was coming until not long before, so I'd be surprised if Lalaland knew more than a month ahead. I'm no expert at all on this sort of thing, but I don't see how Elfman can 'win'. He missed payments. Even if he and his team could unequivocally prove that no abuse took place, he agreed to making those payments, no?
  4. Nightbreed is notable for being perhaps Elfman's only foray into straight horror territory. Lots of movies he's scored have elements of horror, but they're often paired with fantasy or comedy elements. Parts of Nightbreed sound like Elfman does Friday the 13th.
  5. I came across this interview with Nomi Adabi from earlier in the year. She refers to the case with Elfman a fair bit, obviously not using him by name because it had not gone public yet. Season 2, Episode 1: Nomi Abadi — Ella Jarman-Pinto (ellajarmanpinto.com) Some takeaways from quite a heavy listen: She alleges at 32:35 hat her aggressor has done this to 'many' other women, specifying a woman in the 1990s. She knows that if the story were to break, there are lot of texts messages that will be used against her as it took her a long time to realise she was being abused. She lost contact with a lot of people, including friends, mentors and her therapist, who didn't believe her. (The Rolling Stone article mentions that some of Adabi's closest friends didn't believe her, and they are referred to here.) But her career soon took off in a positive way once she removed herself from the situation. I know - we don't know anything etc. But Elfman's been my favourite composer for twenty years and I can't help but want to know as much as possible. EDIT: In a separate interview that seemingly took place after this one, Abadi says that she doesn't know if her aggressor (Elfman) abused anyone else. 47:55 57.   6. Elfman is co-writing a concert piece for violin, percussion and solo voice with two other composers. I think the other composers are Powell and Beltrami.
  7. I think Murder on the Orient Express is top 3 Doyle, and it was my favourite score of 2017. The Armstrong theme is just achingly sad. And once it is introduced, it's almost omnipresent. When a character is trying to hide who they are, the theme is buried in orchestration; when a character's link to the family is exposed, the theme is played more overtly. Doyle, like with Death on the Nile, is telling the story how it is, not how it's initially presented to be. I shrugged it off the first time I saw the movie and heard the score, but the more I came back to it, the more I realised what Doyle was doing. The best version of Murder on the Orient Express isn't by Lumet, Branagh or whoever directed the Suchet version, it's by Doyle. The Armstrong theme is always playing with or against the mystery theme and the (sadly ditched for Death on the Nile) Poirot theme. Ultimately, the solo piano that's come to represent the tragedy behind this case comes to play that theme, showing that he is deeply impacted by what has happened. And it's been said many times before, but the scoring of the big reveal is just perfect. The juxtaposition of that desperately sad music with the chaotic, oddly disturbing murder is so, so effective. I do enjoy Nile, too, but the narrative here is just airtight. The journey from glorious decadence to opaque mystery to tragedy is brilliantly realised. That little run by Branagh and Doyle - Cinderella -> Murder on the Orient Express -> All is True - was Doyle at his storytelling best.
  8. Relistened to one of my favourite Doyles today, and was, again, moved by this track, featuring vocals by Doyle's son. (This track is actually 'She was a Real Lion', but it has been incorrectly titled.)
  9. I wonder if they're waiting for the Elfman drama to blow over or if they don't know what to do about Nightbreed.
  10. I'm happy for a writer change, but the directors leaving is a shame - I thought the set-pieces in Scream VI were really exciting. The plot, however, was lightly stuck together with tape.
  11. Any guesses as to what the upcoming animated movie might be? I don't see any prior collaborators listed as directing one. I'm gonna guess that it's not going to be a high profile one.
  12. Elfman has two live shows in a week and a half, so I guess we'll see. Any chance this is what's holding up Nightbreed? It seemed good to go like a month ago and now there's nothing. The more I read Elfman and Elfman's rep's statements, the more awful they sound.
  13. Is there any frame of reference for this? Just wondering what the immediate fallout of this could be. Elfman gets booted from The Actor and Beetlejuice 2? If the latter happens, I'd guess he's done. He has a lot of upcoming shows, too.

  15. Elfman's my favourite musician, so reading that article this morning was a bit too much for me to fully process. I've just finished reading it a second time, trying my best to pretend this were any other prominent musician, and I honestly have a really bad feeling about it all. What I can't get past is that in 2020, when all of this was still very hush-hush, Abadi founded the Female Composer Safety League for victims of sexual abuse in the music composing industry.

  17. Worth bearing in mind that reaction from film/tv music fans and even concept fans to McCreary's work was somewhat lukewarm at first. It was all too dense to fully appreciate. Its reputation kept growing and growing as we all kept coming back to it and we could pick up on all the nuances and interconnectivity. Data shows that people generally bailed on RoP before the season ended. They certainly didn't revisit it afterwards, either. The extent of McCreary's achievement will have gone unnoticed.
  18. This review is really odd because he mixes up several themes. I always enjoy reading his reviews because, even if I disagree with him, his analysis is usually thorough. He is factually wrong several times in this review. I think he was so bothered by Elfman writing 'new' themes that he wasn't as keen to dig deep. It's a shame because there's a lot going on here.

  20. Serenada Schizophrana premiered on February 2005 and was released in October 2006. Rabbit & Rogue premiered June 2008 and was released in June 2017. His violin concerto premiered June 2017 and was released March 2019. His piano quartet premiered February 2018 and was released March 2019. His percussion quarter premiered September 2019 and was released May 2022. Since then, he has had four premieres that are yet to be released. I don't think any have been recorded. The percussion and cello concerto were available online but have since been taken down.
