Seriously? The tempo is a mess, the percussion has no clue what they're doing. It's so bad it actually makes me worried for the care, involvement and even state of mind of the man who recorded take after take and put 100+ performance edits into the album release of the 5 minute Hedwig's Theme, and here he didn't bother conducting properly, doing another take, even just an insert to patch it up, what the hell happened?

Agreed. The Trumpets are quite thin, the trombones are leaving a lot more to be desired. Also really heavy compression on the far/room mics, i think they are trying to make up for a lacking performance. Doesn't even come close to the LSO performances.

The LLL set is defintiive and contains everything recorded for both films.

@CuriousMan is just on some crusade because some cues overlap each other instead of being separated and he doesn't like the mastering choice as much as the OST album's mastering

Oh interesting! Thank you for the clarification.

I remember someone on here almost 15 years ago now saying something like Expanded/Complete releases never sound as good as the OST's. However I remember the Lord of the Rings Complete Recordings Releases where the first time i'd thought "Wow this sounds superior to the OST's".

The Phantom Menace Ultimate Edition being the prime example.

Yeah, but it’s nothing you haven’t already heard: 1M9 Imperial March is the ‘Aboard the Executor’ cue from ESB, including the tracked imperial march statement. I think JKMS took this more or less straight from the LTP version. Imperial Theme - Edwardian Style (no slate) is the music heard in the commercial.

So do we know if this was recorded?

We need whole piece re-recorded like that. Or compilation featuring all concert pieces (at least from OT) can be really great.

    YES!!!!

I was hoping there was something like the Musical Journey that came with the Revenge of the Sith soundtrack, but with all the major themes across the 9 films.

    Ah the dreams!

But you can't disagree that this version of theme is just effing smashing. When I've first heard it, it just blew me away.

I cried (seriously) when I heard it, felt so fresh and was fantastic to hear a modern studio recording with Williams conducting. It completely caught me off guard, wasn't expecting it at all.

    :P

Don Williams is really smashing those timps in this version of The Imperial March, I think you lose quiet a bit of the harmonic context coming from the strings on the ostinato when the percussion is too loud in the various recordings of the piece (including the TROS one).

How do you guys even notice this stuff?  Different take?  Really?

The tempo is different. The strings are more marcato than staccato. The Brass takes more time on the short 16th note Bb's, in fact the second one is that prominent it makes the piece all that more scary. The Brass overall gives a much stronger and rounded performance overall. #ineedalife

  8. I know how sad this sounds (and many others here I imagine feel the same), when a new project/release gets announced whether officially or a new amazon listing I get so excited like a child only to be disappointed every single time. I feel like it's never going to happen but I hold on to hope coming back to the disappointment every time. I understand that it's a business and it has to make a return, but come on, a limited release of expanded/complete Star Wars scores. You could put any price on them and they'd sell out, be on ebay with ridiculous resale price quicker than you can say Jawa!

It's been so many years of getting excited in the threads on this forum. I know I sound like a fan who is saying, "I/we deserve this etc." But I think it's beyond all that. I believe it needs to be done for the art of those scores that Williams has written and recorded, Disney owe it to the music!

I hope I am not alone feeling like this, I can't imagine I am.

  9. Reading all the information from Shawn Murphy during the Sony Release 2015 video gives me hope due to how many sources of 4, 5 and 6 there possibly are in the Lucasfilm/Fox archives.

That video from the Star Wars show makes me angry, talking about how good the releases are, then you put on The Asteroid Field and hear the most god awful level of reverb which sounds like preset no1 in a basic reverb unit. Just embarrassing!

Then you put The Imperial March on and it's a different story, aspects of if sound fantastic, in some ways the best it ever has.

The point is, a future expansion should include a track called "The Imperial March (Alternate)" that presents the concert arrangement again, but using the takes chosen for that scene in the film for those parts (and any other interesting different takes for the rest).  If you don't care about that, then simply skip past that track when listening to this potential definitive release.

This would make me happier than anything if this happened. I am not being even remotely sarcastic and I am deadly serious!

Um no it's not just his headphones. I've had good headphones over the years and the Special Edition for ROTJ does have crap sound.

I took the SE one and 'remastered' it. Here it is and hopefully sounds good to people. Yes this is the Special Edition version as that's all I have.

Thank you for sharing this Trent!

It does sound way better yes, congratulations. But it in someways exemplifies the problems that were there before, which cannot be removed using post production on a mastered stereo track. There is no denying yours is better though. Ridiculous that fans can make something better using post production effects. I was listening to the Harry Potter John Williams Collection this morning, dreaming that we were going to get an equivalent Star Wars set...
