Both not sure about yet. Maybe some of these become clearer after seeing the episode.
Some moments from previous episodes became clearer after seeing it as well.

Not familiar with that, but we all have scores we listen to sorta "secretly" that way. I remember playing BAD GIRLS once, and someone came into my room in a collective I lived in, saw the CD cover proudly displayed on the speaker and wondered WTF I was listening to. Not because of the music (well, that too), but because of the cover and the film's title. Another incident was when I played, I think it was one of McNeely's TINKERBELL scores, this time on my computer, and again someone saw it and was shocked to see me listening to feminine/"kiddie stuff".

For as hard as it is for someone to understand our desire to listen to film music, sometimes it gets augmented by the strange titles we listen to, just because the music is good, not necessarily because we have any kind of connection to the film or TV show.

    The Killer - Marco Beltrami

One of the more plain fun scores of Beltrami's career. There's a really nice main theme in the opening track which he puts through a few great variations in the action cues.
The action cues are funky, with lot's of drums, guitar & brass. There's some sulky string writing, big orchestral outburst and even some whistling and vocals reminiscent of Morricone. It's almost like his take on a Bond or Mission: Impossible film. Great stuff.

Is there anything recurring about the melody in Forgiveness Takes An Age? Something about it feels familiar, especially the bit at 1:15.

Might just be that it's a really beautiful standalone piece, hence OST-worthy. Bear's choral writing is really quite something in the first half.

I'm also finding the forging rings theme is becoming a classic for me - up there with the Ark theme and other Williams classics. Insanely memorable and a perfect evocation of pure evil.

Nice catch!  Added to my episode 2 breakdown.  I knew there had to be something to that long passage, but just couldn't remember the B part of Sauron's theme.  Now that I've spent more time with the concert arrangement, its easier to hear.

My Name Is Not Halbrand is quickly becoming one of my favorite tracks!

You might be right.  Elrond's theme plays from 1:30-1:34, then from 1:35-48 sounds like it could be a variant of Galadriel's theme?  Maybe they are both in this scene together?

Good catch, it does sound like Númenór, though warped a bit (just like Valinor is warped at the start of the track)

This is another favourite cue of mine from the score:

I really love how the track opens with an eerie sense of mystery, wonder, and uncertainty, brimming with awe but just unsettling enough to know that something is not right. It then rises to a dramatic and sinister crescendo, followed by silence to underscore the impact of the giant meteor falling into the ocean. The action music that follows, with the thundering percussion and powerful horns, is among the finest JNH has ever written IMO.

I love the Aladar and Neera love theme:

This track is incredibly powerful and emotional, just JNH at the peak of his orchestral powers:

Like The Egg Travels, this cue should be among the top 10 cues JNH ever wrote. I don't know if I love the Lion King-inspired first part or the more reflexive second part more, both are sooooo good.

The Egg Travels is still in my Top 3 JNH cues and seeing it live with him conducting a few years back was phenomenal. So special.

CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO | A TRIBUTE TO DOUGLASS FAKE - INTRADA RECORDS

In this episode, CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO pays tribute to a genuine soundtrack hero and pioneer… Intrada Records founder, Douglass Fake, who passed away at the age of 72 on July 13, 2024.

Who was Douglass Fake? Well, one of Doug’s closest friends and colleagues, Joe Sikoryak, wrote a beautiful obituary a few days after Doug’s passing on Facebook.

    LINK: https://bit.ly/3MsfPgA

I personally never met Doug, but I did communicate with him and Roger Fiegelson, Intrada’s executive producer, many times when requesting albums to play on my soundtrack show, which began in 1996. Doug and the rest of the crew at Intrada have been supporting the show for over 25 years, and I do remember Doug telling me that if I ever needed anything, I should call or email him or Roger and they’d send whatever I requested down immediately. It didn’t matter if it was a new release or a release that came out ten years ago; if they had it in stock, they’d send it down.

