It would be really nice to call attention to the preservation efforts and bring some awareness to the “normies”.   And of course, Matessino would reciprocate and graciously acknowledge the importance of such work.   More general awareness would be a benefit to the projects yet to be futureproofed.

I honestly love this release. I am glad they were finally able to get the session tapes that had all of "Ultimate War" untouched including the versions of "To War" and "Crossed Swords" with their film inserts in the main score.

This set is definitely worth the double dipping as it pretty much makes the other one obsolete.

Decided to start a thread to list all of these since I've started documenting them. There are a surprising number of these available to the public.

From ANH, everyone knows about takes 16-20 of 1m2 Star Wars on the 1997 set, and the alternate takes throughout the 1993 album are pretty well known as well (though not necessarily documented). But I was surprised to find that the 1997 and 2018 albums actually have alternate takes too! Here's a few that I've found already:

1M3 The War has an alternate take on the 1993 set from 2:15-2:58, the 1997/2018 sets have the correct one.

2M3 The Little People has an alternate take in a couple spots. The 1993 and 1997 sets both have the wrong take from 3:12-3:16, where the 2018 has the right one. However, the 1993 and 2018 sets have the wrong take for the ending Imperial statement, where the 1997 set has the correct one.

2M5 More Little People has an alternate mix for 1:25-end on the 1993 and 1997 sets, where the 2018 has the correct mix. I thought this was a different take originally but @Manakin Skywalker noticed that the 1997 and 2018 versions do indeed phase, so it must be a different mix and not a different take.

I'll keep updating this thread as I find more. Feel free to include ones from other Star Wars scores, they don't have to just be ANH

Wouldn't it be dope if Mike Matessino was at one of these concerts (basically the only ones JW attends) and they had him come out before a cue and explain the process of putting together an unreleased cue and then JW plays the cue/deep cut that is only available on an expansion.

I think it would be great way to market the amazing work that goes into these expansions and to show casual people there's so much more than 'throne room/end titles'

I know Dreyfuss has done this with a Jaws cue and Spielberg for E.T.

    Idk just a thought.

Not to me! The OST version is much choppier.

What I find kinda weird is that this is a huge, complex score with lots of themes, I've only watched the movie 3 times and heard the whole thing 4-6 times, all of those listens being in the last 4 months, and I already feel like I know it very well and largely grasp the structure. JW made it easily graspable despite its scale!

I think that's the crux of the matter. Obviously, fan obsession (heck, any obsession) can be unhealthy. That's why we have movies like THE FAN or MISERY. When it's taken to the extreme, and the line between reality and fiction is blurred.

I do think most people manage to navigate that limit pretty well. At least in my own life, I've never encountered any "scary" individuals like that. I've READ about them, like that guy stalking Spielberg some years back, but not actually met anyone. Not that I'm aware of, anyway. Unless you count autograph hounds etc.

Finally, there's the question of research legitimacy and invasion of privacy. I'm well aware I tread that line myself, when I go into such detail about Williams' early life, for example. That particular thing combines three interests of mine - John Williams, artist beginnings (I edited a magazine on debut films a few months back that also nurtured some of that) and genealogy (I'm very much into researching my own lineage, but as an extension of that have an interest in the genealogy of other people too, at least those I have some connection to). The important thing here is SELF-CENSORSHIP, i.e. know what's appropriate to share and not.

And ideally, whatever findings one encounters in one's research, will reflect on the way we approach their work too (for example, knowing that Williams has musicians all over the place in his family, certainly informs his early schooling in that area).

I have a very niche obsession which over a few years I shared with someone on the other side of the world (long story... one of those endless searches for stock music used in a TV show) and my co-searcher admitted to me once that he was starting to have problems a bit like this. He was so obsessed with searching endlessly that he was starting to neglect basic social activity and family interactions.

My limit on this subject has more been at the level of those making detailed edits of the prequels, for example, i.e. searching for the best sources, making careful edits, and celebrating when a new source of music is found. A lot more detective work and internet research is needed for my thing, and I wrote a blog based on our findings, but I've always been very conscious of when it's time to switch off and go and do something else, like any hobby. It's partly helped by another group of obsessives looking for stuff from a different TV show (with overlapping music usage) and nowadays I just let them do the hard work

Thankfully I have a personal distraction in the form of a website I run, which occasionally needs attention and has rather a lot of bodges to iron out gradually.

Let's look at this from annother angle.
A guy I know, in his profesional life a technical consultant, is in private as one of his many hobbies obsessed with historical research about Napoleon Bonaparte. He runs an own website about it, visits with his family historical places around that, discusses with others about new scientific publications around the topic.
At the same time there are hundreds of professional historians dedicating their whole life to the research on such a topic.
Almost everyone working in science has a certain kind of obsession for the subject, to which they dedicate their professional and big amounts of their private life.
And this kind of obsession can be very fulfilling and productive.

Can obsession be toxic and destructive? Of course it can. When you are neglecting your duties, your family, your health, your social life, your children etc. When it goes hand in hand with drug abuse. There might be some other factors. Many artists are and were known for that. But you really have to dig deep into the private and social life of such a person to be able to estimate that.

So my point is, obsession in itself is like many things neither good or bad. It depends on many factors. I on my end don't see myself in the position to make any remote diagnosis on anyone that I just know form the output of their hobby in social media. And I always would be very careful to do so. As I remember reports and statements from professional psychoanalysts in news articles being asked about their assessment on the mental health of famous celebrities or politicians, that they would not dare to come up with such diagnosis without having talked to these people directly in a few analytical sessions.

What I could come up with would just be some projection of what I want to see in a person and interpreting everything that person does in a certain negative direction. But why should I do that? Isn't that somehow... toxic?

I listened to the full score again after a few months and the music is just too good. There isn’t a single dull or uninteresting moment, and the way he weaves the themes together so seamlessly makes it feel like you’re listening to a concert work rather than something written to picture. This may be Williams’ most complex score, and definitely remains one of my favourites.

Brando got a reaction from ThePenitentMan1 in Favorite JW Score (aside from Star Wars)
Hook is my all time favorite JW score, because it is loaded with themes and the score works so brilliantly with the film, and in particular, the Childhood theme used in a specific sequence comes to mind. You use the word 'engaged' and what comes to mind is the scene where Peter breaks down and finally remembers his childhood, and the music drops and IMO so crucial (and Robin Williams monologue) to this scene because you feel him, you understand what it's like to feel abandoned, or 'they forgot about me', as Peter says to Tink. Everyone experiences that and they know what that pain feels like and when I watch this scene, the music makes me feel these same emotions that Peter is feeling, and it works so well in regards to the film.

And then, a few minutes later, JW uses the same theme to launch Peter into the sky as he remembers why he came to Neverland: his kids were his happy thought, and he remembers how to fly and he becomes Peter Pan, and the music takes a complete 180 and goes from heartbreakingly sad to a huge, triumphant, heroically return of Peter Pan:
