Brando reacted to MrJosh in John Williams Returns to ‘Star Wars’ Universe with ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Theme - Jon Burlingame Variety article
This is really exciting news. My first thought goes to how fortunate we are that this is happening. I still remember seeing ROTS in theaters and having the thought in my head that it would be the last new John Williams Star Wars music that I would hear and accepted that fact.
How crazy that here we are in 2022 and there is new John Williams Star Wars music to look forward to (after 3 additional movies, Solo, Galaxy's Edge, etc)...

They emailed my annual renewal notice yesterday.
Now I know why there was a price increase; I'm paying for Williams to write more Star Wars music!

Just saw this great perspective in the FSM thread
Amazing.
Was just thinking that this extends Williams' tenure of writing new Star Wars material 3 YEARS beyond where it was before, since TROS was 2019!

Incredible to read that TROS was 2 years ago. It feels like last December!

Brando reacted to Marian Schedenig in John Williams recorded something for "A TV project" at Sony sound stage in LA on Monday
Williams is clearly retiring from film scoring because he'll be incredibly busy for the next ten years wall-to-wall scoring half of the new Star Wars shows Disney is churning out.

I guess Lucasfilm doesn't really care about secrecy anymore if the scoring session door just says "Kenobi" on it. Next we'll be hearing about how they're scoring it with the Kenobi Symphony Orchestra

Maybe James Mangold brought it over to inspire JW? "Remember how fun Indy is... C'mon, please score my Indy 5.... Pretty please." Must have worked.

It's not the sheet music. I have the Raiders one (signed by JW!) and it is spiral bound so it sits well on a piano stand.
I don't think it is the Illustrated Screenplay either. See attached image of that spine.
I actually think it is The Storybook Based on the Movie. (I found an image eBay of the spine - colors do not exactly match, but I think this book had a few printings. The words and Random House publisher do match.)
Beat me to it!

When my wife and I went for Across the Stars in 2019, we arrived early to walk the grounds which was wonderful. We then stayed afterwards until sunset just strolling around. It was really a perfect Sunday afternoon. Highly recommended.

These bound volumes contain photocopies.

At first, I thought I'd be weeping after the headline, but the contentment with which Williams is re-starting his new pursuit of concert works composition is oddly comforting and satisfying. This is a man who is not only still sharp as a tack, but has the wisdom and clarity we all should hope to have at the twilight of our years. If John's new purpose is concert works, then I will be along for the ride. I've been so laser focused on his film scores, it's an area of his career I'm ready to explore as well.

Throwing opinions about how much this film or that project are beyond or worth of his time and talent is a useless exercise. At this point in his life, the man is doing whatever he wants and likes to do. He lived a greatly privileged life, working with incredible people and on projects that will last beyond all of our lifetimes. He sounds also very serene about approaching the end of his journey on Earth, so he values time greatly and, as he says, six months now is an extremely long period for him. He knows better than any other how to manage time as it's part of his DNA as a composer. We as fans might approve or not if he's using this time for doing another franchise score or a personal concert piece, but it's not our call. Let's just be grateful he's spending his last years among us writing new music and doing concerts all around the world.

You actually think JJ wrote stuff down before shooting?

I look at it differently.
Williams has been stewing on this mindset change for two years, isolating at home with no film scores on his plate.
And yet, despite his epiphany, he still met with Mangold to hear him out. He still read the script. And with full knowledge it would be an incredibly tight deadline, even scoring sequences before a final cut was ready, and even after his experience on the Star Wars sequels (which one could interpret as the straw that broke the camel's back), he still agreed to score it.
I refuse to believe he returned out of 'obligation.' He's walked away from plenty of franchises despite being courted to return. He could have shook Mangold's hand and recommended another composer, especially if he read the script and thought it wasn't worth his time (which he clearly now values more than ever).
Isn't it possible he was so enamored by Mangold's vision that, despite his grievances with the industry, despite knowing it would be a six month commitment at the age of 90, despite delaying his plan to focus on other passions, that the film was simply too good an opportunity to refuse?
All things considered, I can't think of a greater vote of confidence in James Mangold.

I think he loves his actors! They are usually who he writes his themes for, after all, trying to evoke their strengths and personality, like his favorite soloists. We obviously saw how smitten he was with Daisy Ridley, and I think Harrison as Indy would mean something to him. He is the Raiders March. "That damn music follows me everywhere" as Ford said at Williams's AFI.
Now, he may wish he was writing something else altogether for the concert hall haha, but I think he must feel like he has some stake in sending him off. I don't know why else he'd be doing it without Spielberg.