We planned to release this episode a few weeks ago but a few things popped up that slowed down production (work and illnesses). On top of that, the fine folks at Intrada Records were guests on Robert Emmett’s soundtrack radio program “The Norman Bates Memorial Soundtrack Show,” where they produced their own three-hour tribute show to Doug on Saturday, August 24, 2024. So, not to step on any toes, I decided to delay the release of my own tribute show today.

So, on today’s show, we’ll be playing not only selections from Intrada’s extensive soundtrack library, but also messages of remembrance from fans such as Amer Zahid, Chris Malone, Ian Clark, Jason Drury, Jim Wilson, Nick Zwar, Lee Wileman, and Victor Field.

Doug was a legend in the soundtrack community and we owe him a debt of gratitude for bringing much joy into our lives. Thank you, Doug. You will be missed.

    Enjoy the show!

10 reasons to love this score:

    1. best mickeymousing job ever done in a Disney film
    2. best JW-style love theme not by JW
    3. Courtship
    4. Breakout
    5. Across the Desert
    6. the damn Egg Travels
    7. main / hope theme
    8. herd theme
    9. asteroid motif
    10. The slapping end credits suite

I have probably written this many times before, but the film is my only childhood favourite that stood the test of time for me, thanks to its premise, visuals, and music.

A visceral post-apocalyptic tale dedicated to highlighting compassion as a risky but worthwhile aspect of leadership, filled with beautiful natural vistas and uncommonly noble music?

How many films for kids are there with this specific lesson and panache?

Sure, it's probably a predictable pile of garbage for the unfriendly neighbourhood nihilist, and a ticket price loss for that specific cohort of people misled 24 years ago by a trailer to expect an Animal Planet documentary.

But I think it is actually not too shabby for what might have been the most expensive film per minute ever at the time. It's a picture that a film megacorp of today would not have the brains (or cojones) to make.

An expansion of the score was long overdue.

As the director said (paraphrasing) "James probably should have gotten a writing credit".

I actually love the Damrod material. Bear’s willingness to mix unconventional sounds with conventional orchestra is what drew me to his work back in the BSG days. Admittedly, the first time I heard it, I was so taken aback that I did not like it, but, after spending more time with the season album, I think it kicks ass.

Watched the first three, and for me episode 2 is the runaway highlight, musically - pretty much any of it could've gone on the season album. Episode 1 has some really good highlights, but a tad overreliance on Sauron's theme for my liking.

I think an issue Bear had with episode 3 is that there's an awful lot of dialogue scenes that either don't have music or really don't need anything particularly notable. Hence when you do his usual trimming, losing short cues, etc, you're left with barely more than a half hour of music, and most of that is reprisals of existing themes. Hardly surprising therefore that, the Estrid concert piece aside, just 7 minutes from this episode are on the season album - the really interesting, new music is elsewhere.

Construction-wise, there seems to be a little more in the way of trimming starts and ends of cues this season but I reckon that in the overall scope of the work, we've still got 90-95% of the music and so far I've not noticed anything essential missing. (and given the show thus far, I'm not likely to be rewatching much of it)

I noticed this theme in The Staff, then Battle for Eregion, but given Bear's tendency to join things together I think it's way more likely to be connected to Celebrimbor in some way than the Stranger. The bit in My Name is not Halbrand sounds like a hint of the first part. I really like it so I hope that we're going to hear a lot more of it - the later episode albums could be real smashers, particularly with the extended battle pieces. I wonder if this will be a bit like RotK, where the album has some bits here and there, but the CRs opened up the massive scale of what Shore had written for Minas Tirith.

I actually didn't think much of the Eregion theme when I first heard it, but some things just take a few moments to grow, and now I love it along with Estrid's theme. It was a perfect move from Bear to put the concert arrangements for both on the season album, given it's barely cameo'd so far in the show.

I just listened to the album for the immersive story again, and it's definitely a better listening experience than the season 2 album. It feels much more coherent, has multiple ideas and motifs repeated throughout and is really exciting. There's even multiple quotes of the music from season 1, be it direct quotes or little snippets. It's actually really well done.

It's still such a shame about the Season 2 album, because all the episodes had such amazing music in them and they someohow made sure the album showed none of that greatness. So weird.
