The original soundtrack release of Pleasantville is one of the 5 Randy Newman CDs that I have.

    The Natural
    Avalon
    Ragtime
    Awakenings
    Pleasantville

For the record, I'm not talking about how George Lucas talks about the Jedi, I'm talking about how its clear George Lucas feels about the Jedi from what he put on film.

And its clear to me that George Lucas - the George Lucas that's actually there behind the camera - does not think that the Jedi are flawed, hubristic, or wrong in their general view of the world. He thinks they are right: they forbid attachment, and its precisely attachment that leads to Anakin's downfall. They forbid possessiveness (nevermind how twisted it is that to seek to stop the person you love from dying is at all possessive) and its Anakin's "possessiveness" that leads to his downfall.

I feel like Luke finding success in going against the wishes of Obi Wan in Return of the Jedi, or even Qui-Gon defying the council in Episode I hardly diminish this. This has almost entirely to do with Episodes II-III and for that purpose they should be seen in isolation.

I ADORE his score for The Motion Picture, and I'm as far from a trekkie as it gets. But the experience of listening to the score back a decade ago, right when I was starting to get serious about film scores, is one of my favorite film music experiences of all time.

I got around to watching Meet Joe Black - certainly not a good film, despite Anthony Hopkins' best efforts, but what a score. I'm not sure how much unreleased music there is (the pizzicato strings piece from ~0:41:53 stood out), but bring on a remaster/expansion. It's also a shame the Anything Goes arrangement didn't appear on the original soundtrack release.

Is there a list of expanded/recent Thomas Newman soundtracks? I can think of:
    1985 - The Man with One Red Shoe (La-La Land Records, 2018) 1987 - Less Than Zero (La-La Land Records, 2016) 1992 - Whispers in the Dark (Intrada, 2012) 1993 - Flesh and Bone (La-La Land Records, 2022) 1995 - The Shawshank Redemption (La-La Land Records, 2016)

It's certainly a cold score. Even the "warm" cues feel somewhat artificial in their warmth, exactly like the film it accompanies.

Simply put, the score is a masterpiece.

For all my criticism of some Intrada CDs, I have come to understand what a leading figure in soundtrack releases Douglass Fake was and it has been enlightening to learn about his passion for film music. Some of my most beloved Intrada releases include Apollo 13, Legends of the Fall, The Rocketeer, Jaws, The Ghost and the Darkness, and Star Trek III, IV and V. I have spent countless hours listening to these and more, and the joy I have experienced from this music would not have been possible without Doug. Thank you, and rest in peace.

The complete 94-track album is out in New Zealand and it is 3 hours and 48 minutes long!

Sadly, it contains two (!) versions of the horrid pop song.

    Wouldn't that be great?
My personal feeling is that if I were trying to define what a true "golden age" for Williams was, it would have to include a big peak on both ends.  For me, that's 1975 (Jaws) through 1993 (Schindler's List).  Almost everything between those two peaks is a genuine masterpiece, even for crapola like Heartbeeps.

But if I was being a bit less restrictive, I'd expand those years to 1968 (Heidi) through ... uh, through, what, like, 2011?  2012?  2023?

And if I were being a bit less restrictive than that, I'd just refrain from ever putting dates on it at all, because there's very, very little the guy has ever done that isn't worth my time to listen to frequently.  The man's work IS a golden age.

Yup, this show is really doubling down on the "the Jedi were bad, actually" that's been happening in Star Wars for a while now. I don't like it because it betrays everything Ben said about them in the original movie.

Good see him getting a nomination, it’s a lovely piece of music. He might even win!

The new Newman drought continues from Elemental. Black Bag seems to have been removed from his IMDB and there is zero buzz around In The Blink of an Eye.

Objectively, 1975 to 1984 with Temple of Doom.

Personally? The Lost World in 1997 to Munich/Geisha in 2005.

But the only right answer is 1932 to 2024

I have to agree, there are just far too many classics from that era.

In broader terms I'd go for 1975-2005 though
