I've finally acquired the set as files. As alluded to earlier, it doesn't hold much interest to me (I even think the old Epic CD is a tad too long, even if HOOK is in my list of top 10 JW scores), BUT...it has allowed me the opportunity to create a separate "Hook - The Musical" album of sorts. 29 minutes, neat and succinct, including the songs (that weren't on the OST) as well as a couple of source cues.

I would include the songs from the main program, if I were fiddling with disc 3: We don't want to grow up, Pick them up and When you're alone. And if I would attempt a "Songs and other non-orchestral Material" album, what your inclusion of Concertina Medley suggests, I would also include Banning back home here. Saying that, perhaps I will do that now; could be a neat idea.

  2. Yes, with it me it was similar; I was giddy with joy when I discovered this box. It was expensive for a student like me, but for this I treated myself. It was during some free weeks between my diploma and the beginning of my doctorate, so I had plenty of time to listen to it. I also discovered some of the flaws like the suddenly reversed channels in the Boba Fett sequence in Empire, but did not mind much.

Throw the Harry Potter expansions on there as ones that leave me wanting for the original.

I agree that there is too much dynamic compression going on, at least in HP 1. The recordings session sound much better. But I mostly listen to soundtracks on the bike or in the car, so there dynamic compression is a good thing. Not at home for critical listening, though.

  4. I am only digitizing those soundtracks, I want to listen to while not at home. So when I want to listen to say Home alone during commuting and it is not already in the Music app, I digitize the CD in order to be able to transfer it to my Apple Watch (my music player of choice while on the road, no matter if bike, car or train) At home it is not more complicated to insert a disc than to start a music app. But of course, my digital collection is always growing since I am adding soundtracks from time to time in the way I described.

Who else on JWFan has all 3 of the original OST albums on the CD format already?

I'd share a pic of mine if I was at home

I had them all, once. Temple of Doom as a German pressing was a present from my first girlfriend, must have been in 1988 or 89. Last Crusade I bought as my first soundtrack purchase on the newfangled CD format in 1989. Raiders I had as a cassette copy from the LP and bought on CD when it was released, sometime in the 90s. And then I bought the DCC when it came out. And when the Concord set was announced I sold them all on amazon, mostly for a really good price. I only then realized that my TOD CD must be quite the collectors item. Funnily enough a few years later I regretted selling the DCC, looked for used copies and bought one on amazon for small fraction of the price I was paid a few years ago. So no regrets in financial regard :-)

  6. I don´t know if this is the right thread, but I just want to mention, that I compared the iTunes Version and the FYC hires version and they sound distinctly different. For my ears, the FYC is cleaner, while the iTunes sounds as if some additional processing like reverb etc has been added. Both sound good, but I prefer the FYC, since it gives me more the feeling to be in the studio. I am curious if somebody has compared the CD sound quality to those other versions?

What are all the non-Indy quotes in the score? So far I caught just three: Spyders (Minority Report) and The Intersection Scene(War of the Worlds) during the NY chase scene (before Pulse of the City) and The Conveyor Belt (Attack of the Clones) during the second part of the tuk tuk chase that JW unfortunately left off the OST.

The Battle of Syracuse reminds me very much of some action music from The Lost World, but I don't know if this is a quote. In general I am surprise of this many similarities to older, unrelated soundtracks. It would be interesting to know if they were a deliberate choice of Williams to incorporate them into his probably last score as a kind of summary of his life work or if it is just unconscious bubbling up of those ideas during the composing. Or even a sign of failing creativity although this would seem strange since he composed one of his best concert works just before this score.

I'm sure it's not just a decision on Naxos part, but also what Slatkin wanted most to record (or record again). The first concerto was the Horn, back then without a commercial release available, and was recorded prior to Slatkin becoming the DSO music director. It was part of a recorded for broadcast concert with him as guest conductor, during the period the orchestra was still deciding on his next director. That one become the first release on what was supposed to be a full cycle of Williams Concerti with the DSO under Slatkin during his tenure, which has since come to an end.

Yes, they started with promise by recording the horn concerto which did not have a catalogue recording. But then only the already know concerti. I still hope that they may finish the cycle one day.

  9.  I will never understand why Naxos recorded all the concerti that were already available in other recordings first, before they perhaps, maybe start with the two concerti without any official recording, the viola and the clarinet.

No Raiders March anywhere in the program?

Not in full fanfare mode, but it occurs several times during the program which is enough for me. If I want Raiders March overkill, I have 4 other soundtracks to chose from. This soundtrack is musically centered around Helena's Theme IMO. And the March at the end is especially jarring, so I got rid of it.

  11. After living a while with the soundtrack album and listening in different track orders I finally ended with the following rearrangement:

    1. Helena Theme with ASM as a prelude (the inconclusive sounding ending supporting this)

    2. then the OST order starting with Germany 1944 until Centuries join hands

    3. Shortened version of New York 1969 which cuts off before the Raiders march

    4. Prologue

    5. Helenas Theme.

This I find a musically very satisfying order.
