  1. For the performances of this LTP concert prior to February 2023, the audience didn't hear Prince's 'Scandulous' coming out of the concert-hall's house speakers over the remaining portion of the end-credits .  Instead, additional music was performed, live, over that footage.

Now, the new owner of this LTP concert-rental, TCG, has already removed the live-choir.  I am wondering if their version that was being used in the venues since last February will keep the additional music for the end-credits or will they do one the following:

    • Remove the concert's end-credits version and replace it with the film-version's end credits then do a needle drop of 'Scandulous'.
    • Not play 'Scandulous' and just end the concert with the performance of the film-version's end credits-cue and just let the audience leave as the remaining credit-roll finish.

Here is the lastest schedule for TCP's 'Batman' LTP concert. The yellow highlights are the new dates added.

  2. With this year marking the 50th anniversary of the start of the Spielberg/Williams film collaboration, I wonder if FCL will put a another movie from their collabortion into an LTP concert this year.

If they have zero chance of doing any of the 'Indiana Jones' films, they might do 'War of the Worlds" (2005), or 'The Lost World' (for the latter, I hope it will have a live rhythm section and not go with a pre-recording).

I would be open to 'Minority Report', but it is a co-production of Fox, which is now Disney's property, so with their live-music arm--Disney Concerts--no way that Disney is going to give that away to anyone.

Yes, it is different? Although it does use JW's arrangements, that is a stage production, not an LTP concert.

This may have been what Jay was talking about earlier.

BTW, there's a great episode of The Legacy of John Williams podcast where Andy Einhorn talks about how they got sheet music prepared for a stage production using the film's adaptation as a basis.  I wonder if these new LTP concerts used that as a starting point

Anyways, this credit from the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is a dead giveaway that it is not an LTP concert:

For those of you who use the website, Movies in Concert, to see what film-music concerts are playing nearest you: don’t count on the site listing any performance schedules of ‘Fiddler on the Roof’.  The site doesn’t list live-action musicals like, Mary Poppins or the film-versions of West Side Story; but they list animated musicals, like Beauty and the Beast or Aladdin.

Film Concerts Live! does list performance schedules of their rentals, but they have a bad reputation of not listing them as soon as the venues/orchestras start selling tickets of the FCL concerts on their websites.  FCL does get around to listing them much later, but when that happens, all the good seats are taken.  For example, on FCL’s web-pages of Home Alone and Raiders, I don’t see the listings of these rentals that will be used by the National Concert Hall in Dublin, Ireland (that @Incanusgratuitously reported to us).Perhaps, Citi Light Concerts in Switzerland may be quick to book ‘Fiddler’.  They just did the LTP concert of Chicago (2002) a few weeks ago.

So, if any of you know a venue that is doing this concert, please share that info, here.

It looks like the website, Movies In Concert, had a change of heart by listing this LTP concert of the live-action movie-musicial in their site.

So, you guys can start looking out for future, yet early-posting, bookings of this concert on that said site.

  7. Here are some brief videos from that Pittsburgh concert that are interesting to examine.

In this one, we hear Reeve say the word, 'Lois', where it wasn't heard in the final sound-mix from the theatrical cut.

This video raises the question I have to those who attended the previous LTP concerts.
The music heard over this shot...
    Temp.png
...is the same as heard in the theatrical cut. (footage in question is all cued-up in the link)

    In these very next shots...
    Concert shots.png
...there was no music in the final sound-mix of the theatrical cut, however, they are scored in this concert version.  The music used over the above footage for the concert is the final 16 seconds of 'Rescue of Jimmy'-13M4

(audio portion in question is all cued-up in the link)

Now, in the final sound-mix of the theatrical cut, this same portion of the 13M4-cue was used over these shots, just before Superman begins stopping the water flow with mountain boulders.
    Superman Shots.jpg
Here is that footage from the theatrical cut here (it is all cued-up in the link)

Now, here is my question .  In the LTP concert version, would this said final portion of 13M4 be played again for the above footage or was a different portion of the score used, or no music at all?

Subscribers of FSM Online will be able to experience some of the key moments from this concert as exclusive videos. The new issue will be out in a few days.

Any FSM Subscribers can tell us if they have received exclusive videos of 'key moments' from Superman, which was done at that very same hall as this one last summer.

I know nothing about these sort of technical matters, but how much extra work is need to do the isolated score?  It strikes me as an inexpensive feature that should be part of most releases.  Is it a perceived lack of audience interest that prevents it?

    It is not just technical.

I am thinking that one aspect in making this possible is that the musicians that performed the score for the film have to sign-off on this, as they are members of the musicians union--The American Federation of Musicians.  I'm betting that in order to do that, they would want to be financially compensed.

  10. Back in the spring, I said that Disney Concerts couldn't make LTP concerts of remaining Indiana Jones film (except 'DoD) because of this...

I may be wrong in thinking Disney Concerts can do anything about producing LTP concerts of the released Indiana Jones films—TOD, TLC, and TKCS.  What I’m about to say are just theories based on facts.

My reason is that Paramount Pictures still owns the distribution rights (showing a film at a theatre, TV broadcast, home video, streaming, etc) to these said films, while Disney owns the music-score rights of these films--Bantha Music is the publisher of the Lucasfilm music-scores and Disney owns Lucasfilm.  So, Disney Concerts can’t do the LTP concerts of these films without the license from Paramount to show the films at the concert halls, amphitheaters, etc. and, apparently, Paramount isn't playing ball with them.

Then these facts started coming up.

On May 31,this year, weeks before the release of DoD, Disney began streaming the Indy films on their platform, Disney+.  Paramount stills owns the distribution rights to these films, which includes streaming, so Disney would have had to have gotten permission from Paramount to do that.  This article from the Hollywood Reporter reveals that this limited feature was the result of an 'updated rights deal' between the two studios.

Then during the summer, I noticed the Raiders LTP-concert rental, which was created by a 3rd-party concert-production company prior to Disney's acquistion of Lucasfilm, began showing up on Disney Concerts' website.  In addition, orchestras and venues were promoting their presenting the rental on websites and social media displaying Disney Concerts' ownership--their logo and/or copyright notice.

This portion of the image interests me.

So, does that mean, from here on end, if an orchestra wants to do a rental of the ROTLA LTP concert, they have to go to Disney Concerts and not to Film Concerts Live!, anymore?

For posterity, here is a page of a digital program from a July 2023 concert of the ROTLA LTP from the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra where it reads that the rental is 'produced by Film Concerts Live!'

    sample 4.png

Here is a page from the Pacific Symphony Orchestra's digital program from last August's Raiders LTP concert that has the Disney Concerts logo.

Here are some other images from other orchestras/venues using the Raiders LTP-concert rental from Disney where their Disney Concerts logo and/or copyright notice are displayed.

    Raiders - Germany.png

    Raiders-Indiana.pngRaiders Tucson.png

Could this be part of this 'updated rights deal'?

Based on these facts, one could draw the conclusion that there is a possibility that Disney, through the live-music arm of Disney Concerts, may handle the LTP-concerts of the remaining Indiana Jones film.

I'm curious about the 'other' horror movie scores that will be performed.

The updated description of this concert from the Kennedy Center’s website-via the said link--reads this, “Hosted by Giacchino, the evening begins with soundtracks and clips from Psycho, The Phantom of the Opera, Coco, The Batman, Bride of Frankenstein, and other iconic classics.”

NSO has really been doing a great job with film music concerts lately.  The Star Wars saga one was amazing.

What you speak of was prior to the pandemic.  Yeah, during the 21-22 season, the Kennedy Center had 4 LTP concerts--Up, Black Panther, Jurassic Park and ET, but in the 22-23 season, all they had was one--Frozen, and this season they have 2--this concert and Disney's The Sound of Magic.  I feel that the KC has not been very aggressive in booking more LTP concerts in the past seasons.  With that being said, the KC has been known to add concerts to the schedule while a season is in progress, so we'll have to see.

Here is how supportive Disney is in this film.  In this post from Disney Concerts’ Facebook page is a list of their LTP concerts that are being performed at USA venues this month.  Werewolf is nowhere on it.

  13. This article published on Sept 29 discusses Giacchino's interest in having the whole movie in color and maybe 3D.

I wonder if this color version will appear in any of the LTP concerts this month.

Screening of color version will happen on October 15 in North Hollywood.
