ragoz350 got a reaction from fommes in RESTORED ISOLATED SCORE: Star Wars Saga (Unused Music Restored To Picture)
Ok, Attack of the Clones...
I only recently realized that the cue 6M5 "Padme Falls" (the end of track "Love Pledge and the Arena") has 3 versions at once, since 2 inserts with a Force theme were written for it (it seems, with the exception of Across the Stars, this is the only case in the prequel trilogy). I tried to figure them out...
In the first version (original, without inserts) there is one more rendition of Love theme (during the dialogue between Anakin and Obi-Wan), and then a sudden "chorale" with a funny counterpoint of trumpets and oboes/clarinets, which underscores the dialogue between Yoda and the commander:
A sync video of my mockup, although I'm not sure the dialogue hasn't been re-filmed since JW wrote the score...
The first insert (used in OST) includes new renditions of the Force theme. It is the same length as the original piece.
And the second insert (sounds in the film, borrowed from @Manakin Skywalker) is actually an extended version of the previous insert (the first rendition with a different orchestration and increased length, also the last bar of insert is played twice). It is noteworthy that the increased length was still not enough for the final cut, so the previous fragment in the film is slightly looped (in this video I still cut the shots)...

Returning to the prequels for a while...
some small detail...
I listened to "Are You a Jedi" from TPM a lot, and I didn't think that there might be any editing here, although this cue is a little slowed down in the film.
When I was looking at the score, I noticed one bar, which is absent on the recording (users on this board have probably known about this for a long time), where the general elegiac mood for a short moment gives way to a more playful one.
Honestly, it's difficult to understand whether this place was missed during the recording process, or cut out later. Anyway, I think it syncs with Anakin's objection to Shmi, ("Watto doesn't know I've built it...").
In the video, I had to cut out a pause in the dialogue, it seems that it matches better (marked it with b/w transition), although it is certainly not easy to find synchronization points here (for example, the cor anglais melody might have been intended for a longer shot with Shmi, who knows...)
If this really was editing, then this is perhaps the most "wise" editing in the entire film, the cue feeling some different way...

One thought I had is that perhaps instead of the scene ending with the Oracle sinking back under the lake, there could have been a shot/shots of Kylo walking toward the castle instead, before reaching the wayfinder. I'm not sure if it would work, but the ending does look and sound alright:

EDIT: Also this is pretty far off, just going by what's in the film and on the album, but I noticed that The Nursery fits quite well if the star destroyer shots are removed. I also had to lob off a bit of the beginning, so it's just a wild guess.

So, I've been curious about how the Oracle would have fit into the Mustafar scenes. There's actually two quite different versions of the scene in the novelizations: the Rae Carson novelization has a longer version featuring Hux and Pryde and with more dialog between the Oracle and Kylo, and Kylo wades into the pond the Oracle appears in to find the Wayfinder on some kind of island or platform in the middle.
In the junior novelization, the Oracle talks to Kylo, but he never says a word in return. The Wayfinder is instead in Vader's castle or at least the ruins of it. There's also a confrontation between Kylo and his stormtroopers and the cultists before the battle breaks out.
I'm basing this restoration on the junior novelization version, since it seems to fit better with the unused music. I believe the majority of this music is 1M15 Vader's Castle, though at least some of it is from a cue mysteriously called Ready to be a Jedi! However, I believe a different cue, 1M6 Ren's Entrance, may have scored a longer version similar to the Carson novelization.

