Batu Sener’s The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild
LSH replied to PrayodiBA's topic in General Discussion
I think it’s great. As I said in the Now Playing thread, this was always going to a great opportunity for Sener to launch a solo career (bet Powell is 100% behind him too). There’s a good chance he’ll do well out of all this… and the best of luck to him! Edit: It’s even better that his first big solo project is one within a well-established franchise. Better than being thrown a studio movie that has been festering during Covid that nobody had any faith in. -
THE ICE AGE ADVENTURES OF BUCK WILD - BATU SENER Thoroughly enjoying this. Sener can certainly pull-off a convincing and loyal impersonation of his mentor. What will be interesting is if this project serves as a launchpad for more solo work and we'll get to hear some of his own style. Exciting.

Composer Threads James Newton Howard thread
LSH replied to nightscape94's topic in General Discussion
Does anybody know what this George Lucas / ILM documentary is that JNH mentions he's scored (at 1:06:21)? I can't seem to find any information about it, or even evidence that it exists. -
Christ Michael, take a break. Seriously though, with Pixar recently diversifying with their choices of composers (Reznor & Ross, Romer, Göransson), this would have been such a great opportunity for somebody lesser known.

What Is The Last Film You Watched? (Older Films)
LSH replied to Mr. Breathmask's topic in General Discussion
Haha, true. But it does depend on how impressionable you are. Like most of my family, I’m from and spent my younger years growing up in Birmingham but have moved around a hell of a lot since and my accent had all but disappeared and is very neutral now. And yet my aunt who has lived in Australia since 1988 still sounds like a full blown Brummie. -
Tough one because I love all of the top 3. Sommersby pushes in front slightly I think.

Well it is created and co-written by one of the UK's finest comedy writers of the past 20 years. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesse_Armstrong

The first minute of Four Elections, by the sounds of it. -

I honestly don't care. We don't get anywhere near enough Powell these days. If we can get loyal replications of his style on top I'm happy. -

Stunning opening cue, I just wish Newman had revisited some of these ideas later in the score. -
Crikey, this looks appalling. And Thomas Newman is scoring it!

I still can't decide which of Horner's Zorro scores I prefer. This one is certainly more action-packed... and that's the mood I'm in right now. -
Exactly. Still a far better average per year output than most.

I've never heard The Fury.

APOLLO 13 - JAMES HORNER Just excellent. In my top 3 scores ever. That main theme is simply stunning. It makes me cry so very much.

Love this one, it’s gorgeous. Young in quiet drama mode is something I want to hear more of. This, Murder In The First, The Hurricane and Something The Lord Made all demonstrate his ability in this area. However, I would like to know the circumstances surrounding its rejection and Deborah Lurie’s subsequent hiring. I understand the film sat on a shelf for a good while before its release but Lurie’s replacement score - competent but ultimately inferior - doesn’t exactly explore new ground. Tonally, they are both very similar… so why replace? -

Even that brief description intrigues me. Will have to check this out myself. -
I rather enjoyed this too. Had no idea Gustavo Santaolalla was the composer. Aside from some of his trademark guitar noodling here and there it isn’t entirely obvious it’s him. Impressive.

THE SIXTH SENSE Been a while since I last watched this but it holds up pretty well I think... compared to M. Night's recent output. It's a film that you wouldn't think has much re-watch value, given how all the clues to Malcolm's situation become so obvious after your first viewing. Toni Colette steals the show here... her acting is incredible. James Newton Howard's score has always been an understated favourite of mine. Yes, there's a couple of jumpy scaries here and there but it's an overall very understated score. Building tension mostly, and then a lovely finale cue which is quite beautiful. -
Whatever you think of it just thank God he’s scoring movies of this sort and not moody thrillers and the like.

Newman's magnum opus in my opinion. Everything you've ever expected from Thomas Newman is in this score. The quirky, the rhythmic, the sparse piano thing that he does, the completely haunting lush strings and meandering woodwinds... The Main Title is worth the price alone. What an utterly gorgeous piece of music. I can remember listening to it on repeat on my Sony Walkman walking to work every morning back in '04. Anyway, I think this is the best thing he's ever done. Other scores of his have better individual cues (outside of the aforementioned) but as an overall work... this is sublime. I'm a huge Newman fan and I'd die to hear something of this quality from him again. I'd go as far as putting it in my top 20 'Desert Island' scores of all time. It's that good. Gives me fucking goosebumps every bloody time. -
Oh god. This is the same duo that produced a fairly good Bond score?

As a 90s child I remember the film well too. The score is very good - what a year 1995 was for Horner! I'm even a fan of the song. I'm not just from the same city as the great Steve Winwood, but the same street!
