None of my close colleagues at work (with whom cinema is one of very few topics of conversation) knew anything of it this morning.

I always thought Wikipedia was unreservedly accurate.

It's very much in that classic 90s D. Newman family adventure film style. I was glad he was given an opportunity to write a score like that in the 2010s. Good stuff!
That's exactly what took me by surprise. A lot of it sounds like it should have come from the 90s, especially the softer, emotional cues. The excellent recording just tops that all off.

Far and Away has a few good parts.
I was this close to lambasting you for that comment but, on reflection, I guess it really does only have a couple of [outstanding] highlights. The Land Race cue is essential for any budding Williams enthusiast; in fact, it's the only cue I return to nowadays.

Yes, it's certainly a hidden gem. For once my ignorance has rewarded me.

I'd only expect this sort of pedantry from Thor.

Sappy Goldsmith
POWDER/RUDY
Yeah, I kinda agree with that too. Goldsmith wrote some powerful themes in his time but I find Rudy just a bit sugary. It doesn't help that it was so often imitated afterwards for other sports dramas.

JNH - his generic Bourne-like action scores for thrillers (Salt, The Bourne Legacy, The Tourist, etc).
This.

Why does she need to be related?

I knew that already but the point is - as some people outside of the British Isles might not know or notice - Northern and 'Southern' Irish accents are really very different.

Has anyone tried Audiobro's Modern Scoring Strings?
How different it is in sound from LASS?
I'm eager to know too. Not that I'll be able to afford it any time soon.
LASS is a great library but takes a lot of time and effort to learn that I simply haven't invested.

I love this particular era (pre-Shawshank) of Thomas Newman's catalogue.

-
Nah, the third one is the best. Best visuals, best score. It's also the shortest.
-
Yeah, I too think it's the variety of music on offer in Waterworld that tips it for me.
-
This was quite difficult actually but I went for Waterworld for both.
Both films are stinkers. Both scores are great but Waterworld has the edge I think.

Give me a chance!

King Of Thieves ... true-story crime caper about the Hatton Garden robbery with quite the cast (Michael Caine, Jim Broadbent, Tom Courtenay, Ray Winstone, Paul Whitehouse, Michael Gambon and Francesca Annis). Amusing, but not without its darker moments (Broadbent is genuinely menacing at times, for example).
Yeah, he's a bastard in that.
It's one of several films made about the event. None of them are particularly good. This one is watchable at least. Once.

Me too. At first I didn't care for the main theme, but now I can't stop listening, specially the performances on "Young Raya and Namaari" and "Running on Raindrops".
Yeah, it's great isn't it!?
I also love the rendition that closes the final track, The New World, too... with that 'Treasure Planet-esque' brass flourish at the end.... which I madly wish led to something else.

I'm so glad Horner returned for this, at a time when he could have easily said no.
I much prefer this to the original. More action (The Train is an absolute showstopper of a cue) and a much superior recording... those castanets sound so crisp, and it just feels a bit more mature.

Why are JNH's fingers so short?
He's a notoriously fast worker. All that playing must take its toll on your hands.

If I remember rightly, a cue from this was performed at the WSA in 2012; one with quite prominent vocals ("The Execution"?). Gorgeous stuff.
