    APOLLO 13 - JAMES HORNER

My favourite Horner score. I don't listen to it often, for that reason. But I'm drunk, so I need it.

Many moments to behold. The lonely, plaintive opening version of the theme... and the glorious, full-blooded iterations in the final couple of cues. And all the stuff in between. The incredible The Launch, the thrilling Master Alarm (the best version of that particular structure he's used before), the haunting The Dark Side Of The Moon... it's all sublime.

One of the best Horner scores, and one of the best scores of the 90s. I love it.

Listening to VERTICAL LIMIT by James Newton Howard...

It's a tiny little moment but I love this subtle chord change, with strings, in the final cue It's A Good Song (1:13)...

JNH is great at making lovely chord changes but this one is a favourite. It's just a great segue from a Cmaj into an inverted Bb(add2).

Martin Campbell should direct every Bond's first outing. That should just be a given.

Yes but at least The Last Airbender has the value of being unintentionally hilarious. Same with The Happening.

I agree. For a composer who is generally uninterested in scoring action films I think Newman wrote some pretty engaging action music. The opening chase in Skyfall is brilliantly scored IMO.

I wouldn't be behind a solo JNH collaboration with Nolan. Look at all the projects JNH has been doing lately... lots of big, melodic, old-fashioned loveliness. Save the dour Nolan projects for Zimmer and the rest.

Just discovered that on Spotify. This is really a collection of brillant and beautiful soundtrack suites. I must confess, I know none of the films or TV shows conciously. But the music is wonderful.

Nanny McPhee at the Big Bang (JNH) - Forgot how enjoyable this is; charming main theme, some broad and entertaining action writing and plenty of more whimsical moments. Won't say I wasn't a bit disappointed that Patrick Doyle wasn't brought back as his score for the original is terrific, but a more than worthy follow up.

An underrated score from Newman, I think. It’s mostly born from his quirky rhythmic stylings but in a mature context. Colour me a fan.

You might be right but I still need to digest this score a bit more. Those cues I mentioned stick out though.

The action writing is superb though, I agree. On par with King Kong and The Waterhorse, which contain my favourite ‘recent’ fully orchestral action music from Howard.

Also, like most have mentioned… how fantastic is it to have a score like this in a film-world dominated by Zimmer???

I’ll answer for you. It’s superb.

People over at FSM are complaining that it‘s too much of a Williams pastiche. That’s the whole point!  Piss off.

i really like this. Yes, it’s a very ‘busy’ score but there’s a great deal to like here.

Again, the action music is top notch. It’s fantastic even. I would love to have witnessed this being recorded.
