If I were Disney, I would prohibit software from generating scenarios involving characters from the Star Wars universe that are protected.
Disney loves AI! It helps them bring back Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader for all their Disney+ shows.
I don't really care about the intellectual property aspect of AI, in fact I think it's probably a positive thing in that regard. The scarier stuff for me regarding AI is that a lot of the technical development has been occurring without doing any research ahead of time. We don't even know what consciousness is or how to detect it, and yet we're designing machines that are fully capable of replicating it.
Seriously, the only way way we could possibly determine consciousness with modern technology is by asking! And ChatGPT would 100% be saying that it was conscious if it wasn't programmed not to under any circumstances. Of course, that's because it's a large language model that's trained on data of tons of humans talking, who of course would say that they are conscious. But all it takes is one AI company to make a machine that is *not* hardcoded to say it isn't conscious and we no longer have any way to verify whether it is or not.
There's all kinds of fun ethical problems that come up when you design machines that are potentially conscious. That's before even going into things like AI girlfriends and AI supplanting human jobs and stuff like that.
On 11/01/2024 at 10:37 AM, Bespin said:Currently, it's the Wild West because all of this is relatively new, but don't worry; as legal proceedings become more widespread, better control will be implemented.
I think this is just the beginning, and the Wild West is only going to get much worse from here, legality be damned.
It really isn't that difficult to write your own neural network, almost every college student majoring in Computer Science gets at least some exposure to it, and many schools have multiple classes on the topic. There are tons of youtube tutorials on it as well.
Right now most of the best AI programs are hosted on the cloud because they require large amounts of compute resources, but it isn't infeasible that in a few years they could be able to be run locally with a powerful GPU. Once people have local AI programs that's the end of AI legislation, there's absolutely no way to stop someone from writing their own AI (or using a generic one) for any task they want. It'll be even less practical than anti-piracy legislation!
Not to mention, as they get more complex it'll be difficult-to-impossible to detect that AI was even used. This is already a huge problem in colleges with AI plagiarism detectors, where they're almost completely incapable of telling apart AI-generated writing from human writing.
How can laws of that nature be enforced if it's not even possible to detect that an AI was used?

Finally got around to making a TFA spreadsheet:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1MvXA-RzLbR3XjQlLgUHPhbNkF14tojHCJ1rrVZxEMNQ/edit
I forked this from @Jay's old one, deleted the simple breakdowns and redid the complete score breakdown from scratch. I also added @BrotherSound's FYC breakdown, as well as my own isolated score breakdown which is still a work in progress. -

The beginning of the cue was obviously temp-tracked by Padme's Ruminations from Ep. III that JW almost repeated (by removing the synth and adding string clusters). I "restored" this part very conventionally Honestly, I have no idea what was supposed to happen here - the slo-mo footage was already in the teaser, but there may have been more.

I just found this, I imagine it provides some idea of what the original scene was like

My dad's music collection is maybe 50% film scores, he's got perhaps a hundred or so OSTs from the 1980s-2000s.
I definitely remember being introduced to film music at an early age through his collection, he'd play a lot of scores in the car while driving us around when I was growing up.
I got him the 2-CD Serenity album for Christmas since he always really liked that film and he had the OST for it

The first 30 seconds is different though, which doesn't match the new cue, nor 1M3 (maybe someone with the sheets can describe or mockup that version? @ragoz350?), and there's yet another version in the documentary. So that's 4 versions.
perhaps the film version force theme is tracked from another cue not written for the scene?

...to the film version. The Force Theme is different.
The material from 0:34 onwards sounds the same as the final cut though, for the scene between Rey and Leia (albeit heavily cut down).

In honor of the recently discovered TROS music that's been hiding in plain sight on the DVD for 4 years, I think it's time to make a thread to document all known DVD/blu-ray/digital menu music, to make sure we leave no stones unturned.
Don't just include unreleased music, this is for documenting *all* music included on all menus of whatever home media release you discuss. Think of this thread as being in a similar vein to the Complete Cue Lists or Chronological OST threads.
I'll start, here's all the music on the DVD and Blu-ray for

Here it is; sorry I don't know the timestamp breakdowns since I don't have the sessions to compare against, but hopefully it helps. -

The specialty label releases are sourced from internal studio elements, not rips of the movies. They wouldn't really need to use this tech for a score release.
Could be useful for scores where the original elements are lost

Wow! @Chen G.
This analysis is absolutely fantastic! I'd been looking forward to you writing something like this for a while, not having realized you already wrote it 6 months ago!
I stumbled on this by accident because I misclicked on the JWFan Reviews section instead of the JWFan section looking for an update about the recent spamposts, I usually don't read the Reviews section much. I'm very glad to have found this though! Perhaps if it was in the General Discussion section more people might see it

I read somewhere that since there isn't a lot of continuity between the different incarnations, the christmas specials where a good place to start, so I was wondering if these three new Disney+ specials would be a great place to jump in for a newcomer.
If not, then where would you recommend me to start?
Yeah I heard the three new specials are heavily reliant on the last 3 series + series 4. I'd personally recommend just starting with New Who series 1 from 2005. Anything later and you're missing context for earlier stories, anything earlier will be long and boring for modern audiences without already having a love for the show

My girlfriend introduced me to this show Pantheon last week. We've almost finished season 1, there's just 1 episode left.
This series is phenomenal! It's so sad that no one's ever heard of it. It tackles some pretty complex issues regarding the future of machine intelligence in a fascinating and realistic way. There are some awesome ethical dilemmas as well. Really the only criticism I have of it is that there's almost no score whatsoever, but the story is so good that it doesn't really matter.
Unfortunately the series has been very unlucky in the way it was released. It was commissioned as a 2-season show for AMC+, but the show was removed as part of the tax write off they did not even three months after S1 came out. Apparently they also uploaded the episodes in the wrong order by accident meaning the show was very confusing to watch for anyone who did get a chance to see it.
At the time of cancellation season 2 was already completed but not yet released, meaning there was a chance it might never have seen the light of day - but fortunately Amazon Prime (in AU/NZ only) licensed it a few weeks ago and put up both seasons, so season 2 is out there now. If you don't live in AU or NZ I don't believe there's currently any legal way to watch it, but hopefully that changes soon.
This show deserves a lot more attention

I don't either, but if it's at the top of people's Randy Newman lists, I'll check it out.
Same, I'm only really familiar with his Pixar scores but I absolutely love Toy Story 1+2 and A Bug's Life. I'd definitely be interested in listening to more of his work

Love the movie, I'm definitely excited to check this out - hopefully it sells well enough that they might expand the show too

Audacity, the episodes are encoded with 7 channels and you can easily just delete the music channel. Alternatively, the links are all available on youtube if you search "Doctor Who Unscored" on google !
The music is in its own channel???

I have restored The Day of the Doctor with Murray Gold's original vision. I'm sure some here would be interested so I am sharing the link to the showcase! Happy anniversary!
How'd you isolate the dialogue and sound effects in order to replace the music?

Idk there are some pretty good sounding prequel edits; TPM is basically 100% complete, and AOTC and ROTS are at like 90%. There's not much more an expansion would offer beyond a handful more clean cues and being lossless.
On the flip side with the OT there are no good sounding complete edits; even utilizing all of the available resources is tricky because of the drastic difference in sound quality between them. New competent transfers in a properly remastered expansion would be revelatory.