ragoz350 reacted to BrotherSound in The Empire Strikes Back OST - first track as originally planned, without 'This Is Not A Cave'
Well, just when you think you pretty much know what there is to know about a score, sometimes you still stumble across something new. cc @Jay @Falstaft @Ludwig @crumbs @Datameister
So, there was an "album score" of The Empire Strikes Back that appears to have been prepared by 20th Century Fox, I'm guessing as a keepsake for the people who worked on the score. It certainly was never offered for sale, but it does have the proper copyright info. It contains full scores for all the tracks on the album, with one omission: while it does contain 1M2 The Imperial Probe, it's lacking 6M3 This Is Not A Cave, which makes up the last minute or so of the first track. It also includes 1M2 New Start, 1M2 Insert Bar 80, and 1M2 Insert #2 Bar 109, none of which are heard on the album.
I assumed this was just a simple mistake, until I recently looked closer and realized that there's indications of cuts not heard in the album track. The cut at 3:23 is going to sound very strange when you're not used to it, but it's exactly what's indicated. There's also a cut to something indicated at 4:13, but it's ambiguous. And I'm just guessing on that insert being used for the ending, but it seems to work well. So, here's my best attempt to reconstruct what was apparently the originally planned first track of the Empire Strikes Back album, 41 years later!

ragoz350 reacted to mrbellamy in Harry Potter 7CD Collection - MUSIC discussion
All the incidental stuff, I really didn't miss. But I think there would have been places for plenty over the course of the films like family, friendship, Voldy, Hogwarts, Myrtle, Fawkes, Dobby. The point being they didn't need to all be mushed into every movie but scattered throughout the films meaningfully with each score focusing on its own new identity primarily, it could have given a nice strong feeling of cohesive world-building. So that by the time "Leaving Hogwarts" shows up in 8 it's more than just that old cue out of the attic, it's been on the journey. That would have been the ideal for me and why it could get so frustrating every year because I was only ever looking for a few minutes' worth of the old shit. Obviously I understand Doyle, Hooper, Desplat had other negotiations to be concerned with in composing those scores, it was probably plenty enough for them in those months to make sure Hedwig's Theme was well represented along with everything else on their plate, but didn't make it less annoying when all you want is that extra inch.
I also always just thought the "childish" thing was a dumb apology for losing the Williams stuff because yes, melodies are easily transformed and also the "dark" sequels are packed with silly comical magical music and sentimental themes anyway so...
It's not really hard to imagine Williams' friendship theme plopped somewhere into this cue

ragoz350 reacted to carlborg in Images (1972) - 2021 remaster by Quartet Records (CD and LP)
Just finished listening to this score, and know I can understand the hype. I enjoyed it so much that I just feel like I have to write a substantial post about this (which is a first for me)!
In Search of Unicorns: I find the contrasts between the piano/string music and the percussion to be very effective. I wonder how it plays out in the film. The House: This track in particular really made me appreciate the sound quality on this release - thanks MM! Dogs, Ponies and Old Ruins: Damnnnn, that lute! Visitations: I wonder how the grunts and groans from Yamash'ta translate in the film. Found them a bit off-putting, but definitely creepy! Reflections: I love this track! The tremolando/sul pont strings reminds me of the Dementor music from HP3 [The Dementors Converge] The Killing of Marcel: That's some creepy music. Questions again about how the shouts, etc. fit in with the picture. The Love Montage: True to Burlingame's comments, that has to be the weirdest JW love montage music I've ever heard, to the point where it doesn't sound like love scene music anymore. Blood Moon: An entire cue of JW flexing Land of the Ums: Another amazing feast for the ears with all the unique, unearthly sounds. I wonder what JW and Yamash'ta would have come up with if they had access to all the Baschet instruments... The Night Witch Ride: Found the intense breathing to be very effective in adding tension. Also liked the pizzicato passages - for what I assume to be a running sequence? These passages are SO similar to the transition before "Chasing Scabbers" in the Witches, Wands and Wizards arrangement! The Waterfall and The Final Chapter: That theme is so haunting, and I absolutely adore the high string writing around around the them [I wonder what the two string notes at 2:27 correspond to in the film]
In the liner notes Williams lists Edgar Varese as one of the main influences for this score - I also hear a lot of Penderecki. Speaking of liner notes: my love of liner notes increased a hundredfold during this listening session. Might be due to the fact that I haven't watched the film, but I think Jon Burlingame did a wonderful job. I wonder if the film is worth watching, even if only to identify where some changes in cues occur in tracks, etc.
So, to sum up, thank you all for hyping me up for this release - it was definitely worth!
