  1. HAHA, really funny. That pretty much sums it up. The current state of film music. As you say, "Too much money to spend on gear, and not enough skill or talent to write good music. ", There's so much great unrecorded music out there that I find it a real waste to hire some of the best musicians in the world (real A-class orchestras) to play what you've described above.
  2. And David Arnold. Wrong quote, I didn't say that Speaking of, Hisaishi is also an ex-rocker who later became a damn good composer.
  3. No, in the case of 2 of them, 1. they are not on this earth any more 2. You might not like their music but it's pretty much in the books that Mozart and Goldsmith were very good at what they did. As for my list, yes, Santaolalla is up there. He ain't a composer by any stretch in my books. Brian Tyler (aka Guy Smiley) should retire and become a model for GQ for something. He's a hack. Same with Tyler Bates. Don't think much of Jablonsky either, and Trevor Rabin should go back to YES. I really despise rockers who turn to film composing in their twilight years...except for Elfman. He's the exception. I second all David said and add 3 more note-assemblers (not composers) to the list: John Ottman, Javier Navarrete and Alejandro Amenábar (the latter retired from music, and the rest should just follow his steps). Every second of recorded music is a waste of talent of all musicians involved in the recording process.
  4. Oh, bloody hell. A message This video is not available in your country due to copyright restrictions. is all I get. This is the first time ever that I got such message on YouTube, and I must've seen thousands of videos on it. Same here
  5. I don't think it's made up by the journalist. From what I know, Francis has been claiming the same in his concerts and interviews for over a decade now. In the YouTube video from the original post above you can hear the same story in the words of the host.
  6. Score of the Year: On Willows and Birches Album of the Year: American Spectrum (including Escapades for sax and orchestra) Album of the Year (re-release): Revolution (John Corigliano) Composer of the Year: John Williams Label of the Year: Naxos Cue of the Year: Boulevard Night (from City Noir - John Adams)
  7. We also got Escapades (best album of the year in my opinion)... On the other hand, Memoirs of a Geisha suite for cello and orchestra was released as part of the (expensive and not worth) Yo-Yo Ma anthology. It also includes Air and Simple Gifts, which was released on iTunes earlier this year.
  8. Escapades Doctor Atomic Symphony/Guide to Strange Places Tetro Missa Latina None but the Brave
  9. Yeah, he was in for the money (better paid than commissions for the concert hall), but while he's at it, he tries to show the best of his craftsmanship. Corigliano has always stated that he only works in the movie business when he feels he has something to say, because there are already a lot of great composers working there already (I would like to know his view on the current state of movie music though).
  10. for the umpteenth time, untouchables, Go away.
  11. Slatkin says "all the concertos", so probably it means just that. But I hope he'll throw in some other goodies, like Soundings or for Seiji! or the newly-arranged Air and Simple Gifts. But first and foremost, please, 7 for Luck. I see it rather unlikely, like you say, Maurizio.

  13. Oh, Online. That's ok. It's not part of the November releases of Naxos, I bet they'll release the CD later on. From what I understand, they're doing it for Naxos! Which doesn't come as surprise to me, because Slatkin has stated several times that Williams will be one of the composers of our time to be performed over the centuries ahead. This is the best news of the year! This means they'll be doing, eventually, the clarinet concerto, the viola concerto and the harp concerto too (the other unrecorded concertos)!
  14. Oh, right! I thought the link was for the Pittsburgh concert only. It's probably a live recording of the concerto from 2007, when they played it within the season of the DSO. I wonder what will accompany the CD. No release date from what I see, by the way. It can be in December, it can be next year, or whenever.
  15. Wow, great news! Where did you get this info? I checked out some time ago the recording schedule of Naxos for late 2009 and there was no mention of the DSO nor Slatkin. Should this mean they're starting in Naxos a series of recordings of Williams' concert works, the same way they've done with Corigliano and they're doing now with Daugherty? I HOPE SO! Slatkin is indeed the right man for this task. He's conducting the Violin Concerto this season with his orchestra.
  16. You over-hyped me and considering how much I loved Yared's previous work "Eternity", I wasn't so impressed
  17. The Goldsmith documentary is one of those rare occasions when we get to see the actual recording process of a single theme. Goldsmith could spend hours and hours in the most meaningless action cue, and if you watch closely, you'll see the final result has nothing to do with they played at the beginning! I also like his conducting style, a more experienced one than in the Filmharmonic '70 concert (I think that clip is at jerrygoldsmithonline.com).
  18. I do like Greenwood's concert works, but this movie just didn't do it for me. I should watch it again though, because I realize I remember nothing about it.
  19. American Battle sounds a little... Bachian. Which is good, because it sounds different from what one would expect from an ordinary American Battle. Is it a coincidence or you paid homage to Fitzwilly? Good job, Composer1978!
  20. Listen to Jennifer Higdon, one of America's top composers. Her voice is more akin to Williams' than any other I've heard of.
  21. You're obviously not thinking outside the box. I'm afraid it will be an all Yo-Yo Ma CD, should it happen.
  22. Not good news. I was hoping that the suite would be released stand-alone with another big Williams work (horn concerto, maybe? as it was premiered by the CSO too...) Every chance has been reduced to zero now...
  23. Hey, it was great to meet you, Manuel! We had a lot of fun in the weekend. Chris, I have no idea who may be coming next year. But there are a few interesting composers who have shown their interest in the festival (I can't give names, unfortunately).
