Martinland reacted to Thor in All-Star ‘Peter Gunn’ Session With John Williams, Quincy Jones, Herbie Hancock Pays Tribute to Henry Mancini
You know you have an all-star line-up when even dead people come back to record!

Martinland reacted to bigjimwilson in Your favorite re-arrangement of Devil's Dance?
I'm going with the Mutter.....
I don't love everything they've done together... but this might be my favourite of the bunch. I think her playing style lends itself really well to the piece. There's mischief, excitement and danger in there. And the whole ending just sounds absolutely massive and awesome.
Plus, I was there so being completely biased it wins by default in my head anyway!

When I first saw the length and meticulousness of this post, I assumed it was Jay!
I don't know this story. What happened?

Martinland reacted to Marian Schedenig in Last Night I dreamed about John Williams...
I had a JW dream last night. I was tasked, together with a friend, to return something (I can't remember what) to JW's house. When we got there in the morning, he was still asleep, so I decided to browse through his CD collection. I found an album with something by Mendelssohn and also a suite from The Reivers on it and decided to borrow it. My friend had to leave, but I was still there when Williams got up at 9:30 and had breakfast. I think he offered me some. We talked a bit (I forget about what) and he told me come back next day. I was going to next morning, but something (can't remember) came up and I didn't get around to it until the afternoon. JW was still there, but I mostly talked a bit with my uncle, who was also living there (at that point, JW's house had a vague resemblance to my grandparents').
I think the dream was a bit more substantial, but that's all I could remember when I wrote it down this morning.

Martinland reacted to Jurassic Shark in John Williams’ First and Last Great Score
First great score: Back to the Future
Last great score: Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves
-
Martinland reacted to Garrett in John Williams’ First and Last Great Score
First masterpiece: Daddy-O
Last masterpiece: Towering Inferno
Last good score: Midway
After Towering Inferno, John Williams changed for the worse. He was never the same after that, in my opinion. It seems that once he reached his mid-40’s and entered middle age, he lost the energy and vigor of his youth that had made his music so special.

Martinland reacted to ajc384 in Disney Emporium releases Indiana Jones: The Complete CD Collection (Expected ship date is March 27, 2024.) No new expansions - Includes the previous Concord Records programmes plus KotCS and DoD OSTs
You have to laugh when you notice the good folk at DME have quietly pushed the shipping date from late March to mid-April. Looks like another fine DME mess in the making, even before you try to get your head around the insanely high asking price of the set.

Why not?
The Mouse owns just about every other fucking thing in the entire world.

Martinland reacted to Smeltington in John Williams is becoming a Disney Legend
"Disney Legends Award recipients will also participate in a hand print ceremony at the end of the event, and their bronzed prints will be displayed in the Disney Legends Plaza at the company’s Burbank headquarters."
Think John will show up for this? Maybe Harrison will have a new colonoscopy story to share with him?

New Mark Graham video.

Here's some screen caps as I watch
He says the sketch he picked up from Williams a few weeks ago was updates to an arrangement for a concert
And then he said that at 11AM PST today, there is a recording of Star Wars music. Maybe Williams wrote something for The Acolyte?

Martinland reacted to Thor in Why did John Williams never have a cameo in a Spielberg movie?
Still a pain to think about, now years later. All the work that went into creating those easter egg references, and the whole scene is over and done with in a nano second. Like most of the film, it hurries along.
A funny thing to think about -- could Oma Tres have survived? The whole planet was blown to smitheerens, so probably not. But maybe there was time to evacuate, like some managed. I expect an entire spin-off series focussing on Tres' life, and how he managed to own a bar on Kijimi.

Compared to what else had been nominated.... yes.
Compared to the voters leaning towards newer or younger composers... no.

Martinland got a reaction from BB-8 in John Williams receives 54th Oscar nomination for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny!
Actually yes, after I saw that Variety article ... they could have honoured, for one last time before it's over, traditional Hollywood craftsmanship at the very least, and the oldest ever nominated personality. (if that is true?) I tried to forget about the hype around freshness, youth, and Oscar sweepers to believe in it...
We even made it a point to stay up late and watch the whole thing, something I haven't done since over 30 years (Schindler year!) and probably never will ever again.
I adored the Japanese folk, honestly and quite sympathetically accepting a trophy for Godzilla and the surprising but well-deserved nod to Miyazaki. (a Williams situation right there) ... and we even watched these two fine movies with our daughter at the earliest screenings possible here in Austria.

As predicted: synth clutter is today's mainstream and wins the mainstream prize.
One reason more to love John Williams.

Right. But even the term "modern" is an old fashioned one in the meantime.
Not really. I just said, DoD was the best score, not that it is going to win.

He should have!
He'll be more machine than man by then.

The oscars are a farce. Who gives a damn sh.t? Invitations from the leading orchestras are much more important than all this academy awards bs. I doubt the Oppenheimer composer will ever conduct the Berlin Philharmonic (does he even conduct himself?).
