geom_00 got a reaction from Jurassic Shark in "John Williams in His Adventure on Earth" - Biography by Tim Greiving
One more Parody Title:
John Williams: Everyone else was dead
*DUCKS AND RUNS* (Please don't ban me)
In all seriousness: Will this be available on Audiobook? I am an AVID audiobook listener, easily listening to 30-50 books a year due to a VERY long commute to work. If it IS made into an audiobook, would it be able to include snippets of the songs themself?
I recently listened to Jon Meacham's and Tim McGraw's book: Songs of America. While it was a fascinating listen, I was a little saddened there were no actual examples of the songs they were talking about.
I know this might not be an option...but I wanted to at least ask.
Thank you, @Maestro for all your work on this book! My wife and I are both HUGE Williams' fans, and we will both be anticipating this book with outstretched fists containing money for you to take!

geom_00 got a reaction from Brando in John Williams Writes New Theme for ESPN College Football Championship - OF GRIT AND GLORY
I came into work today, and my coworker/supervisor asked me if I watched the game. I replied, "The only part of it I was interested in was the 4:00 debuting a new John Williams piece."
Yes, I was in every band you can think of in high school. How can you tell?

geom_00 reacted to Disco Stu in Olympic Fanfare and Theme - New Jazz Arrangement by Miho Hazama
Modern big band is a particular interest of mine as I think there are leaders/arrangers working in that space that are pushing jazz forward in really cool and innovative ways. It's not just a scene for slick, toothless throwback swing/bebop bands, there are people like Alan Ferber, John Hollenbeck, Christopher Zuar, Ted Nash, Dafnis Prieto, etc. etc. that are doing interesting things with big band music.
Anyway, every year I take a look at the Grammy nominees for Best Large Ensemble Jazz Album to see what albums I might have missed over the last year. Hazama's album was nominated, I hadn't heard of it before, and I was very surprised to see the Olympic piece on the tracklist when I looked it up to stream it!

geom_00 reacted to Trumpeteer in New Podcast! The Baton: A John Williams Musical Journey
I am very excited about the newest episode in my podcast, because it features a discussion of the best score ever written: "The Empire Strikes Back".
I am joined on this episode by Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra trombonist Jim Nova, who helps me understand why Vader's theme is so sinister. We also talk about that stellar music during the asteroid field chase, the big lightsaber battle in the bowels of Cloud City and whether or not the score would translate into a great musical. Learn much in this episode, you will!

Oof, can you imagine the conversation when they get home.
"Hey honey, how was work?"
"Baby, you should sit down.....I...I lost my job today."
"What!? You've been working there for six years, and Bob Iger has sent you personal cards every single Christmas thanking you for all your hard work! Hell, he's invited you to the golf tournaments three years in a row! What could you possibly have done to get yourself fired!?"
"I...I..."
"Spit it out, you--"
"I uploaded the For Your Consideration soundtrack for Star Wars on the official website one week in advance."
"............
You son of a bitch, you were messing around with that secretary we met last Christmas party weren't you?! Don't lie to me!"

As you can imagine I heard the Messiah’s most known melody, the “Hallelujah” chorus, more than once as it is widely used. But today when I heard the whole Hallelujah piece, only then did I realize the majesty and magnificence of the piece. One of if not the best choral work in history. Maybe the best religious piece of music of all time.

geom_00 got a reaction from Cerebral Cortex in Why don't we ever see Wilson's mouth on Home Improvement?
I read somewhere that:
Tim always looked up to his next door neighbor when he was younger. But, he could never see over the fence and see his whole face. So, Wilson is just a visual gag on that.

geom_00 got a reaction from Josh500 in The power of John Williams: The Map Room without music
Last year at the Hollywood Bowl concert, Spielberg came out for the second half as JW's guest.
He went on to tell stories about working with JW. One of the things he talked about is what scenes were like without music.
His example was the first five minutes of The Last Crusade. The music really does make a difference.

geom_00 got a reaction from The Illustrious Jerry in What is the last piece of classical music you listened to?
I was watching a video on YouTube about making decorative candles. (It's what one does at 4:30 AM). ANYWAY, The had the 1812 Overture playing as the artist worked on the candle.
Now, The 1812 is one of the pieces that got me (then a young kid) into classical music. I mean... CANNONS. So I'm listening to it, just about ready to geek out to the finale, and it stops dead.
So, here's what I listened to last, with a link to one of my favorite recordings of it. Conducted by the late, great, Erich Kunzel.

geom_00 reacted to Arpy in John Williams at Gustavo Dudamel's induction into the Hollywood Walk of Fame
I think JW is more interested in leaving a different kind of legacy than a bit of pavement, like the support of educational and performance facilities in LA and that Hollywood respects the musicians as well as the actors, filmmakers etc.
