They clearly didn't, as evidenced by the 1997 sets, 2005 ROTS bonus DVD, and various video games all of which use material from the original session recordings

Can't imagine Star Wars: Force Awakens winning, but I definitely think it should. I can imagine the film getting snubbed due to its financial success.

It so perfectly flows right into Yoda's Theme.... Williams is a freaking genius

Prequels sound the same to me

The OT remasters are stunning.  Jedi sounds like it was recorded yesterday.  Empire sounds better than the 1997 SEs.

Of course they are the LP programs, complete with the same old awful analog edits.  But still, the sound quality of the album masters is great here, Sony didn't screw that up one bit.

That ^ which explain why some of the tracks on the special edition are so deteriorated. That and poor recording equipment.
I have actually never owned any Star Wars CDs before, so if they are no different, well I guess that saves me the trouble of wanting to collect the various versions.

As I was hoping, they're more coherent to the original sessions than anything we've seen before. At least from what I can hear. They're mastered for dynamic range and NOT loudness like all of the other scores are. They sound very organic, almost as if no mastering was done at all. I am pleased, but still eager to obtain a 192kHz copy from somewhere.

I will be checking out the mastering of the CDs when I get them on Monday. I hear they are no different from any previous releases but we will see.

Is it possible the prequels were naively recorded at 44.1khz?  That wouldn't be unprecedented for the era.

The OT are of course fresh 192khz/24bit transfers of the old album masters.

Shows when I last bought from them!

    Original post updated.

Depends. If you have or want the CD, I'd just go with that. Otherwise, I understand the best files out there to be the 16/44.1 FLAC files on any of the high res sites as they have slightly better range than the CD.

Assuming there are no artifacts/defects on the high res versions like there were on The Force Awakens, then 7digital, HDTracks and PonoMusic all have the highest quality versions you can get (24-bit, 192 kHz). Of those three retailers, 7digital currently has the cheapest price.

I don't know if anyone has pointed this out yet but you can hear the ending of The Imperial March (Concert Arrangement) when Kylo Ren walks down the ramp at the beginning of the Force Awakens.

One of my favourites is when Vader picks up the Emperor and throws him. The way that scene builds as Vader is battling his own mind, until he just can't watch his son suffer any more. Plus I love the meaning in the fact that Vader is given the Force Theme again, after he lost it when he turned. But in that moment the force returned to him triumphantly, and then of course he gets it again in another great moment in 'Funeral Pyre for a Jedi.'

God, there are so many great renditions of this theme. It seems like Williams is never tired of it. The OT renditions could easily close the list. And they probably do. But let's not forget about the uber-cool renditions from ROTS - the very opening, Anakin/Obi-Wan Force push moment, Goodbye Old Friend. And the Starkiller destruction from TFA is awesome too. Not to mention the interweaving of the theme with Rey's theme towards the end of end credits.

That version really is so beautiful but it's also the build up before it and the sense of hopelessness it evokes that helps to finally give such an impact emotionally, at least for me anyway. I think Williams is a foreplay maestro!
When the Force Theme starts and we 'feel' those soft timp hits, I never know if it's my heart beating or the music but it never fails to put a lump in my throat.

I went back and forth on that, particularly as the Throne Room Fanfare is referenced at the end of ROTJ's credits. However I felt The Forest Battle is strong enough as a rousing closer and fits the chronological journey which builds to Episode 7.
Ref Han Solo & the Princess, as Jim said it's not approved for performance. Trust me, there were loads of cues I would have liked to include. Battle in the Snow / The Final Battle / Anakin's Dark Deeds / Sail Barge Assault / The Little People Work etc. etc.
