Newman's magnum opus in my opinion.

Everything you've ever expected from Thomas Newman is in this score. The quirky, the rhythmic, the sparse piano thing that he does, the completely haunting lush strings and meandering woodwinds...

The Main Title is worth the price alone. What an utterly gorgeous piece of music. I can remember listening to it on repeat on my Sony Walkman walking to work every morning back in '04.

Anyway, I think this is the best thing he's ever done. Other scores of his have better individual cues (outside of the aforementioned) but as an overall work... this is sublime. I'm a huge Newman fan and I'd die to hear something of this quality from him again.

I'd go as far as putting it in my top 20 'Desert Island' scores of all time. It's that good.

Gives me fucking goosebumps every bloody time.

As a 90s child I remember the film well too. The score is very good - what a year 1995 was for Horner!

I'm even a fan of the song. I'm not just from the same city as the great Steve Winwood, but the same street!

    Balto (intrada) by James Horner
First time I listen to this score properly and it's such a beautiful one.
I recall loving watching the movie as a kid and listening to it bring me back so much memory. Rare are those forgotten score from movies I haven't seen in decade that I rediscover like that
Not Horner's most famous score but easily a top 10 for me too bad it's now OOP

Thank you for posting that theme analysis! I was already a huge fan of the score but that has done wonders for my understanding of it.

After listening to The Last Duel frequently, I was in the mood to revisit HGWs Kingdom of Heaven again. I know it tends to be fairly well regarded. Yet some didn’t connect with it. But after listening to the OST and then listening to the Recording sessions, it struck me how the original album really undercut the beautiful architecture of of HGWs score. Action set pieces were split up and scattered all over the album, negatively impacting the narrative flow. The RS have terrific highlights but are probably a bit too long to sit through. I decided to make a personal edit that combines the OST with selections from the RS in mostly chronological order into a suitably epic (but not too long) 75 minutes. It flows wonderfully and the development of his score really comes alive- leading the listener on an emotional and epic journey through the Medieval Europe and the Holy land. If you don’t mind the work (I actually enjoy making personal edits) It’s very rewarding and worth the effort.

Burning the Past (OST) Crusaders (OST) I am your Father (RS) After Godfrey (RS) Swordplay (RS) A New World (OST) To Messina (RS)/To Jerusalem(OST)
(*edited these two together. It’s a fantastic montage of music to encapsulate Bailin’s journey to Holy Land) Golgotha (OST “The King” 0:00-1:22) My Lord (RS) The King (OST “The King” 1:22-2:23) The Pilgrim Road (OST 0:00-2:20) Ibelin (OST) Sybila (OST) Caravan Road (OST “Wall Breached 1:11-END) Battle of Karak(OST) Terms (OST “The King” 2:23-END) Coronation (OST) Leprosy (OST “An Understanding” 0:00-1:58) Desert Thirst/To War (OST “Terms” 1:10-END) They Are Here (RS) Rise a Knight (OST)/Almerik’s Peerage (RS) (edited these together) Siege (Made this a combination of a couple different tracks - “A Better Man” (OST 0:00-1:23) “2nd Day of War” (RS) and “Wall Breached”(OST 0:00-1:18) Door Into Jerusalem (OST “An Understanding” 1:59-END) Wall Breached (RS) Everything (OST “Saladin” 2:15-END) Path to Heaven (OST) Light of Life (OST)* - I also added “Crusaders”(OST) to this just to bring things full circle. A nice little reprise. And then ended things with the short “Smell of Wood” (RS) cue that hauntingly restates the Ibelin theme:)
Feel free to use my custom cover (seen here). I also found this YouTube channel extremely helpful in understanding all the motifs and themes HGW created for the score (which ultimately got butchered by the Director of course) Check it out as well. Sorry for essay. Cheers!

Listening to APOLLO 13 again tonight, I was reminded how much I love those final moments of All Systems Go / The Launch, when everything has calmed down. The solo trumpet, then that rising harp/tremelo strings line with the softly cooing choir. So gorgeous and a lovely 'mini coda' to an otherwise epic cue.

Thank you for the comments on my theme analysis. This is the first time I've read them.

I wrote this seven years ago now... And in 2020 I had updated the text when the expanded edition came out:
    http://jameshorner-filmmusic.com/legends-of-the-fall-expanded-edition-our-exclusive-review/

I had fun to put logos for each theme and also I had made a commented tracklist which is visible here and downloadable in PDF format: https://www.patreon.com/posts/36204977

The B theme is indeed heard 10 times during the first hour of the movie. But it is completely absent during the second hour. It comes back only during the very last scene.

Yes, I think I'll agree with that.

Also.. a shoutout to the Re-entry & Splashdown cue:

As in the film, the first four minutes is literally waiting for something to happen, and Horner scores it beautifully. It's incredibly tense but also so so emotional. It could have been just four minutes of a tremolo string line keeping us waiting but he modulates and tempers so creatively and beautifully to keep the interest up, with that snare drum always there. And then the eventual release...

    APOLLO 13 - JAMES HORNER

My favourite Horner score. I don't listen to it often, for that reason. But I'm drunk, so I need it.

Many moments to behold. The lonely, plaintive opening version of the theme... and the glorious, full-blooded iterations in the final couple of cues. And all the stuff in between. The incredible The Launch, the thrilling Master Alarm (the best version of that particular structure he's used before), the haunting The Dark Side Of The Moon... it's all sublime.

One of the best Horner scores, and one of the best scores of the 90s. I love it.
