  1. The last time I felt truly excited about a release was when I first saw the trailer for The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring in late 2001. Pretty sure it was attached to the first Harry Potter film. That trailer genuinely gave me goosebumps.
  2. One of the best of his 'post-Titanic' era. Damn, he knew what a scene needed. That opening cue is stunning (despite being yet another version of the Sneakers motif, but I'm waaay over that now).
  3. Basically that it's a big exotic thematic score in the spirit of RAIDERS.
  4. New interview on Jon Burlingame's podcast. Talks mostly about RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON, and a little bit about what to expect from the upcoming JUNGLE CRUISE.
  5. Certainly went under my radar. Giving it a listen now... it's really quite lovely.
  6. I don't have the Dulux colour chart to hand but I call it 'Custard Cancer'.
  7. I really want the Star Trek: The Motion Picture book. But $50 for shipping!!! You can fuck right off.
  8. It’s a score that I enjoy more with each listen... he did a good job here. I’d like to see Howard work with Paul Greengrass more if he continues to make things of this sort. By the sounds of it they had a good working relationship.
  9. DAVID NEWMAN A beautiful, yet unsettling, score full of tragedy, like the film. Gorgeous main theme. Nice South-East Asian flavoured soundscapes. He actually sounds more like his brother Thomas on this one. Comparisons can be made to Mark Mancina's (also lovely) score for RETURN TO PARADISE which has a similar plot, from the year before.
  10. Or The Village, Part 2, as I prefer to call it. No, I jest. This is some lovely stuff. Really proves that JNH is capable of pretty much anything.
  11. I love THE HORSE WHISPERER. For all the reasons you mention. The theme that plays on horn in the cue Double Divide, and then later fleshed out in Montana breaks my heart. And then the centrepiece of The Rhythm Of The Horse. And everything in between. The atmospheric lonely Newman piano in There Was Snow and Simple Truths. Awww. I think this one also became a temp-track favourite. Just listen to AN UNFINISHED LIFE (2005)... both Christopher Young's rejected score and Deborah Lurie's replacement (though the latter is more Newman influenced).
  12. It was so mind-numbing, I'd forgotten about it until this thread bumped. Cheers. I hated every second of it. And I'm generally a big fan of Nolan.
  13. It's between the two for me. Even without mentioning the influence it had after, AMERICAN BEAUTY has some of the best marriage of picture and music in cinematic history.
  14. All of those are superb but, in my opinion, his magnum opus is ANGELS IN AMERICA (2003). Probably the best mix of his different styles (the dissonant, the 'quirky' rhythmic, and the piercingly beautiful sweeping stuff). The opening titles alone is worth the price. Check it out if you haven't already, I can't recommend it enough.
  15. Well that's good then. Which scores of his do you enjoy?
  16. His music is composed and mixed in a very particular way. One which sounds experimental and semi-improvised but is in fact incredibly, incredibly polished. I can understand why it wouldn't gel with some people, but you cannot deny its effectiveness... and influence.
  17. I've listened to a couple of pieces (there's no way I'm going through the whole thing... I don't hate myself that much), and it just sounds awful. No thanks.
  18. I’m too drunk to do this at the moment. But I will bombard this thread tomorrow.
  19. It's good however I do find that brass motif gets a little repetitive towards the end.
