In some cases you may never know if you've currently got the best possible elements that exist.

And fans demand releases now (I've done my fair share of 'where is xxxx?), not in 5 years when you've managed to unearth better elements. You can't have it both ways.

The 2016 box set was only in print for 18 months before it sold out in June of 2018.

    The options are

    1) Leave it out of print forever, never reissue the scores in any format

    2) Reissue the box as-is

    3) Reissue the scores separately, in identical presentations as were made in 2016

    4) Reissue the scores separately, and take the time to re-examine what's available and see if anything more could be added

How is #4 the worst option for you?

Would you rather the film versions of Journey To The Island the Dennis Steals The Embryo sit in a vault unreleased forever instead?

Was it a money grab to revisit Fiddler On The Roof, Star Wars, Close Encounters, The Fury, Superman, Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, ET, Return of the Jedi, Home Alone, and Home Alone 2 after they had each been expanded once?

Nobody is forcing anybody to rebuy anything.

A popular title sold out, and is now back in print for anyone who missed out to get a chance to own.

They could have released the same identical discs as before, but instead Mike and I spent a bunch of time together to make this as comprehensive as possible.  Would you have preferred these film versions sat unreleased forever instead?

I will just say we collaborated to ensure the release could be as complete and comprehensive as possible and leave it at that.

I also realized that if the "Appearance in Episodes" column is all accurate, then you've also figured out the chronological order of the OST album

(Ross) 31 End Credits Episode 1
(Holt) 02 Order 66 (Holt) 03 Inquisitor’s Hunt (Holt) 04 Young Leia (Holt) 05 Days of Alderaan (Holt) 07 Bail and Leia (Holt) 08 Nari’s Shadow (Ross) 06 The Journey Begins Episode 2

Currently I'm still a little unsure about the "Agony" theme, so if anyone feels like checking this out, please do!

Anyone else think the Mando main theme might be the most iconic TV theme of the decade? I think it is definitely instantly recognisable and memorable and therefore 'timeless'. A perfect example star wars music does not need to fit within the the John Williams mould to be successful

My main gripe with the Holt material is just that it isn't very good, in general, not that it isn't good star wars music

Also I don't really see a problem with today's new composers trying to be inventive and unique (see success of Mando theme). Imagine if film music never evolved past its humble beginnings. We would be listening to the same kind of scores as people did 100 years ago! Composers like Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, Gorranson, Clint Mansell, Vangelis even Zimmer and artists like Daft Punk have been pushing the envelope, successfully. If they are not successful I don't know what is

But with anything, there is a time and a place for new things, and the Kenobi show was not one of them

I find really sad to see so much people complaining about those reissues. I get it that people are still expecting unreleased or never expanded scores but to see our to speciality labels predicting those bashing on such releases (quoting LLL "In the mean time, commence with the complaints in 3,2,..." and Intrada jocking about "Another expansion? Why couldn't they release something entirely new that if it was easy to release would have been released already?") really show how much spoiled we are.
We should be grateful to them to always do their best to bring light to our beloved scores, they are not big corporation trying to get richier each month on our backs with poorly made products. There is love and passion in their works and clearly no wish to disrespect their fans

Also worth mentioning that MV lamented how thin the profit margins were on the JP/TLW box set (I believe "enough to make me cry" were his words). It was so costly they barely broke even, once all was said and done.

By splitting the scores into individual releases (presumably TLW 2CD is imminent), they can finally make a return on their initial investment, six years and a business-destroying pandemic later.

And at the end of the day, that's exactly what we want for the labels! How else do people expect them to fund new expansions if they're not making profits? Especially JW/SS projects, which aren't cheap.

That luxurious 3CD Hook expansion everyone keeps fantasizing about isn't paying for itself.

You know it’s a spoiled group when so many have gone from pining for a title for decades to “THIS SHIT AGAIN??”

What should the labels do, never release a title until the ultimate mega definite best no chance it can be better first gen elements are available?

regulars on a JW forum, complaining when a JW release is either 1) improved when available or 2) reissued for others to enjoy that missed out the first time. Wild.

Also, I'm guessing this is pretty common knowledge already but your list doesn't say it, recording started on March 5th, 1977 according to the 1997 SE liner notes

This would probably never happen but I'd love to see a complete release of Murray Gold's score for his seasons on Doctor Who (2005-2017). There's some absolutely fantastic music he wrote for that series that hasn't seen the light of day. There are some pretty excellent fan rips from some of the blu-rays that are available that while they are largely clean, many cues are still riddled with sfx and it would nice to hear the score as it was actually recorded.

Also I'd love to see some official expansions for some of the Star Wars animated shows, particularly the Clone Wars. I think there's a lot of great music for that too that hasn't been released. Even the latest season that got official albums for every arc still has tons of great music unreleased.

Interestingly, even though the audio is largely the same, lots of the accompanying shots are different (especially in the first half), making me think that one of the two sources is edited, if not both of them. There's definitely footage edited out of this clip because there's an obvious jump cut at 0:18

The article mentions that at first they didn’t think they would be allowed to use any of the old themes. Then that Williams gave permission for them to use the themes in the last episode. Why would they not be allowed to use Star Wars music in Star Wars? Do they ask Williams for permission just as a courtesy?

Also, how dumb are they to use some of the most epic music from the prequels in the trailer to only go in the other direction.

"Indy is a legacy character that Natalie hadn’t written a theme for because she was only 1 years old when Raiders came out. So she spoke to [Lucasfilm president] Kathleen Kennedy and said, “I just want to write Indy a theme.” So who can deny her that? And she did, she wrote the Indy theme, and it just embodies the spirit of the film entirely."

I was rewatching this excellent 1980 BBC documentary on the music of the Empire Strikes Back:

It contains considerable footage from both the recording sessions and the spotting sessions of Empire. I was curious if anyone here knows anything about where this footage came from. Did the BBC just film bits of it specifically for the documentary? Or did they film large chunks of it for editing down later and for Lucasfilm to use for general purpose marketing use? I wonder how much of both the recording sessions and the spotting sessions were actually recorded and if any more of this footage survives beyond what's just in the documentary.

Also, if the BBC filmed it, is it possible that the raw sessions footage exists in their archives somewhere? I'm not a Brit but I believe the archives should be openly available to British citizens right?

edit: before submitting this I looked up the person credited for photography, Kenneth MacMillan: https://www.cinematographers.nl/PaginasDoPh/macmillan.htm
Looks like he definitely did work for the BBC

The answer to that question is that they ARE comparably cheap.  They’re incredibly expensive for TV productions, but reportedly $100-150 million per 5-7 hour seasons.  Comparatively, the TROS budget was $275 million for a 2 hour movie.
