dylanskie got a reaction from dyemery in Netflix's One Piece (Live Action 2023) - Sonya Belousova & Giona Ostinelli
I hardly even noticed the score until the track at the start of episode 5, "Let's Disappear," when I could pick out the main theme. At first, it all seemed way too overdone, but it has grown on me so much since then. I really love all the variations of the main theme, especially in "Gotta Feed the Brain" and "Wanted Dead or Alive." If Sonya and Giona don't work on the second season, it'll surely go downhill like what happened to The Witcher.

I love the second half of "Only I Will Remain." It sounds like light to me, which is interesting because I think that theme is meant to be foreboding and convey destruction. But the variation in that track doesn't do that for me.

To carry on @WampaRat’s thematic glossary I put together a thematic breakdown of the score as well as the chronological order. I’ve seen the film three times now and honestly it’s one of the best things I’ve watched in a long time. In combination with Part One I’d say this is a 10/10 movie.

    RETURNING THEMES/MOTIFS

    Dune Main Theme -
I’ll be classifying the four-note theme as the “A” theme and the eight-note theme as the “B” theme to stay consistent. When both play at once I’ll refer to it as the main theme.

    Fate/“The One” Theme -
This theme is extremely underplayed on album. The theme in this film basically becomes Jessica’s after she… changes. It’s played on woodwinds quite a lot as she enacts her plans. There is a major missing variation of this theme that plays towards the end of the film. It has the Kwisatz Haderach motif as a counterpoint. I’m sure this will be on the FYC album.

    Vast Mystery/Wonder Chords -
Sadly this motif takes a backseat in this score. It plays a select couple times but doesn’t nearly have the presence it did in the first film.

    Tragic Noble Theme -
Another theme that is diluted this time around. It has a great appearance at the end of “Only I Will Remain” but that track doesn’t actually play during the film only the credits.

    Impending Doom Motif -
Although not actually appearing as much as it did in the first film, this motif makes a major impact on the film by playing in select important scenes relating to Paul’s dark future or even the darker actions he takes here.

    Sorrow/Loss Motif -
Sadly not featured on the album but there is a track in the film that features this motif. It plays twice and both times relates to how the Bene Gesserit prophecy is taking over the Fremen and leading them to war. Hopefully this track will be on FYC album.

    House Atreides/Paul and Chani’s Love Theme -
This theme goes from barely being featured in the first film to becoming the main theme of the second. It evolves from the bagpipe power anthem for House Atreides to a beautiful woodwind/Blade Runner-esque love theme for Paul and Chani.

Bene Gesserit Seduction Motif/Feyd Rautha Motif -
This motif was originally featured on the second half of the track, “Song of the Sisters” from the sketchbook album. It was then developed menacingly into the six-note Feyd Rautha Motif now heard in this film.

    Bene Gesserit Whispers/Chant

    Arrakis Drum Motif

    Harkonnen Screech

    Harkonnen Clang

    Fremen Chimes -
This is a new motif that I noticed upon rewatching both films. It’s like a small little chime march that appears when characters are walking through the rocky terrain of the Sietches. It has a big appearance that’s not on the new album but it’s when…

    (Stillsuits - 1:55)

    NEW THEMES/MOTIFS

    Kwisatz Haderach Motif -
New dark three-note cello motif for the culmination of the Bene Gesserit breeding process; the Kwisatz Haderach. Also has a drum rhythm behind it. Blares loud in theaters and often acts as a counterpoint to other main themes. It represents both Paul and Feyd as they’re both prospects for the Kwisatz Haderach.

    (Harkonnen Arena - 4:48)
    (Travel South - 0:06)
    (Arrival - 0:00)
    (You Fought Well - 0:12)

    The Emperor’s Motif -
Loud and grand motif that represents the emperor of the known universe. Features choir and some brass which most of Dune doesn’t have.

I watched seasons 1 and 2 before reading the books, then read all three and watched season 3 knowing what would happen and how everything fit together. Before reading the books, the show seemed completely random to me, so I'd say the books definitely help fill in the gaps and make it easier to understand the impact of certain things in the show. I definitely recommend reading them if you have any interest in the series as a whole

The Droughtlander podcast he was on suggested that for Outlander, his team are to some extent there to handle short-term, or 'unexpected' musical needs, and to help out when revisions are needed or suddenly they need 15 minutes of music they didn't need before.

He does talk also about certain 'important' cues needing time to get them right, and so if deadlines are approaching, maybe he has to give other portions of that episode to someone else to allow him to concentrate.

