Are you talking about samples, or about notation software? For the latter, Rosegarden seems to be the preferred Linux application, though I never quite figured it out.
Basically, I want something I can run MIDI's through and have it not sound like complete garbage. Something at least approaching realistic. I'll look into that Rosegarden program. Thanks for the suggestion.

Does anyone know if there are any virtual orchestra programs available that are free? Preferably open source, although would not have to be.
Or if none free, do any offer a fully working 30 day demo?

Well, the first clip my brother and I heard on tv - before knowing anything about it - and were like "wow, that piece is so awesome, it sounds almost like a Williams piece." And, low and behold, we later found out we were right.

Ah, I got it working now. It seems like my quicktime is giving trouble. When I actually tried to download it as opposed to just listening it worked fine.

I don't get it. everyone's talking about these three full pieces. When I click on the little audio symbol, all I get is one 5 second clip. What are you guys doing that I'm not?

As long as you're just doing it for fun and not making any money from it there shouldn't be a problem. If you're making a profit, then you might have to secure permission.

I was just curious for how many of you John Williams is your absolute favorite composer, as opposed to just another really good composer.

I can't stand it when people say there are no absolutes. Think about it, that statement in itself is being made as an absolute. "There are absolutely no absolutes."
It's like when Obi-wan calls himself a Sith by saying "only a Sith deals in absolutes" when that itself was an absolute statement.

It is DEFINITELY NOT the same recording. It's the exact same music, but it was recorded twice.

they are definitely different. They go at slightly different tempos. (MM being a little slower at the start, but finishing first)
The timpani section at the start is MUCH stronger in the MM version. The rest kind of goes back and forth between which is more dynamic.

Yes, Buckbeak's Flight has become one of my top favorites of William's pieces. I have not noticed a difference between the two versions before, but I suppose the one in MM may have just been performed with a little more enthusiasm.

I haven't heard a lot of William's concert work, but I've liked what I've heard. BTW, anyone know where I can find a recording (official, concert bootleg, or even a midi) of concerto for trumpet and orchestra. I have the sheet music, but am finding it a bit difficult to learn without hearing it at all first. I'm not very good at hearing music in my head just by looking at the notes.

Ah, I see. Thanks for the link. I think I'll try and find a non-CD-R if possible though. Now I know exactly what to look for though.
Edit: Bingo! Found it on eBay. Listing says it's a pressed CD. Thanks for the help!
