  1. Very good. I will also definitely try out that playlist you listed. I've always struggled between both presentations, so thanks again.
  2. Thank you for posting that theme analysis! I was already a huge fan of the score but that has done wonders for my understanding of it.
  3. Yes, I think I'll agree with that. Also.. a shoutout to the Re-entry & Splashdown cue: As in the film, the first four minutes is literally waiting for something to happen, and Horner scores it beautifully. It's incredibly tense but also so so emotional. It could have been just four minutes of a tremolo string line keeping us waiting but he modulates and tempers so creatively and beautifully to keep the interest up, with that snare drum always there. And then the eventual release...
  4. THE RIVER CAM - ERIC WHITACRE An unashamed Vaughn Williams impression attempt but still very lovely.
  5. Listening to APOLLO 13 again tonight, I was reminded how much I love those final moments of All Systems Go / The Launch, when everything has calmed down. The solo trumpet, then that rising harp/tremelo strings line with the softly cooing choir. So gorgeous and a lovely 'mini coda' to an otherwise epic cue.
  6. APOLLO 13 - JAMES HORNER My favourite Horner score. I don't listen to it often, for that reason. But I'm drunk, so I need it. Many moments to behold. The lonely, plaintive opening version of the theme... and the glorious, full-blooded iterations in the final couple of cues. And all the stuff in between. The incredible The Launch, the thrilling Master Alarm (the best version of that particular structure he's used before), the haunting The Dark Side Of The Moon... it's all sublime. One of the best Horner scores, and one of the best scores of the 90s. I love it.
  7. I guess I can appreciate its construction. I just don't find it particularly listenable.
  8. HALLOWEEN KILLS Wow, what a pile of bollocks. I quite liked the first instalment of this new Halloween timeline but this is just a mess.
  9. Just listened to the first few cues of DUNE. Couldn't get any further. Does having watched the film assist in enjoying the music?
  10. Film music on a first date is a very ballsy move. I only did it once but I knew the girl was a massive film buff like me. Can't remember exactly what I played... might have been some James Horner or Thomas Newman.
  11. I haven't heard the expansion yet but, while this is a score I hold dear and consider a highlight of the 90s, it's not one I listen to very often. I don't often listen to it in its entirety either; I just have a few highlight cues spattered within various compilations. I agree, it does have a Barry-esque approach; the main theme is extremely prevalent which lessens its impact.
  12. Listening to VERTICAL LIMIT by James Newton Howard... It's a tiny little moment but I love this subtle chord change, with strings, in the final cue It's A Good Song (1:13)... JNH is great at making lovely chord changes but this one is a favourite. It's just a great segue from a Cmaj into an inverted Bb(add2).
  13. THE LAST DUEL A bleak 14th century soap opera masquerading as something profound. Outside of Jodie Comer (who is brilliant in everything she does) I wasn't convinced by any of the main performances. It all felt a little on the nose and stagey. Everything 'physical', ie the production design and cinematography is, as always for Scott, exemplary and I do like the score, as others here have, particularly the end credits 'song'. 2.5 / 5
  14. Martin Campbell should direct every Bond's first outing. That should just be a given.
  15. Yes but at least The Last Airbender has the value of being unintentionally hilarious. Same with The Happening.
  16. Yes, please don’t post this absolute bollocks again.
  17. Nice, I've been eagerly awaiting this for a while. Looking forward to Newman's score too.
  18. Not the most engaging of Howard's repertoire but it is a lovely half hour of inoffensive string and woodwind noodling that gets me through making dinner.
  19. "White Knight", for the superb building of tension before the action kicks in.
  20. I wouldn't be behind a solo JNH collaboration with Nolan. Look at all the projects JNH has been doing lately... lots of big, melodic, old-fashioned loveliness. Save the dour Nolan projects for Zimmer and the rest.
  21. I agree. For a composer who is generally uninterested in scoring action films I think Newman wrote some pretty engaging action music. The opening chase in Skyfall is brilliantly scored IMO.
  22. I’m packing up to move house. Breaks my heart to bring down movie posters but it does inspire some listening…