He typically uses 2-5 additional composers for each project according to what I've seen on IMDB (except for TROP). Not sure about the workload distribution though

I just listened to the last scene of episode 1 and realized that the Targaryen theme insert that was excluded from The Prince That Was Promised is most likely a pitch-shifted section of Breaker of Chains (from GOT season 4). I'm not sure how I missed that when I first watched the episode!

"The Rogue Prince" is comprised of three different sections of two different cues: one section from the "heir for a day" scene with Daemon in the brothel/bar, and two sections from the following cue where Viserys tells Daemon that he's named a new heir. Both of these cues are in that video of the score for the first episode if you want to use those to edit

The Rogue Prince 0:00-0:12 = "a new heir" cue 0:00-0:12
The Rogue Prince 0:12-0:36 = "heir for a day" cue 0:42-1:06
The Rogue Prince 0:36-end = "a new heir" cue 0:12-end

Yeah, there are some small important cues sadly not released, the ones I miss the most being the variations on Viserys' Theme during the royal hunt in episode 3, and also some variations on Rhaenyra's themes, especially the one at the beginning of episode 6, where she is walking through the castle right after giving birth. But I'm not complaining since this such a huge release, and the most important cues are definitely here.

My favorite theme has to be Rhaenyra's Rebellious theme, and I love the variations on the theme during the last episode, where it joins one of the other themes for her, and the Heir Theme, which is also one of my favorites! And I love that little motif that pops through all of episode 9 (Fate of the Seven Kingdoms), especially when I realized that is was used for Larys in episode 6, making a connection with how Larys' actions lead to Aegon's coronation.

I've done a more detailed chronological tracklist for the whole season. Some cues are made out of several smaller cues, like how Interests of the Realm comprises three different cues from the same episode, or how Trouble in the Step Stones is made out of (I think) three different cues from episodes 2 and 3.
Some cues are longer than what appears in the episode (like for example A Warning), and there's one piece which I cannot locate, the second half of Compromise and Consequences, starting at 1:25. The first part plays when Otto travels to Dragonstone to face Daemon in episode 2, and I though the rest was the music that plays when Rhaenyra arrives, but it's not the same, so I don't know where that would fit. Perhaps from latter in the season? I'm not entirely sure, so feel free to correct me.

I didn't liste the main titles but it plays at the beginning of every episode except for the first one. Also, that first episode plays the track A Song of Ice and Fire from S8 of GoT in the end credits.

I didn't see a breakdown of Street Musicians in either thread:

    0:00-0:39
Episode 3, 31:52-32:31, when Halbrand drinks with Numenoreans. Chronologically between To the Hall of Lore and The Successor

    0:39-2:12
Episode 3, 51:09-52:42, when Isildur, Eärien, and Elendil drink and talk together. Chronologically between We Wait for You and Both Our Bloodlines
Also reused in Episode 4, 35:00-35:48, when Eärien and Kemen bump into each other. Same music from episode 3

    2:12-2:45
Couldn't find this short cue, I thoroughly searched through all episodes this morning, either I missed it or it went unused. I'll listen for it when I rewatch the season soon. It's a solo fiddle which suggests it's either for the Southlands or the Harfoots

    2:45-end
Episode 6, 54:24-55:16, post-battle celebration. Chronologically at 6:29 in Transformed by Darkness

On a separate note, interesting that Halbrand's/the Southlands theme in Transformed by Darkness was originally played on a fiddle (heard on the album) but changed to a cello (heard in the episode) according to Bear's third blog. I think the cello works much better there and wish that was the version he released!

What’s “normal”?  You’re a great parent, giving your child an extra capacity for learning and empathy. Everyone else is doing it wrong.

I love it. As an educator who has worked with probably in the hundreds of thousands of children over my career, I say your child is asking awesome  questions, and working out complex correlations of music to storytelling in their young mind.  Good job to both of you!

I'm just happy if I can find someone to talk about film music with in person! But yeah, so many people would just group all film composers together in one category even though there are many different styles.

Somewhat related to your topic. A friend was over at my house recently and they asked me what my kids were going to think when they become school age and realized that is wasn't normal to listen to film scores.

This crosses my mind quite a bit. My 5 year old is already very familiar with films scores thanks to Dad lol. He LOVES “My First Bus ride” from Mummy Returns. He’s always asking “What’s this one from Dad? Whats happening in this part?”

But related to the topic, I get that vibe sometimes from other score nerds if I say I like Zimmer’s stuff:
“Oh…you like Zimmer..*I didn’t know I was better than you*” haha. But yes. Generally I’m just happy to encounter anyone who enjoys scores.

Bear answered a question that was very similar to that one in this video from 9:22 to 11:44 (he gives a general answer not exclusive to the scoring process for Outlander but I hope he goes more in depth in his blogs)
